I know a LOT of people here REALLY dig the GD. But personally, GD is just not for me, but I see the front page of the archive page over run with posts about them. So I wanted to do my part and make a few suggestions of really tight shows by bands that aren't the greatful dead. I mean, there's 26500+ live concerts by almost 1200 diffrent artists here! I rarely see posts about other bands anymore... i'd like to see that happen, so check this stuff out! there's so much good stuff here, expand the horizons a little! Just my personal suggestion ... dig these bands! (the link will take you to my favorite show from that band. the band name is the text that is linked below. dig the music!)

-Tyler

Ben Lee (a great show by an australian singer / songwriter. popy but not too much so. very charming voice and great melodies)..

Afroskull .. (a great horn section. they just smoke! .. listen to that band man, they are tight. really nice band)

Bushwalla (top notch dumpster funk. a DJ, sax, bass, guitar, percussion, and witty songs. Jason Mraz makes a suprise appearance to try and play sax in this show).

Butthole surfers (classic 1990's dirty rock. Solid)

Death Cab For Cutie (you've probably heard of them. they're really mainstream alternative)

Das Rut .. (improvisational funk band from seattle)

Gregory Page (San Diego singer / songwriter who is the old legend around town. people call him 'the godfather')

Ghost Mice (folk/punk. really intresting unamplified sound)

fIREHOSE (perfect punk rock)

Jane (beautiful singer / songwriter solo piano player with a great voice)

Honey White (indie surf-rock from Santa Barbara, CA)

Jason Mraz (talented young new singer songwriter)

Jefferson Starship (legends from the past)

Los Lonely Boys (great mexicali rock / blues)

La Querencia (experimental improv with unique toys and melodies. think 'postal service')

Matisyahu (hassedic jew who raps and sings regaee. seriously. you gotta hear it)

Raul Midon (a blind R&B / soul singer from NYC. Amazing sound and range. one man band but it sounds like 3 people up there)

Speechwriters LLC (acoustic duo from claremont, ca. rockstastic.)

Scarlet Symphony (great glam / thrash punk rock from san diego, ca)

Tenacious D (a great comedy duo from LA. Jack Black is in a lot of movies as well. he's in the band as one half of the duo)

The White Buffalo (Gruff guitar solo style. really fun stuff.)

Tristan Prettyman hot singer / songwriter who's cute and has a great voice)

Warren Zevon (Ahooooooo, the wearwolf of london)

Xavier Rudd (great solo act from Australia. he plays lap steel guitar, electric guitar, 3 digeridoos, drums with his feet and all sorts of other stuff.. all by himself! amazing sound)

Zwan (billy corgan's 2nd band. after smashing pumpkins)

Hope you dig at least one new band from this post!

Hmm, some excellent recommendations there--some I heartily second, and some I'm definitely going to have to check out. Thanks, Tyler! And allow me to throw out a few suggestions of my own. (Note: some of these are just links to the band's page, because I haven't yet listened to enough to have a favorite show--but I've listened to enough to know I like the band!)

...And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead is some fine hard rock.

Bernie Worrell and the WOO Warriors -- Bernie is probably best known for his work with PFunk and with the Talking Heads, and WOO is some great straight-up funk. Linked show features George Clinton.

Camper Van Beethoven is an odd, yet strangely compelling mix of folk and punk. They used to get a lot of airplay on our local college station back in the eighties, and I'm glad to see they're still around.

Charlie Hunter is one of the best pure jazz artists on the Archive.

Charlotte Martin is a very nice singer/songerwriter and piano player.

Dirty Dozen Brass Band -- can I get a shout-out for New Orleans? These guys got some funk!

Donna Hopkins Band plays some fine southern blues-rock, ranging from the sweet to the down-and-dirty.

Hank Williams III will never be the legend his granddad was, but IMO he's a damn sight better than his dad! With an act that ranges all over the map from ass-kickin' country to hardcore grunge-metal, HWIII is hard to pigeonhole, but a lot of fun.

Katie Todd Band plays some nice pop-rock with a touch of funk. These guys are young, but I think they could go far.

Man ... or Astroman? is a sort of psychedelic punk surf band; I don't know how to describe it better than that. They may be best known for writing the theme music to the Comedy Central show Space Ghost Coast-to-Coast. (Note: fans of early Pink Floyd will almost recognize many of the titles of the songs in the linked show.:)

The Mekons were one of the original first wave of punk bands out of Britain, but they quickly reshaped themselves into a sort of oddball punk-country band. Sort of like a cross between Gang of Four and Camper Van Beethoven. Or something like that. They've got a great sense of humor, and put on a very entertaining show.

Papa Mali is a great slide guitarist, originally from New Orleans, who does a great mix of blues and funk and voodoo invocations.

The Radiators -- can I get another shout-out for New Orleans? These guys are one of the very finest rock bands from the Big Easy, and the only reason I didn't link to a particular show is that there are so many good ones on the Archive that I couldn't choose. '85, '93 and '05 are good years to poke around in.

Soul Coughing, from the '90s, is another hard-to-classify band. VH1 calls them "art-rock/poetry/hip-hop" which doesn't really seem to do them justice to me, but I'm not sure I can come up with a better label. They're very tight, very entertaining, and have a good sense of humor.

Southern Culture on the Skids plays some fine, lighthearted rockabilly.

Whew! I think I'd better stop there, though I know I left out several good picks. This place really is an amazing resource! And I just want to thank, once again, everyone involved. Plus, of course, all the generous artists! Can I get a shout-out for the artists? YEAH! :)

Here's some more suggestions that I haven't seen recommended for a while:

http://www.archive.org/audio/etreelisting-browse.php?collection=etree&cat=Animal%20Liberation%20Orchestra
-for chill jams, good songs

Benevento/Russo Duo:
http://www.archive.org/audio/etreelisting-browse.php?collection=etree&cat=Benevento%2FRusso
-Nasty keys/drums duo - play a few sets with Mike Gordon!

Derek Trucks Band:
http://www.archive.org/audio/etreelisting-browse.php?collection=etree&cat=Derek%20Trucks%20Band
-Trucks just might be the nastiest slide guitar player EVER...also is in the current Allman Brothers lineup

Eddie from Ohio:
http://www.archive.org/audio/etreelisting-browse.php?collection=etree&cat=Eddie%20From%20Ohio
-Fun folk-rock band that has tight harmonies and great shows

Infradig:
http://www.archive.org/audio/etreelisting-browse.php?collection=etree&cat=infradig
-"Electronic" band...for fans of MMW

John Butler Trio:
http://www.archive.org/audio/etreelisting-browse.php?collection=etree&cat=John%20Butler%20Trio
-Sweet acoustic trio - plus one of the NASTIEST live acts out there

KVHW:
http://www.archive.org/audio/etreelisting-browse.php?collection=etree&cat=KVHW
-classic jams, great grooves

New Monsoon:
http://www.archive.org/audio/etreelisting-browse.php?collection=etree&cat=New%20Monsoon
-For fans of String Cheese - this band is really growing into a "jam band" staple - lots of world grooves, but they can rock too

And of course, there are plenty of others that have been hyped up lately such as Soulive, Garaj MAhal, Del McCoury Band, Charlie Hunter, Matisyahu, and your classics such as moe, String Cheese incident, Spearhead, Keller Williams, Umphrey's McGee, Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, Yonder Mountain String Band

I'm missing so much good stuff, but here's just a few...i wish there were more threads about non-Dead stuff...i mean i LOVE the Grateful Dead, but there's so much other stuff that's just as good (if not better)
