GD: Working in the Jam |
Jerzy Kosinski followed as next guest to Jerry and Bob's 1982 appearance on the David Letterman Show. He said something about writing in a trance-like state while listening to GD shows, letting his typewriter go with the rhythm of the music.
When he's done he gets up and turns the music off??? "...yes, because I don't want to waste it..."
When I first met my wife she said she didn't know much about jazz, except that she has spent many hours creating water color peices to John Coltrane. For the last year or so she's been painting to GD sbd's from this site. Mostly 2nd set free-form jams, drums, etc.
But not Space??? "...no, they're ALREADY spacey enough..."
Anyone wish to comment on a discipline, interest or past-time (other than the usual road trips, brain candy, etc.) they or someone they know supplements with GD or other intense jam music?
It seems there are so many cross-overs between music and other artistic mediums.

Re: GD: Working in the Jam |
I am an artist, more specifically a painter, and I used to work to the Dead all the time, but I stopped a few years ago. The reason is that I think listening to the Dead while I painted affected the final product too much due to my emotional ties to the Dead. I still work to spacey, transy type stuff, but i try to make it bands that I do not know very well or at all.

Re: GD: Working in the Jam |
Every once in a while I get to work early ... Or I'll work late, let the traffic subside. I'll come here and stream a show and crank thru admin bs work.. and if the jams are good I'll even shuffle some files around and tidy up.
YEEEEEEEE- HAAAAAAAAAAA. Now that's livin' !!

Re: GD: Working in the Jam |
My wife, who has a major problem w/the Dead only b/c I keep inundating her w/the music ('how many times can you listen to eyes of the world?" is a common refrain) nevertheless was thrilled when I agreed to do some yoga stretching at home as long as I could listen to the Dead while doing it. I have a bad hip and continue to play high impact sports like racquetball which just makes it worse so she's been begging me to do some yoga, as she does, for relief.
So I find a ood Dark Star or Eyes, turn the lights down low, and "assume the positions" as best I can. It really helps, b/c I don't enjoy stretching much at all.
I also put on long Dead jams any time I have a creative writing project to do.

Re: GD: Working in the Jam |
For me,there is no better music to run by than the Dead. I began running in the late seventies when the idea of being able to bring music with you on a run was ludicrous at best.
Now I download entire shows from this site to my Ipod mini and hit the road.Talk about your runners high!
I also listen to the Dead when reading, writing and walking as well as driving and watching baseball on tv.
It's easy to get lost.

Re: GD: Working in the Jam |
I find the Grateful Dead to be the perfect soundtrack for all of life. ;-) Specifically, the long jams are great for driving on long trips (pardon the pun), I did so recently through scenic Southern Colorado/Northern New Mexico to great effect. First sets are great for bouncing through town, and either one will make a traffic jam more manageable.

Re: GD: Working in the Jam |
I work from home with our online continuing education business creating new courses, admin., etc. I listen to a lot of different bands but I get into a different zone when GD is on in the background. It's hard to explain, but they take me to a place that few other bands can take me.
A few others that have a similar effect:
Jessica Simpson
Moe
Tea Leaf Green
Mr. Blotto
New Monsoon
Railroad Earth
String Cheese
Phil & Friends
Zen Tricksters
PS - Just kidding about Jessica
