Phil has talked for years about creating a "Grateful Dead" library to house live recordings. Some will recall that fundraising for this was the purported premise of the limited release "Terrapin" live CD set (now that I think about it, GDP has never really accounted for what happened to the money from that release....).

Now technology has advanced far enough along that a virtual library was created, fulfilling Phil's dream but it exists outside the band's control. Another leap in technology called IPod, with its massive public acceptance, now permits the never stated but apparently underlying premise of the library -- the unlimited ability to charge $15.99 or more for library "books". I am not necessarily saying Phil is behind all this. Unless times have really changed, it is well-documented that all major business decisions were made by the entire band. The same band that let MG be barred from Jerry's funeral and that showed its priorities when they dragged a pathetic wretch who clearly needed serious medical help along on 1995 tour that ultimately killed him.

I am bothered by what happens to the work that many individuals did gratis to reconstruct and improve upon many of the soundboards that were on the LMA. GDP will most likely ignore these individuals and pocket the profits.

I highly doubt that Phil is behind this situation. Back in May he was touring the country doing book signings for his autobiography and I talked to him about the LMA, thanking him for allowing free access to all the music. He said that he was a user of the site, especially frequently when he was writing his book. He said he used the LMA to listen to shows and help jog his memory when he was writing about them for the book. He was very positive about the LMA and I have to believe that this decision was out of his hands.

Phil & Friends are still posting their downloads on his homepage. This makes it hard to blame him for the sell out.

The new capitalist pig policy doesn't even mention the matter of shows broadcast on the radio and in wide circulation for many years. The New Riders consider these fair game according to David Nelson.

RATDOG banned SBD taping in 2003, except for the shows already in circulation. Bob Weir then adopted the Govt Mule audience tapes only policy. And now he's into that cruise ship nostalgia tour scene.

I wouldn't put sanything past Deborah Koons after her ridiculous COURT TV show trial in Marin County.

i agree with several others - hightly doubtful Phil has anything to do with this - he may have been outvoted if it came to that, but it just doesn't seem like Phil's philosophy to can GD from the Archive. i'd be willing to bet the Bob "Weir's the money" voted for it though.
