You can find Phil's whole letter at the Zone. Here's the bit that is LMA related....

Archive - I had two conversations with Cameron Sears, our CEO at GDP, regarding Archive, starting when our material first showed up there. I told Cameron that I was fine having the audience tapes up there, but that he should talk to everyone, including Bob Hunter and John Barlow, regarding the soundboards. A year later when I had not heard anything about the boards, I mentioned to Cameron that I felt by not doing anything we were making a decision about the boards and that I was fine with that. Again I urged him to talk to everyone. I was caught by complete surprise when, right before Thanksgiving, the recordings were pulled. I feel that Bobby was not updated properly and unfairly took most of the heat. A lot of our business disagreements are the result of poor communication from advisors. Bobby is my brother and I love him unconditionally; he is a very generous man, and was unfairly judged regarding the Archive issue.

In the end, what we want or enjoy in life comes down to personal preference; the best and the bravest will always follow their own path in their listening, in their reading, in their thinking, without any concern for the opinions of others.

Words of comfort whispered to the injured, words of courage whispered to the scared, words of encouragement whispered to a child, words of love whispered to the sky.

Words have great power; use them wisely.

- PHIL

Any chance of directing me towards info to do this? I'd like to use the mp3's for personal use in my vehicle and would also dig learning how to erase the 1 second buffer.

It's nice to hear Phil finally 'fess up that he was uncomfortable, or at least concerned, with the Boards being available on LMA. This clears up his earlier very ambiguous (misleading?) statements, and in fact seems to indicate that he was, if not an advocate, certainly a catalyst in this process. This does not, to me at least, vindicate Weir as much as it lumps Phil in with him. It also makes me wonder about Phil's character when he lets his "brother", whom he loves so much, take all the heat for this position for over a month and then clarifies his own position once the furor has mellowed out. At least Weir had the cojones and integrity to say "See Ya" to those of us who disagree with him. Barlow seems to be the only one who advocates full access at this time. As previously stated we will just have to keep ripping the shows in real time and editing out the buffer spaces ourselves. Personally, having been to so many loud concerts and events, my hearing at 45 years old is not quite what it used to be, so I cannot readily discern the sound differences between MP3s and lossless (Pete Townshend syndrome...LOL). I am quite content with the sound quality I can get, and of course most MP3 Boards sound better than the aud anyway although there are plenty of great auds out there as well. I continue to feel that this policy hurts the principles more than it helps them, but so be it, they are perfectly within their rights to control their legacy no matter how misguided those efforts may appear to some of us. I love the Grateful Dead as well but am saddened by this current policy.

I agree that Phil's character is called into question with this latest statement. His previous utterings indicated that he was against the new policy, and now it seems that he may have actually been the first one to worry about it and the first to bring it up. It also seems that he hung Bobby(a man he calls his brother and professes his unconditional love for) out to dry (with friends like that......!!). While I still oppose this move, I am disappointed that Phil seems to have been somewhat disingenuous in his initial remarks and let Bobby take the brunt of the criticism. Anyway, it seems that we may never get the lossless sbd downloads back. I would still love to hear from Hunter on this issue.

I'm unsure how people come to the assumption that Phil "let" Bobby take heat. A month or so transpired since right before Thanksgiving until these statements from Phil. I'd imagine this issue wasn't in the forefront of either Phil or Bob's minds while it was being sorted out. I'll accept Phil's assertions that there were miscommunications between the involved parties.

Yes, the worm has certainly turned since JG's death. The bottom line, these days, is it's music they created and they can do with it what they please. It's a drag only because we've become accustomed to receiving "free" music from them for so long. For that, they should be thanked, not villified. Do I wish we had the same access to boards still? Ahem, hell yeah.

Please don't capture SBD streams and encode / trade the dead shows. You are adding unneccessary loss to the chain and degrading the original audio source. You can still find those SBD lossless files elsewhere. just look.

Tyler, just to put your mind at ease, I haven't actually traded in years. I direct people I know, and who are interested in acquiring showsto the various sites so they can control their own collections. I rip these shows for my own listening pleasure, especially in my car where I spend the bulk of my time due to my job, and for this purpose the MP3s work just fine for me.
