A longstanding LMA feature request is to have some kind of genre labelling to help sort the thousands of bands, some prior topics. It's probably not really doable to implement until sometime after the big move to the new petabox system. Meanwhile, there have been recent upgrades to the Internet Archive Bookmarks function, including personal comments. I was just thinking, if I bookmark 1 example show per band where the band IMO fits a type of genre, and labelled the example with that genre, I would make my own band keyword system. So, I was thinking of "mapping" a few of my personal favorite categories: jazz, instrumental and maybe surf (and maybe even "Hammond B3"). Then people with any of my tastes who look at my bookmarks could quickly see those genres. If other people did thorough jobs with other genres in their bookmarks, and we had a thread listing those folks' bookmarks, it could be an ad-hoc genre system. Is this worth trying or too kooky?

I recognized quite some time ago how competent you are, Diana, but I didn't realize how resourceful and innovative you can be. This sounds like a great idea. I must confess, though, that I haven't been making use of bookmarks, so I'm a bit vague about how this might work in practice. How about implementing it for yours, so you can show us?

My bookmarks for my standard id are too messily cross-collection to illustrate with that, so I made a sample on my IA-testing id, http://www.archive.org/bookmarks/DianaPatron Maybe I'll even stick with that for my little project. To bookmark anything in the Archive, go to the item's details page and click the Bookmark This link (should be around the lower left). Your bookmarks will show up, with your item added. You can refer to your bookmarks independently by clicking Patron Info in the top menubar of any page, then Archive Bookmarks on the purple bar. You can see anyone else's bookmarks by subbing in their patron id instead (use %20 for spaces to make it a working url; other special characters may need other codes).

As a new user, I'd love to see genres labels--there's a huge amount of information to cull through, so contextualizing everything in this way could be really useful. I have some questions/suggestions:

1. Would it be possible to label artists rather than performances?

2. Would it be possible to come up with a way to distinguish between bookmarks intended to identify an artist's genre (or genres) and booksmarks intented to serve as del.icio.us-like tags? I see Rock or Tango or Big Band falling into the former category and Hammond B3 falling into the latter.

3. Would it be possible to come up with a standard list of genres (such as those identified in IDv1+Winamp ) and then programmatically encourage compliance (i.e., through pulldowns)? Contributors would still be able to tags to indicate information that is important to them (and might have value to others, just as del.icio.us leverages users' individual tags to fuel sharing)?

4. Will it be possible to map bookmarks to their successor data fields once the petabox is installed or will we have to redo our genre identification work?

1. Would it be possible to label artists rather than performances? No, not with the ad-hoc bookmarks idea. It's just, choose an example show for the artist. 2. Would it be possible to come up with a way to distinguish between bookmarks intended to identify an artist's genre (or genres) and booksmarks intented to serve as del.icio.us-like tags? I see Rock or Tango or Big Band falling into the former category and Hammond B3 falling into the latter. I'm not personally familiar with del.icio.us but again ad hoc, I imagine people could do that if they want! It's just a matter of adding or not adding certain comment descriptions to their bookmarks. I'm adding Hammond (or a few other supplementary instrument notes) to my jazz or instrumental bookmarks, because I personally care about that distinction. 3. Would it be possible to come up with a standard list of genres... and then programmatically encourage compliance Significant programmatic changes for any of this stuff would probably have to wait until after the move (and probably after periods to fix post-move bugs and to evaluate the collection's needs on different levels). 4. Will it be possible to map bookmarks to their successor data fields once the petabox is installed or will we have to redo our genre identification work? Good question, no idea there! Especially since any future genre arrangement is just at the suggestion stage.

Great idea diana! .. i'll get started on my contribution / bookmarks asap. I know i've been harping about the genre system for forever now, so it's good that the average user can finally do something about it, rather then just complain about lack of archive action.

I'd like to see this thread become where people post links to their bookmarks if they have done this genre style. I know I will when my list gets going!

If anyone else wants to pick a favorite geographical area to point to, that could be cool too. I love how we have strong representation from some areas: Boston, San Diego, maybe Pittsburgh. (I wonder if we could coax xtifr or Fishead into bookmark-keywording "New Orleans"? ;) )

Here is my new bookmark for genres:

http://www.archive.org/bookmarks/TylerPatron

Watch for a lot of singer/songwriter, acoustic, and indie stuff, as well as some jazz and a little 'grey area' stuff.
