Hey all - with the new system in place I thought this might be of use to new and old uploaders alike. Feel free to chime in and add or correct stuff if I'm missing anything. The sample show I'm uploading in this instance is Blues Traveler, 11-21-90; the folder is named bt1990-11-21.flac16 on my hard drive, so I'm including my information so it's absolutely clear what should be included. 1) Go to http://www.archive.org/create.php?lma=1 2) In "Band Abbreviation", type bt 3) In "Concert date", type 1990-11-21 4) In "Rest of identifier", type flac16 (note: no period before "flac16") 5) Hit "Create item!" It'll say "checking for item identifier availability..." and then "Identifier is free. Setting up FTP upload directory for you..." Finally, it'll tell you which FTP server to connect to - use the one in step 2 (unless you're using IE, in which case you're on your own). The FTP it gives me is ia301126.us.archive.org but yours will be different. 6) Open the FTP client of your choice and connect to the server provided. Like the page says, there should already be a folder there - mine is named bt1990-11-21.flac16 7) Upload the files into that directory (FLACs, FFP, TXT, etc.). 8) Once the upload is done, download the "CLICK_HERE_WHEN_DONE.htm" file, or go to the "checkin" URL for your show. The link should look like this: www.archive.org / checkin / bt1990-11-21.flac16 (minus the spaces - don't want to link it up) 9) It might say "Not ready yet. Waiting 10 seconds for checkin..." a few times, but eventually the page will load and say "You may now see your updated item at: http://www.archive.org/details/bt1990-11-21.flac16". Click the link. 10) Go down to the THIRD menu ("Put my etree item into collection:"), choose your band from the drop-down list, and hit "submit etree". 11) You're now at a screen that says "Metadata editor for bt1990-11-21.flac16". Enter the setlist, date, subject, venue, coverage, source, lineage, taper, transferrer, run time, md5's, and notes. 12) In the "Files, formats, and derivations" area at the bottom, "Title" - song title; "Creator" - band; "Album" = YYYY-MM-DD - Venue, and "Track" = track number. Enter as much or as little of that info as you want, though more is better. :) 13) Choose whether you want derivatives or not, and click "Submit". 14) Wait. Within about 5 minutes, the page will be live and the FLACs will be ready for download. Within an hour or so, the derivatives will start popping up as well. By tomorrow, the whole show should be good to go, FLACs, mp3s, oggs, the works. Congratulations, your show is now public! (edited instructions slightly on 8/27, nothing else changed)

No kidding. You used to be able to batch upload all the shows you wanted to submit to one host (no interaction thanks to .netrc) and then go to the contribution page after they were finished uploading. How long is the old upload ftp site going to be in operation?

I can see the reasoning behind releasing a highlight of a show as a bonus disc but it seems like they constantly pick the wrong shows to chop vs what they release whole. guess as in that post LIA posted its really driven home that they really dont know what the fans want although to be fair we dont always agree ourselves

Great info Thanks

"How long is the old upload ftp site going to be in operation? "

If you are referring to audio-uploads.archive.org .. please DO NOT continue to upload to that server. Follow the above directions. Uploaded shows to audio-uploads.archive.org (the old server system) will not be easily included in the LMA system and it is just a big headache for everyone involved. Yes, it sucks that batch uploads are no longer easily done. If you want to upload several shows at once, a possibility is to open several instances of your FTP program, and start the process for each individual show. good luck!

I just wasted 2 freaking days of uploading a large batch of shows just to find out when I finished that the process has changed. You should REALLY disable the old ftp login so that uploads to it are no longer possible. 2 days wasted. Total crap.

I'm much calmer today. Sorry 'bout that. Just...the realization that I spent 2 days uploading for nothing.....ouch.

Yeah, Charlie! Please don't stop uploading those sick Kimock recordings! Like I said earlier in the week, your stage recordings deserve to win a freakin award! They are just absolutley amazing sounding.

Those matrix SKB shows are something else too! I wouldn't mind hearing some more of them! ;) They send me into a different state of reality. Yikes!

A 'more recent' revision of the upload process was put together on 2007-08-06. this is the new 'authoritative' PDF of upload procedure. The step by step is located here:

alternate way to upload to an existing item:

1. go to archive.org/upload?identifier=BnR129090673 then hit your return key
2. drag your file into the graybox
3. click the "Add files to existing item" button

i am not an engineer so there is only so deep my explanations can go. while i don't discount the transition pains i can say that, as far as i know, in this case there is no beta vs classic issues related to uploading. both versions of the site use the same uploaders. if uploading failed the issue was something else.

what makes helping difficult is when i can't duplicate the problem so can't try to solve it or escalate it to an engineer. i just successfully upload and item and added a file to it. it's at https://archive.org/details/test21050622

i'm not sure if i've asked you before but what OS/browser did you use? what other browser might you have tried?

Despite your current experience, you are able to add files to an existing upload. I can't give you a technical explanation why you are getting a server I/O error when you try to do so. It is not because it is not allowed. Something else is interfering with the upload.

If I had access to the WAV file, I would try to upload on your behalf. If you want to try to send it to me via dropbox or wetransfer or whatever other file transfer service you want to use, I will attempt to upload it to see if I am also getting a server I/O error.

I haven't tried it but I just wanted to say thank you for getting the text together to help the users upload shows. Glad someone did it! :)
