I think he'd rather be with us too but that's just me.

Here are my two favourite SOTM's, where he really let loose on guitar on an epic Morning Dew level.

Cal Expo 5/4/91
Autzen Stadium 8/21/93

I was at both shows so it has the sheen of bias but what can I say?

My first SOTM was Greensboro, NC 3/31/89 at the end of a first set. No guitar solo. The audience seemed a bit stymied by it, being such a new song with no climax. Who ends a set this way? Oh yeah. These guys. I thought then, as soon as Jerry snaps out a solo at the end of that tune it'll become a classic. First time I saw that done was at Alpine a few months later. By the time I saw it done at Copps Coliseum in 1990 out of Victim (a superb combo by the way) to close a first set yet again the song had arrived.

I was always let down by the way Jer chose to sing the climactic moment and forgo a solo at the end but he may have been no longer capable of playing like that. That's why the big guitar and jam numbers shrank or disappeared and the ballads became simply (often heartfelt) vocal moments. With this song I felt it really suffered. I felt the same way about Days Between where a truly strong solo (Buffalo '93 for instance) balances the song's sombreness. But there are so many fine SOTMs out there. Those two I mention above remain my faves.

Keep us informed, Tom. Thanks.

Using Deadbase, I’ve isolated each of the 68 occurrences of SOTM and have been tuning in to the archive.org to listen and review. I am trying to avoid listening out of context (i.e. where possible, I try to listen to the entire show, the entire set, or at the very least any song that transitions into and out of SOTM) to get the vibe of the crowd or any thematic overtones (i.e. songs about the Earth –Throwing Stones, We Can Run, etc.). I also tried to consider venue (is it a CA show or better yet in SF?). Other caveats considered: earlier performances (where the band and crowd is less familiar w/ the song), solo development, accentuation of lyrics (i.e. "I rather beeee with you"), in tune/out of tune, sentimentality (you’ll notice that Jerry gets quite choked up, especially on the earlier Spring 89 versions).

I’ve begun to give it the Tie-Dyed Tom rating (not official and not endorsed by the Grateful Dead, archive.org or any other rating agency). The task is taking quite a while so, anyone else willing to listen through can have at it w/ the following list. I'll publish top 10 w/ justification once I get through it all. Here's the list:

I have always loved just about all of Hunter's lyrics - but not SOTM. Always felt very mundane and pedestrian to me. Just never struck me as anything deep (not that every song has to), but it always sounded like a fluff piece. Except for some good solo's/jams at the end of a few versions, i usually just skip over the song.
Always loved the nuclear holocaust theme in Dew - certainly depressing, but Jerry just does "something" with that song to make it great - ala 9/18/87 - the best ever imho

9-18-87 YES! I love it too. I don't think it's best but I'd be hard pressed to find another version better since 77. THis should be a topic in itself. Where the hell is 9-18-87 on this site? Quality AUDs are out there. Maybe it's slotted for release? The women are smarter on there is probably my favoirite too.

Of course the other occasion is when i'm cryin a tear in my beer, for love long lost-LOL (beats COL)
There were times when Jerry made an average song magic-in any case i'm going to check out 9/18/87

Hope you had a great day at the show my friend. If you don't have the 9/18/87 second set i will be more than happy to send it to you as well (couldn't tell from your post if you have it or not). Peace

Hey now, different strokes and all that. For example I've never been that fond of Row Jimmy, Easy Answers, Victim Or The Crime, Samba in the Rain, among others...more the sound than the lyric's though.

"Standing on the moon, where talk is cheap and vision true
Standing on the moon, but I would rather be with you
Somewhere in San Francisco on a back porch in July
Just looking up to heaven at this crescent in the sky
In the sky-in the sky"

To me >> the moon is a lonely and desolate place where one can see the termoil in the "promise land" in true vision.
>> About love lost where true sight and vision cannot equal the warmth of the intimacy of "but I'd rather be with you". First, on the moon looking, then the dream of looking at the sky with one's honey bunch-heh.
(for me, a redhead loooong ago-lol)So I metaphor
it to death...eh....oh well, I stand on the moon way too much i suspect-do i have issues or what?!
In a way, I wish I DID'NT like the song-lol
Btw, I don't have a good "uncaptured" looseless copy of 9/18/87, I would appreciate one-thank you!

Blashpemy!!! lol I love Row Jimmy - athough at times it can become amazingly boringly repetitive at the end - one of the "c'mon already" moments. The other three i could do without, even though Victim can have some seriously good gloomy jams at times.

Will be glad to send you the 9/18 second set (and first if i can find the damn disc). I'll assume that your return address is the one i should send it to?? Only thing I need is your zip code (naughty, naughty, it wasn't on your return address). :) Wont be able to get it out til wednesday or thursday as i must rely on others to go to post office for me (i'm ready to rip this f'in full cast off) lol

The Jerryday was excellent!! the weather was warm and sunny most all day, I got there early when the dragonflies owned the grass, a very cool scene. I was impressed by Dejango Obscura, especially the Dear Prudence > Darkstar- Nice! Anyone else here, make it there?

Hey man - There are back-porches. But I agree, you'll need a sweater. I grew up there too. Love afternoon ball games where people from the central valley show up in shorts and tee-shirts and by the 5th inning freezing their nuts right-off.

Dew dwarfs SOTM. No argument here. SOTM is just sentimental to so many Bay Area heads...

I liked that line too. The line I don't like is Crimson White and Indigo. It's red white and blue fercryinoutloud! I lived in the east bay so was more of an A's fan than Giants. I love that interview with Jerry, around when they were singing the national anthem. He states that he follows them when the season heats up and that he's a San Francisco supporter. Right on Jer! Support the hometown. I used to like to allways say that the Dead was the Bay Area house band. : )

Kind of true if you think about it. Never had to travel, they played more shows than I could afford just right at home or between Oakland,Cal Expo, and Shoreline

Hi UJD - Yes. I grew-up in Hayward. Definetely an A's fan. I worked at the Coliseum for the A's and Warriors from '87-'92 and saw many free shows. Saved seats for Bill Walton and his lady. 4th row(extra wide) Jerry's side. By saving seats for people w/ connections, I was able to see Shoreline shows for free too. Backstage a few times. No big news there. Quick beer and no line for the toilet, were the biggest advantages to having a backstage pass. Cal Expo was my favorite venue. I loved the warm nighttime weather, so I moved to Chico. Also traveled to Eugene and AZ, where I sold GD merch(stickers) and Tie-dye in the lot. JGB and GD were, indeed, our local house bands. How lucky were we??

Wow ! Sounds like you had some cool connections! I knew a dude who worked the colliseum - got me some cool seats for some shows, this was before I saw the Dead. In fact one of these shows was John Fogerty in 86, guess who the opening band was? Bruce Hornsby and the Range. Even though I knew about the Dead I didn't officially see my first show until Shoreline 89.

I lived in Hayward when I was a youngster. Lived in Alameda my later years. Used to see A's games ALL the time. My Dad had a line on killer third base dugout seats. Nothing better than a Saturday double header when it's actually warm! These were in what should have been their second dynasty with McGuire, Canseco ( even though he's an A-hole ) , and Henderson.

One of my only brushes with the Dead was I worked at the Tower Records in Berkely. One night BRent came in. I got his autograph but since lost it. Have to say it was WEIRD. HE was F'd up ( which isn't weird and I was a lot in those days myself ) but you could tell he was allmost surprised anyone recognized him. Very awkward, seemed self effacing.

Anyways - ramble ramble ramble.

Yes I loved Cal Expo and yes we were very lucky. Wished I hadn't barely missed the even smaller venues they were playing right up to 89 - kaiser, frost, greek

In concert against AIDS w/ Los Lobos, Fogerty and the Dead(w/ Randy Jackson of Journey and American Idol fame). Ick. However, I call 12/6/89 my 1st show because that is the night my life changed(thanks to the pre-show snacks).

The writing was on the wall for the Jays when the season began with our new star pitcher out with an injury. Dare I say it's because of the owner? He seems ready to spend the cash but when the latest trades happened all Management could say was there were slim pickings but that didn't stop other teams. I must confess I haven't followed it closely this year. I haven't been to a game since my kids were born (four year old twins) and I swore off the team until Rogers (a cable tv magante who gets rich by digging holes in the ground and letting me surf the web) bought the team. I was filled with hope that he could be a Steinbrenner (deep pockets) type but there is only one Steinbrenner which is probably a good thing. Or maybe the two World Series in a row jinxed us? Or maybe it's
a vast conspiracy to keep a Canadian team out of the Pennant race.

Now that you mention it. I'm going ro read the Sports pages I've been saving with all the Jays stuff and get back to you. But I'll probably start a new thread so look for it. I always thought the Grateful Dead were like baseball anyway with the (mostly male)obsession with statistics and length of shows etc.

Oh yeah. Standing on the Moooooon!

I gotta say having just played them both that 5/4/91 eclipses the Boston '93. I do like the Boston. It's moving. It kicks but the closing solo's a little short for my taste. But like I said, it's all what you're looking for in a SOTM. The Cal Expo version has a closing solo that's just phenomenal. Sadly, the version on this site is a soundboard where Vince's ubiquitous synth wash threatens to upseat Garcia's work completely (All due reaspect but is this Vince's personal mix? I mean come on!). But you can still hear it, especiall round two. Listen to the rest of the band suddenly realize that they've got a tiger by the tail. Hoooahhh! My sweet Audience recording of the show has much cleaner guitar sound with Vince back where he should be, and of course a crowd going apeshit. Wish I had the technology in my home to upload for y'all.
