Here are my two favourite SOTM's, where he really let loose on guitar on an epic Morning Dew level.
Cal Expo 5/4/91
Autzen Stadium 8/21/93
I was at both shows so it has the sheen of bias but what can I say?
My first SOTM was Greensboro, NC 3/31/89 at the end of a first set. No guitar solo. The audience seemed a bit stymied by it, being such a new song with no climax. Who ends a set this way? Oh yeah. These guys. I thought then, as soon as Jerry snaps out a solo at the end of that tune it'll become a classic. First time I saw that done was at Alpine a few months later. By the time I saw it done at Copps Coliseum in 1990 out of Victim (a superb combo by the way) to close a first set yet again the song had arrived.
I was always let down by the way Jer chose to sing the climactic moment and forgo a solo at the end but he may have been no longer capable of playing like that. That's why the big guitar and jam numbers shrank or disappeared and the ballads became simply (often heartfelt) vocal moments. With this song I felt it really suffered. I felt the same way about Days Between where a truly strong solo (Buffalo '93 for instance) balances the song's sombreness. But there are so many fine SOTMs out there. Those two I mention above remain my faves.
Keep us informed, Tom. Thanks.

Always loved the nuclear holocaust theme in Dew - certainly depressing, but Jerry just does "something" with that song to make it great - ala 9/18/87 - the best ever imho

Sorry that i must disagree with you for once - SOTM just never ever did it for me at all. I just always have to hit "next track" on the cd console.
Hope you had a great day at the show my friend. If you don't have the 9/18/87 second set i will be more than happy to send it to you as well (couldn't tell from your post if you have it or not). Peace

"Standing on the moon, where talk is cheap and vision true
Standing on the moon, but I would rather be with you
Somewhere in San Francisco on a back porch in July
Just looking up to heaven at this crescent in the sky
In the sky-in the sky"
To me >> the moon is a lonely and desolate place where one can see the termoil in the "promise land" in true vision.
>> About love lost where true sight and vision cannot equal the warmth of the intimacy of "but I'd rather be with you". First, on the moon looking, then the dream of looking at the sky with one's honey bunch-heh.
(for me, a redhead loooong ago-lol)So I metaphor
it to death...eh....oh well, I stand on the moon way too much i suspect-do i have issues or what?!
In a way, I wish I DID'NT like the song-lol
Btw, I don't have a good "uncaptured" looseless copy of 9/18/87, I would appreciate one-thank you!

I lived in Hayward when I was a youngster. Lived in Alameda my later years. Used to see A's games ALL the time. My Dad had a line on killer third base dugout seats. Nothing better than a Saturday double header when it's actually warm! These were in what should have been their second dynasty with McGuire, Canseco ( even though he's an A-hole ) , and Henderson.
One of my only brushes with the Dead was I worked at the Tower Records in Berkely. One night BRent came in. I got his autograph but since lost it. Have to say it was WEIRD. HE was F'd up ( which isn't weird and I was a lot in those days myself ) but you could tell he was allmost surprised anyone recognized him. Very awkward, seemed self effacing.
Anyways - ramble ramble ramble.
Yes I loved Cal Expo and yes we were very lucky. Wished I hadn't barely missed the even smaller venues they were playing right up to 89 - kaiser, frost, greek

Now that you mention it. I'm going ro read the Sports pages I've been saving with all the Jays stuff and get back to you. But I'll probably start a new thread so look for it. I always thought the Grateful Dead were like baseball anyway with the (mostly male)obsession with statistics and length of shows etc.

I gotta say having just played them both that 5/4/91 eclipses the Boston '93. I do like the Boston. It's moving. It kicks but the closing solo's a little short for my taste. But like I said, it's all what you're looking for in a SOTM. The Cal Expo version has a closing solo that's just phenomenal. Sadly, the version on this site is a soundboard where Vince's ubiquitous synth wash threatens to upseat Garcia's work completely (All due reaspect but is this Vince's personal mix? I mean come on!). But you can still hear it, especiall round two. Listen to the rest of the band suddenly realize that they've got a tiger by the tail. Hoooahhh! My sweet Audience recording of the show has much cleaner guitar sound with Vince back where he should be, and of course a crowd going apeshit. Wish I had the technology in my home to upload for y'all.
