Forum: opensource_movies Subject: What's with the flood of arab stuff?

Something weird is going on here. The OPEN SOURCE section is filling up with tons of what appear to be Islamic video footage of sermons and speeches and attacks with tanks and weapons and all kinds of crazy stuff. There's frequently no description at all, so there's no way to know what the stuff is untill it's downloaded. Lots of these are audio files, even though this is a video section. Many of the files with arab-sounding names are compressed into RAR and ZIP archives, and some are password protected, with no password supplied. Some of the uploads are not movies at all, but mislabeled archives stuffed with non-video files contained inside more archives. It's like someone is trying to hide something.

Is the OPEN SOURCE section being abused as a remote file host for some party with an agenda? Don't password-protected archives violate the very idea of open source?

An example, featuring six minutes of footage of what appears to be western troops being blown up with roadside and car bombs:
http://www.archive.org/details/iraqi_hell
When someone is blown into fragments, a little circle appears onscreen to highlight the largest falling body parts.

Many of the posts feature a video bug or accompanying jpeg of this image:
http://ia331331.us.archive.org/1/items/abuhamza__almouhajir/chora.jpg

When I click SEE RECENT ADDITIONS, I get a page of fifty files. As I type this, about twenty of those files are the mystery Islam ones.

I only check a few OPEN SOURCE MOVIE files once or twice a week, frequently at random, but I keep bumping into these things.

What the heck?

Hi,

Perhaps you could let them know, then, that if we run accross something that is password protected, we take it down.

This is not a free hosting service. It's an archive. If the material is not accessible to everyone, we don't want it.

I've think http://www.archive.org might want to password protect the files here or something.

I monitor several Arabic web sites, this is the file host of choice for many months now for real life jihadi propaganda.

www.alneda.com which used to be the al Qaeda website is now American owned and is directed to an international discussion forum at www.wincoast.com.

If you were to check the video section, or the alneda forums, which is primarily Arabic translations, you will see that http://www.archive.org has been the host of choice, as I said earlier, for some time now.

You can contact me at casey_britton@yahoo.ca if you need any more information.

For the record, as I post this these 2 directories

http://ia301203.us.archive.org/1/items/AbuMusabSyrian2/

http://ia301215.us.archive.org/0/items/AbuMusabSyrian3/

hold material that was uploaded in June. They consist of pictures and videos that link all over the web including militant forums.

One of those videos may well be the one referred to in todays news:

Top Qaeda leader urges fighters to hit White House

http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20061010/ts_nm/security_qaeda_libi_dc

DUBAI (Reuters) - A man believed to be a top al Qaeda militant who escaped from a U.S. jail near Kabul was shown in a new videotape broadcast on Tuesday exhorting followers in Afghanistan to fight on until they attack the White House.

"Allah will not be pleased until we reach the rooftop of the White House," Abu Yahya al-Libi was shown telling fighters in the tape aired by the Dubai-based Al-Arabiya television.

The channel said the tape was one-hour long, showing footage of Libi urging fighters to train hard and even to try to acquire nuclear technology.

"You have to get well prepared by starting with exercise, and then you have to learn how to use technology until you are capable of nuclear weapons," he said.

Libi was shown in the footage bearded and wearing a long grey Muslim robe while standing in front of a group of fighters.

Libi is believed to be the alias of Libyan Mohammad Hassan who along with three other al Qaeda militants broke out of the U.S. jail at Bagram Air Base last year.

Analysts say he is an influential militant preacher, better known for recruiting fighters than for actual combat.

Arabiya said the authenticity of the tape could not be verified, but experts had told its bureau in Afghanistan the video was filmed in the southeast of the country.

British troops in Iraq said in September they killed one of the four al Qaeda escapees -- Omar Faruq, one of Osama bin Laden's top lieutenants -- in the city of Basra.

I just looked today and found more of the same. Here's an encrypted RAR archive:
http://www.archive.org/details/fmaaak
I have no time to hunt down more right now.

If I was a curator here, I'd delete all RARs from this section of the archive, encrypted or not. I'd delete all sound files, or move them to an audio section. That would shake out a lot of this weird stuff. I'd explicitly post a no-remote-hosting policy, in case there isn't one already. I'd move all jihadist video to its own section, to avoid muddying the already overstuffed OPEN SOURCE collection. DRIVE-IN MOVIE ADS and other specialized collections exist.

Hi Frank,

We do generally take down rar and zip files when we come across them, password protected or not. It says in the FAQs and on the checkout page when you create an item not to upload these sorts of files.

However, we don't mind if people upload files here and then remotely host them elsewhere. The point I was making is that it has to be a two way street - users of this site have to be able to access the content, not just users of a remote site. So remote hosting is fine - password protecting your files is not.

We do have a section in the Iraq War collection for "jihadist" videos that appear to be about Iraq. Since nobody here speaks Arabic, we're mostly just guessing about that, though.
http://www.archive.org/details/iraq_middleeast

Please do feel free to submit error reports for rar files or for things that you think should be in the Iraq collection.

Thanks,

Alexis

If any of that "Arab stuff" supports the Islamic Jihad DECLARED against the USA and the West, it should not be allowed in the archive at this time of war -imo. Nazi propaganda was NOT tolorated in WW2, and Jihadist propaganda should not be tolorated here. (Free speech my ass!)

An LSD mist, followed by a rain-storm of pre-rolled doobies, followed by blasting renditions of Uncle John's Band and Ripple. If that doesn't change their religion and get them to put down their weapons, we're doomed.

Imagine CNN showing pictures from Iraq and Afganistan of people dancing in the streets with big signs showing pictures of The Oprah and chanting, "Op-rah, Op-rah, Op-rah...".

ive actually chased windmills before - in Holland - thanks for the memory recall. Some serious hash and some green bud with a few graduate student budies of mine while studying at Oxford. We took a fun fun excursion. Thank god the dutch drive on the right side of the road. We stopped at farms with windmills and tulips and sat upon the farmers donkeys taking picutures while the farmer just smiled at us. Then up at Den Helder, we stood atop the sea dam with the water licking at our feet and our car hundreds of feet below us under sea level. will never forget. what a beatiful beautiful country and awesome people - the dutch truly make one feel right at home - even us red-eyed americans trying to have some fun. went to carnivals and out of the way restaurants in little teeny villages. damn that was a real trip

yeah - 200 feet higher than New Orleans. Why is that?? Why could not we do better when Hollands levees have been there for decades???? I just dont understand. Is it because New Orleans is poor and black??? Methinks that may have something to do with it unfortunately. I am no conspiracy theorist, but our gov. failed the city of new orleans, state of louisiana and the state of mississippi. For what real reason, i'm not sure - im a pathetic little new englander. Just makes me sick knowing that things still aren't right down there, but we build up other countries instead of our own. enough. i havent even begun to vent, and i will go no further. i am sick!

Gee, think you may want to find someone who DOES speak Arabic?

If Archive.Org is hosting matierial that is potentially harmful to the US or it's allies, then it's giving aid and comfort to the enemy. As much as I love Archive.Org, maybe the FBI needs to be made aware of what's going on.

'The enemy'?

If the goal of the internet archive is to maintain a collection of information -- such as did the library of Alexandria, 'the enemy' is anyone who restricts the free flow and collection of information.

Anyone who places restrictions on freedom of speech.

Anyone who places restrictions on free assembly.

Any government that covers up the truth and restricts information about what they are really doing.

Sound familiar?

Who is the REAL enemy?

Use your brains while you still have the right to do so and figure it out. If the US was doing to my neighborhood what they are doing to neighborhoods in Iraq, I'd be on a jihad myself. Wouldn't you? Or do you think that whatever "the president" says is the law, and whatever the law is is right???

That's silly. I agree, we don't have to destroy the US to save it.

I'm sure the FBI is aware -- and they themselves might have arranged to get these things posted! On your end, why not just post a warning comment in what you find objectionable?

It seems to me that archive.org needs to get help from Arabic and other Middle Eastern language specialists in order to sift through the Middle Eastern footage and find out exactly what it is saying. Why not approach some of the university Middle East area studies departments around the world and ask for volunteer advisors from faculty and/or students? I am thinking of places like the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) at London University.

Given the importance of the Middle East in current politics, I would have thought that financing an Arabic-speaking staffer should be included in your next funding bid.

I have said before in other posts in the Iraq Collection forum that the Web is an international medium like no other. Archive.org needs to become less US/English-language centric as an institution. That should be reflected in its staff and professional language advice.

I agree that password protected archive files ahould be removed. However, I am not in favour of removing material because it is politically partisan or "un-American". The pro-war Bush viewpoint is vastly over-represented in the corprorate media (e.g. Murdoch's Fox News, Sky News). Censorship is not the answer. If you don't like the TV programme, you don't have to watch it. Change the channel.

Hello, I hesitate to write this. I will be very direct, Please forgive me being so blunt. First let me say that I am a tree hugging liberal. As a Christian, and a veteran, I am against the war and Mr Bush. I have had no use for Mr Bush since he took power. I am over 50 years old and feel Bush is ripping our freedoms from us. I think free speech is at risk in this country and strongly resist any censorship. I feel strongly that Mr. Bush is using fear to herd us like cattle and force us to give up our freedoms with the false promise of "Security". Too many people in my family died to give us our freedom for someone like "Bush" to just give it away. That's the end of my soapbox speech. Now I want to say that I also spent 6 years as a United States Air Force Security Specialist. What I am reading here is freaking me out. It sounds like someone really needs to look into this. Zip files with passwords and other red flags here have had me sweating for two days. I hate it that I feel the need to write this. I love the archive because it embraces free speech. I resist the idea of removing something from the archive just because "I dont understand it", but I think we need to use a little common sense. I agree with another suggestion I saw in the Forum, that contacting a local university would be a great idea if the archive does not wish to involve the authorities. I am glad to hear that the Archive will not knowingly allow encrypted or password protected material. Still, I feel strongly this should not be ignored. I am part of a small video editors group in Florida. We talked and we all feel censorship is NOT the answer. Knowledge is power. The world needs more knowledge - less killing on all sides.....Finally... may I suggest, as I saw elsewhere in the Forum, that moving these materials to the Iraq war section, or perhaps to create an Arabic section within the archive would seem wise to me. Of course I am not the one doing the work, so that's easy for me to say. But still I think that a Arabic section might eventually seem like a smart thing.........Frankly, I hope the archive comes to be available everywhere. I would like to see a German section and a French and one for each country on the earth. The Archive and it's materials give me hope for freedom in the future, in a time when millions of American need hope the most. Please keep up the good work Archive!..............I came back to correct my post. After I thought about it, I would like to edit my suggestion. I suggest a Foreign Language Section instead of an Arabic section. It could cover Spanish, German, Arabic, Whatever. I learned German and French in a library, why not Arabic?

So.....the Internet Archive now has as good a collection of Jihad weapons, attack, training materials, including recipes for poisons and bomb, lessons in security for mujihideen, ect. as I do.

As I said, I have been tracking this infomation for several years now. The spread of radical thinking utilizing the internet is only now being understood.

Don't get me wrong, I think the Internet Archive is a GREAT idea from what I have been seeing however, I would hope that the powers that be who run this site might consider blocking hot linking of the archived material. Similar to how geocities used to do it, so if a person weren't actually AT this site, there would be no way they could view the material by clicking an internet archive link elsewhere.

-------------------------------------------------

So all the files mentioned in the message below are running off of the internet archive site, currently.

I don't want to keep putting the wincoast link here as I did post it earlier.

Explanation of the following files and publications can be found at wincoast. And I started an Internet Archive thread there, should anyone care to follow up.
