Brutal "Cosmic Charlie" tease (before "Wharf Rat"), and the AUD lets you hear the emotional roller coaster the heads were on at the time:

Laced with the "Dark Star" teases that almost killed me:

Bet there's been lots of painful teases over the years; anyone have a tantalizing tale?

What I think it comes down to is how they pulled off the transition from one song to another. Sometimes they obviously know where they're going and it's just a seamless switch straight into the next number. Sometimes there are long exploratory journeys to be taken before we get to the next stop along the line - but, I still think the boys, at least, know where they're going. Sometimes we go by the scenic route, sometimes we get there on the express.
Then, maybe there are times when the guys aren't quite sure where they'll end up once they've started off. Somebody throws out a suggestion, somebody else picks it up,or throws back an alternative... 'Takes time, you pick a place to go...'and eventually we're roaring into the next station. So I reckon those are your teases, the band tossing ideas around, maybe even throwing favourite musical quotations at each other just for the hell of it.
Just my thoughts anyway.

I remember listening in the dark with headphones, after a puff of spinach, and the 2 minute intro to St. Stephen seemed to last for 20 minutes...

On 6/25/91 Garcia pulls out a wrenching (for me) "Rubin" tease just before settling on "Tennessee." Hearing one earlier in that tour made me want MORE...

Oh, and lobster12, "Comes a Time" came out of Space that night...I was sure it was a tease until the man stepped to the mic.

At the time, we were catching many JGB gigs at the various Keystones, and we were all SURE that they were going into Prudence. Check out the recording here and you can hear when the crowd recognizes it--and Jer immediately drops into Peter. Oh well, goes to show you can never tell.

It was so tantalizing, and it seemed that Phil, at least, was ready willing and able, but alas it was not to be.
