Greetings. Someone recently reviewed 2/27/94 and it got me to thinking about teases (...the GD variety, that is), and how exhilarating and/or painful they could be. For me, 6/17/91 was brutal. At the time I had been to 35 or 40 shows and had yet to hear a "Dark Star," so the many teases that laced that night almost killed me I swear. (I even got in the New Years show that year and didn't hear one!?). Sometimes I wonder if the boys had a sadistic side...

Brutal "Cosmic Charlie" tease (before "Wharf Rat"), and the AUD lets you hear the emotional roller coaster the heads were on at the time:

Laced with the "Dark Star" teases that almost killed me:

Bet there's been lots of painful teases over the years; anyone have a tantalizing tale?

For myself,I don't think the Dead teased in that way - maybe tantalised a time or two, but certainly nothing 'sadistic'.

What I think it comes down to is how they pulled off the transition from one song to another. Sometimes they obviously know where they're going and it's just a seamless switch straight into the next number. Sometimes there are long exploratory journeys to be taken before we get to the next stop along the line - but, I still think the boys, at least, know where they're going. Sometimes we go by the scenic route, sometimes we get there on the express.

Then, maybe there are times when the guys aren't quite sure where they'll end up once they've started off. Somebody throws out a suggestion, somebody else picks it up,or throws back an alternative... 'Takes time, you pick a place to go...'and eventually we're roaring into the next station. So I reckon those are your teases, the band tossing ideas around, maybe even throwing favourite musical quotations at each other just for the hell of it.

Just my thoughts anyway.

I dunno, I would throw in a guess that a time I saw Jerry Garcia Band circa 1981 at The Stone in SF... he was doing ok, and I was just there to pick up a check or something, wasn't working that night... and suddenly, Jerry cut the crap and was playing a jam of Born Cross-Eyed... it turned my head around, it was magic for about a minute or more... and then it was gone again...

I wouldn't call St Stephen a tease - it's a great, roaring, sweeping epic of a song - it's got movements like a symphony.(You can guess it's one of my favourites.)

By the way CPW your attachments don't open for me - tantalised to know what they are.

What I'd like to hear are some examples of "sadistic" teasing - sounds interesting! So i'm listening to the other one just before that cosmic charlie right now. http://www.archive.org/details/gd94-02-27.aud.wankelsworth.12097.sbeok.shnf Try these renamed attachments - just some thumbnails of Dead book covers. It was hearing a classmates tape he made of a live Dead show, it was the opening notes to saint Stephen - that pulled me in for the first time... if I wasn't teased, then I was hooked right in on that wave... and went to my first live show the next chance i got... some 36 years ago. Miles Davis teased the aud that nite, for real! He'd play what to me sounded like, Blipperty bap flursh gastalt zipzap... and then he'd walk off the stage... and come back, for a minute... bizaoppow poosh blap wip woop clib clip... and off Miles would stalk again...

It was listening to side 2 of LiveDead (remember when albums had sides?)- the mighty Saint Stephen/The Eleven behemoth that hooked me forever and had me set on a road I'm still on more than 30 years later. I just loved the muscular riffing that went on for about two minutes before the vocals come in on The Eleven, sheer powerhousing magnificence with Billy sounding like he was nailing his kit to the floor. All that and a lot more besides!

Yeah, that side two was the clincher for me too!

I remember listening in the dark with headphones, after a puff of spinach, and the 2 minute intro to St. Stephen seemed to last for 20 minutes...

I'm a big Comes A Time guy and one of the MSG shows in the 1990 run with Hornsby the band comes out of PITB and it's there but they suddenly shift to Ship of fools. Since Ship of fools never was a real segue song I guessing Jer pulled the ripcord on the Comes A Time. Great show none-the-less

Of course I was being sarcastic about the boys being sadists, but they had to know that ALMOST playing "Cosmic Charlie" in '94 might very well enduce heart trauma. Thanks for your thoughts all, brilliant!

On 6/25/91 Garcia pulls out a wrenching (for me) "Rubin" tease just before settling on "Tennessee." Hearing one earlier in that tour made me want MORE...

Oh, and lobster12, "Comes a Time" came out of Space that night...I was sure it was a tease until the man stepped to the mic.

Funny, the gig I have has GDRFB>Stella>around and around after space. according to this site and setlist.com on 9/19/90 there is no performance of Comes a time. But if that's what you saw and heard more power to ya.

lobster12, I guess I wasn't as clear as I could've been: I was speaking of the "Comes a Time" from 6/25/91 (the one I linked), but I too was at that MSG show you mentioned and remember how close we got to hearing "Comes a Time." Finally hearing one on 6/25/91 was divine. Cheers.

no worries. When you said "out of space" during the Hornsby era I immediately thought of Bonner springs. Without looking, I'm guessing that's what you are referring to. And yes what a nice version. Great show to boot

3/13/82, Reno. Other One>Dear Prudence tease>Peter.
At the time, we were catching many JGB gigs at the various Keystones, and we were all SURE that they were going into Prudence. Check out the recording here and you can hear when the crowd recognizes it--and Jer immediately drops into Peter. Oh well, goes to show you can never tell.

My favorite tease is the St Stephen tease that occured between the Spanish Jam and NFA at the Rocks 7-28-82.
It was so tantalizing, and it seemed that Phil, at least, was ready willing and able, but alas it was not to be.
