Next Monday I hit the big 50. It’s a working day – so I guess I’ll have to work, at least in the daytime. However, since I work from home I can soundtrack the day as I please. So, I was wondering if you good people could help me out a little. I want to put together some choice listening for my birthday – maybe even burn a 3 CD compilation album of mighty moments as a little present to myself. What do you suggest I include on it? I look forward to hearing your ideas.

robthewordsmith, JodyC, and "the lamper": Scorpio's, huh? -- oh, man, I think Johnny Cash's song, "Ring of Fire," is the anthem for Scorpio's! If you don't mind, may I offer an all-Jerry compilation for part of your day? As you are preparing your supplies-of-choice for the day/evening, begin with "Ring of Fire."
When settled-in: Mission in the Rain, Lonesome and a Long Way from Home, Waiting for a Miracle, After Midnight>Eleanor Riby>After Midnight, The Way You Do the Things You Do, Don't Let Go, Positively 4th Street, Tangled Up in Blue, Like a Road, Midnight Moonlight. Encore: Forever Young; 2nd Encore: The Maker

(One addition: if your life has been anything like mine, then "Get Out of My Life Woman" is inserted after "Tangled Up in Blue")

May the bonds that hold us together forever be stronger than the forces raging to pull us apart, --- AshesRising

"I fell into a burning ring of fire --
I went down, down, down
And the flames went higher,
And it burns, burn, burns,
The ring of fire, the ring of fire..." (Johnny Cash)

Thanks Ashes. I still have another year, but other than us all using our AARP cards for cheaper lodging when we see show, don't see the age thing getting in the way much. My only concern is am I positioned to enjoy the next 10-15 years of work before I can think about retiring. Not much of a career path where I am, but not sure if I can or would get back into a big corporate thing again. I need to find a successful friend who owns a company that needs someone he can trust to run it for him- and pay me ridiculously well to do so. Right.

AshesRising - Thank you for your good wishes. It's a funny thing but I feel a heartwarming sense of community with the people on the forum - people who in all likelihood I'll never meet, probably never put a face or even a real name to. I guess its all part of the Grateful Dead experience - the soundtrack to our lives.

Sone great suggestions on your playlist. Jerry doing Tangled Up in Blue is something I return to often - it's just magisterial. Did Jerry cover Ring of Fire? I'd love to hear it if he did. Could you maybe point me in the right direction?

An old Scots-Irish saying:
May the roof above us never fall in, and we here gathered beneath it never fall out.

Well, amazing this turned up! Wouldn't have known what to make of it if it weren't for BD getting involved...can't believe how people find these things...

What a great thread, from so long ago--just before I signed on too!

Happy up coming b-day, early, Rob!

It's great having you around here.

[And skies, you know what you can do...if not, ask around at Duke.]

Hello WT - have to say I was pretty bemused by good old bluedevil wishing me a happy 50th about three years too late! But it was good to revisit that old thread with Ashes, doc f. and Jody all present. Whatever happened to those guys? Jody and the doc pop up now and then but Ashes is very much MIA, alas.

Thank you for your good wishes!

Yeah, that pic of you and your daughter (right?) some yrs ago makes me think you continue to age well! And, yep--doc does show now and again, but not much news on Ashes for some time...damn, I certainly miss his input here!

Why not use the Browse by Year function to see what shows have been played on your b-day, and using what aud recordings are avaiable put together your own personal b-day mix.

Search over. First was 72, but there appears to be no song files. Then 78 Boston, and depending on which review e'd trust its either sucky or awesome. Couple mentions about the PeggyO being the best since Englishtown77. Thats it, xcept for a 87 stream only show. I guess the boys made a habit of packing up for a couple weeks around Thanksgiving. The 11/13/87 sounded pretty good, so if any well stocked readers have a copy in their possession, perhaps a trade is in the works? So, Plan B?

Duh, thats my birthday too! I'm a year behind, but maybe a little collaboration would help. I'll start looking for shows in 66, which is the first yr I think on the archive.

No - born in raised in Scotland, Jody.

I checked on DeadBase and the boys only did five November 13 shows
11-13-66 Avalon Ballroom, San Francisco, Ca.
11-13-70 46th Street Rock Palace, Brooklyn, N.Y.
11-13-72 Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hall, Kansas City
11-13-78 Boston Music Hall, Boston, Ma.
11-13-87 Long Beach Arena, Long Beach, Ca.

So maybe not too much to go on there...

A big tip of the kilts to ye Robbie me lad !! I also turned fifty earlier this year. No sweat. If you got your health and your sense of humor, well you're already ahead of the game.
Actually, I found the 40's to be rougher on most people, including me. Things seemed to turn around and smooth out once the 40's are over (divorces and job changes, etc.)
I'm pretty sure my paternal grandfather's roots came from Scotland. He was short, wiry with jet black hair and sky blue eyes. Always had a soft spot for Scotland, moreso than Ireland. I'm also a big bluegrass fan, and I believe those roots run in the same direction. The drone influence from the bagpipes - got translated into the dulcimer and the way
the vocal harmonies developed, the audioharp as well.
The Dark Star from 11/13/72 is worth getting - it's Owsley's audience tape, not too bad.
I know what I was doing on 11/13/72, heh, heh. How about you??

Good to hear from you Dr F! I reckon I'm still pretty hale and hearty approaching the half century and the humour is still there too if sometimes tinged with a touch of cynicism. I won't be too sorry to say goodbye to my forties - I made a few mistakes in that decade.

Have to say I'm a bluegrass fan myself - maybe it has something to do with the musical inheritance, or maybe its because I just relate to the description I once heard of bluegrass as total misery at breakneck speed!

I'll be sure to check out the 11/13/72 Dark Star - thanks for the pointer. I'm currently downloading and very much enjoying another November show - 11/17/73 at the Pauly Pavilion. Haven't heard it all yet but its shaping up nicely - an attention-grabbing China Cat jam and a very sweet and tender Row Jimmy among the highlights so far. Even the blessed Donna appears to be having a good night!

Thanks for the good wishes, Doc. Much appreciated.

My favorite comment this year about turning fifty came from a friend of mine, also the same age. His quote -
"My wife and I used to put on "Live Dead", get stoned and F@*&. Now, we play it while we're painting the kitchen!"

Hey Rob, I'm also going to be fifty next week - thursday the 16th. Right now I feel pretty bummed about it, but I'm sure we'll get through it. 11-14-73 was a great show.

Rob - I'm not sure how I feel about the whole thing right now. I guess I'm going to spend the day with a big stack of Dead, Jerry and Phil discs, maybe a few other things, and spin my way through the day.

All the best to you on your day too!
