The Grateful Dead are possibly the most misunderstood group in popular music history - The fans devotion to the group began to reach a point where casual audiences felt it to be a cult, or "the Grateful Dead thing". Anytime there's that much fervor, people outside the circle scratch their heads and don't "get it". 80,000,000 Germans can't be wrong! But they were. The same thing happened when Elvis had as many fans. (A backlash, sort of) But nearly everyone loved the Beatles... their music was innovative, not merely well played. Back in 1970, my Father, who loved Beatles music, especially Sgt. Pepper's on up, and he loved Hank Williams and Latin music... he said then that all the Grateful Dead music sounded the same. He also said all the Hare Krishnas looked alike!

Yea. The Dead was, and still is, quite a phenomenon. I sometimes wonder if a single band will ever do that again. It seems to me like the Dead sparked a musical movement, AKA the "jamband" scene, that is at its strongest now, but it's not with a single band; rather it's dispersed with 50 or so bands who all have very similar communities as each other as well as with the Dead.

I showed an academic counselor that I work nextdoor from the 5-8-77 fire, and he said "I thought the grateful dead was like.. psychedelic music" :)

a typical reaction in Canada during the 80's was, "good grief, another band that hasn't played since the 60's doing a re-union tour"

where do you even start to explain?

LOL

you're scope may very well be too narrow

Siberia, Norway or Greenland may very well be closer to the point of origin, besides, the further north you are, the closer other nations are via the north pole (over the top) and the less useful compasses are...but you know there is still a noonday sun so latitude may not be such a factor, unless of course i provided false info to throw everyone off...sometimes communication errors also inadvertently occur when translating from Trafalmadorian...ooops!

btw cream-puff-war, all Hari Krishna's do look alike and sing off key...uh oh, here comes the "how dare you bash the greatest spiritualist musician's in the world posts"...maybe someone will confuse direwolfe as the original poster so i won't have to answer for it

hey midnight sun,

yeah, all Hare Krishnas look alike.

They sound as you say, but remember the Apple LP they put out, produced by George Harrison? All off-key, except maybe track one, side one -

oh, and they had this one Krishna dude who could actually sing - you can hear some of his demos from the '70s here on LMA

http://www.archive.org/details/HHVisnujanaSwamiNectarofDevotion

where the tagline reads, many claim he was the best singer...

not sure if anyone will bother checking this out.

Hey, I used to go see a really good local group called Midnight Sun. They played on Haight St.in the '70s. Any relation?

HH Visnujana Swami and the chipmunks, not quite as good as Alvin's ensemble, but close (i can't believe i actually checked that out) and to show i'm not all negative, he is the best Hare Krishna singer i've heard so far

no, i ripped the name "midnight sun" from a half a dozen or so local businesses...there's a clue for high flow, how many towns in the arctic (or antartic) could possibly have businesses with that name?

I swallowed my pride recently and contacted ISKCON,
in hopes they would have tapes of this seminal event at the Avalon Ballroom with their guru and the good ol' Grateful Dead:

see attatchment.

Strange bedfellows!

midnight sun -

ISKCON didn't get back to me, but it would be worth someone's time to try again.
I emailed one of their tape/cd/dvd outlets, and posted an inquiry about the event on their bulletin board in the '60s thread.

Guessing from the Bhaktivedanta archives posted on LMA, they taped quite a lot of the 1966-1967 era.

Whether they saved the whole show, it's possible though the rock portion wouldn't have been circulated among themselves.

Perhaps it sits on a reel, buried in their tape vaults.

They do have tapes (and free d/l) of Swami Bhaktivedanta meeting with The Beatles; and they sell a collection of George Harrison stuff.

This is a research project for someone who really loves the young Dead... I hope someone tries and succeeds.
Money might motivate them to search.

I read somewhere that the Krishnas sometimes brought food backstage to Grateful Dead shows...

Maybe they never forgot the Dead's generosity in helping put on the benefit that got them their 2nd temple in America.

Hmmmmm, no I doubt that. I think my 1st guess was too close for comfort...

the only two dead songs Q107 ever played were the album cuts of truckin' and casey jones. nice enough tunes, but not enough to inspire one to run away and join the circus. then i went to buffalo in 89 and haven't been back since. ian
