First off, let me start with this warning for the "sensitive" folks out there: this post is not directly related to the Dead, so if you insist on Dead-Only material, skip this and move on to the next entry of "Was Jerry a boxer or brief man?". Now that's out of the way, my question this morning (good morning all, by the way, I hope everyone is feeling refreshed after Dire got unloaded on yesterday...damn, so he honestly let's us know what he's thinking, who are we to judge? If only everyone was so truthful)...where the hell was I? Oh, yeah, question. Everyone look on your iPod, or current play list, or CD collection, or hard drive, or where ever you store all your music: which artist or album stands out the most as one that would make an outside observer say "What the hell is this doing here? I never would have guessed this from a Head" For me, it may be "Violator" by Depeche Mode. I can't help it, ever since the days of drunken dance parties at school, it always struck a nerve and I still love cranking it on rare occasions. Another candidate could be "Fair Warning" by Van Halen. I must say that back in the late seventies-very early eighties, I thought they were ok and this album still resonates with me to this day. Or another could be, as I've mentioned earlier, would be my selection of Queensryche's first few albums. These get me in a Pink Floyd kind of way. Anyone else want to admit something? Now is your chance to come clean and fess up, for we don't judge here....well, not much anyway.

great topic!

NOt sure if I can narrow it down though. I don't have my collection in front of me so just off the top of my head:

Fair Warning - great album just listened to it last week as a matter of fact.

Herb Albert - 4 sider

Alice and Chains - unplugged

Be Bop Deluxe - mixed tape a friend made ( is that cheating? not being a CD? )

Neil Diamond - classics ( early stuff )

DaDa - Puzzle

Chris Isaak - SF Days

Carole King - tapestry

Led Zeppelin - don't think they'd be out of place. My favorite band in hiogh school, go burned out for years, can now appreciate them again

Minus Five - great pop songwriting by a guy from the band " fine fresh fellows" surrounded by Peter Buck ( REM ) and an assorted cast of characters that changes from album to album ( including JEff Tweedy and other members of WILCO ). I recommend the album " Down With Wilco"

Squeeze - Singles

Van Halen - Fair Warning

Pete Zorn - the one with life on a train, great album

There's a bunch more I'm sure.

Hi Johnny - You and me agree in the strangest of ways. Sqeeze - Singles is a guilty pleasure of mine too. I have many...

Ice T - Power(as good as any episode of Sopranos)
Eric B. and Rakim - Paid in Full(Have I lost the geezers yet?)
Miles and Quincy at Montreaux
The Wiggles - Let's Wiggle(real gangster music!)

I have a bunch of Miles. I didn't include him because he is a musical genious that belongs in ANY fan of music collection. In fact I didn't include any of my Jazz or Folk.

Here are a couple of other ecclectic ones I just thought of Paul Robeson - Songs of America

Those Darn Accordians - Squeeze this ( promo )

And anyone ever heard this one:

Luther and the Wrights - Rebuild the Wall. It's an all Country and Bluegrass ( done with tongue n cheek ) version of Pink Floyd's the Wall. Just when I thought I could never listen to that album again... it's GREAT.

Had a chance to see Miles at my school (engineering school, but the Arts dept. brought in some top notch performers: Pat Metheny, Miles, Chick Corea, Spyro Gyra to name a few, all of whom I was, as a friend once put it, close enough to spit on. Never did of course). At that point in his carreer, Miles was one interesting dude to see live; dressed in mulitcolored tinfoil and with enough jerry curl to coat the Titanic. Of course he spent the entire show with his back to the audience, but, Holy Shit, could the man play.

How could I leave out The Dropkick Murphys. Kind of Punk meet Irish Folk music right out of Boston. You might recognize them if you've seen "Fever Pitch". Their version of the song "Tessie" (originally goes back to 1903 and was supposedly sung by a group of hardcore Red Sox fans and helped the Sox come back from a 3 games to 1 deficit to beat the Pittsburgh Pirates and win the Series that year) was featured at the conclusion of the movie.

To be honest, I'm not really sure who is sending what as far as JJ goes. I am totally and utterly confused. Between tigerbot, johnnyonthespot, and you (i think all three of you are in on this), my mind has gone haywire. I'm not used to three people being so kind all at once as to opening my ears to some "new-to-me" music. If I get doubled up on anything - I'll reoffer back out on the LMA.

As far as Harbour Lights - my ex has my copy and she loves the cd. If you literally have an extra that no one else wants, sure I'll take it, but i don't want to be greedy. That is a great disc. Thank you very much for that offer - but if you know of anyone else more in need - please offer to them first.

No need to go private, may have piqued others' curiosity as well...

I was driving to work on the 101 freeway on 11/30/04 about 3 in the afternoon. Blacked out behind the wheel at 70+ mph, went across two lanes of traffic, rolled across an on ramp and ended up halfway up the freeway embankment looking back the way I just came! Didn't have a scratch on me! Well
, I did get a little nick on my pinkie finger digging my phone out of the broken glass between the seat and door.Almost a whole drop of blood! EMT's insisted I take an ambulance ride though, got xrayed from head to toe, no damage,ER Doc & nurse said I was going to be sore as hell for a week or so and that never happened either! Felt fine the next day! No one else was hurt either and I only barely clipped one other vehicle! Wish there was film, witnesses said it was pretty spectacular.

Superstitious? Me? Yeah a little, something about the 30th of the "1" (january & november) months. On 1/30/ 03 I had a ladder go out from under me, fell about 10 feet onto the ladder and hardwood floor and got out of that one with only a broken (not badly either) arm! I don't work or do anything on that day either! Both true stories, I was there!

"Blackest Album" a mix of jay's black and Metallica's black. I know there are more but these are some of my favs.

speaking of guilty pleasure - STEELY DAN is without a doubt one of my all time favorites. I generally don't like my music overly polished but man there's just something about their prescision and tightness mixed with all these happy poppy pretty melodies singing about things that aren't clean at all - sex and drugs baby! All sorts or under belly stuff. The older I get the harder it is for me to find people that truly appreciate this band. Some down right hate them. One dude on the Dead Net site even said any dude that listens to them is gay which I found strange considering I'm not. Now if it was ABBA or show tunes I could see but why Steely Dan?

Of course, all Deadheads should have a special affection for Elvis. I've mentioned it before, but his "The River in Reverse" with Allen Touissant is great. I saw the tour and they killed.

And I've always loved Joe - although the does like to berate the audience. The Night and Day tour slayed. Broken English was also a good tour.

Both of those guys were labelled, by the music industry, as angry young men of "New Wave" who went on to cover, without a hint of irony, country, standards, Cole Porter, record with orchestras, etc.

As a Californian, I've always liked San Andreas Fault by Natalie Merchant. Among others of hers.

I have Best of J. Geils Band.....that's pretty whatever...

Nothing wrong with Magic Dick on the blues harp! I SAW J. Geils at Hofstra College, Long Island back in the seventies. As I recall, Peter Wolf was wearing a black dress that night.
He had great legs...

If you root deep into my Ipod you'll find these guilty pleasures:

Rod Stewart, Every Picture Tells a Story
Death Cab for Cutie in concert (lama download)

I caught Geils at the North Atlantic Blues Festival last summer. The boy can shred once you cut 'em away from courting pop radio, which he doesn't do and didn't that day. RRIIIIP!

I just had to break out Tigerlily because of your post...and seriously, thanx as it would probably have been a few more months before it saw daylight. I hear you on the Best of J. Geils--but did you ever hear their earlier blues stuff? Some of that was definitely do-able, but "Centerfold," etc. pretty much left me bored when they came out.

Oh, I definitely got your Geils album beat: The Best of Vixen.

Human Nature- Michael Jackson. I dont care what anyone says about me- this song rocks, and Miles did a version of it in the 80s w/ Scofield.

Perhaps only the old timers will choke, gag and bar me from posting, but believe or not, I can listen to...The Monkees.

Hey, if they could get Neil Diamond to write their biggest "hit" (Last Train to Clarksville), who are we to laugh?

No to memtion "Hey hey we're the Monkees" and "I'm a Believer"...

and btw, Neil Diamond is my "guilty pleasure", but i'm not sure I would even list it as guilty.

I say this without the slightest trace of "wink-wink" or even "nudge-nudge"---- HOT AUGUST NIGHT is one of THE greatest live rock albums EVER.

Shine on, you crazy (Neil) Diamond!

I grew up with my Mom listening to Neil Diamond. His music holds a spot in my heart and on my iPod. If you get a chance check out Super Diamond. He is to Neil Diamond what Dark Star Orchestra is to the Dead. Puts on a great performance. Took my Mom to a Super Diamond show a couple years ago and she loved it...that was the true test.

I have all of their albums and lots of their MP3s.

I guess only because I watched to TV show when it first came out on Monday Nights. I was probable 7 or 8.

Their later stuff can get pretty trippy.

You are not alone - it will be interesting to see what Michael Stipe says upon induction into the ROR HOF.
