not a fan favorite, but I like the song...it debuted in 1982 at the Creamery Benefit show in fact (08-28-1982)...started out with some different lyrics and the band took time to develop the signature groove of the song...check out these versions if you dare, but be careful, the band totally sucked after 1977...

07-19-1989 Alpine Valley - great sounding boards abound of this run, check out the entire 07-17-19-1989 Alpine run if you haven't already...Garcia rips it up for this one...great use of a repeating lick motif in Jerry's solo that he shreds into double stop city...

06-25-1985 I want to say Cuyahoga Falls as the venue locale, nice fat sounding version with an obligatory Garcia chocking on pudding moment...

03-27-1985 Nassau Coliseum tight

12-31-1988 Oakland Coliseum w/ Mick Taylor (great blues guitarist best known for being a member of the Rolling Stones during arguably their best run of albums "Exile on Main Steet, Sticky Fingers...)

03-22-1990 Copp Arena well played...great show, by the way...Scarlet>Fire (featured on the So Many Roads release)

I always thought this was an very underrated first set song. The atmosphereic lyrics about the mob and the shady side of L.A. offered a nice contrast to their more standard fare.

Hampton 4/13/84 is a pretty nasty version.

I always loved that song in the first set. Come on, how many bands use "copasetic" in a song? I always thought the line "Little red light on the highway, Big green light on the speedway (which I'll swear I heard Jerry sing as freeway)" spoke volumes. As Lowell George sang, "just throw me a line".

Great call on 7-9-89 Strat! Excellent version, rips me everytime. I caught a few great ones at the Oakland Colliseum but can't remember the dates. I like the raunchy seedy feel of the tunes. I've heard that people thought it was about Belushi. If it wasn't for the fact the song was written before Belushi died it sounds like it could have.

Didn't Belushi die in Feb or March of '82? Busted out in Veneta Aug '82... maybe it doesn't predate his passing. I always thought that was a direct reference to JB.

A reference to the Chateau Marmont, the hotel on Sunset Strip in Los Angeles where John Belushi died on March 5, 1982. The entire song could be taken as being about Belushi's death, but as usual, Hunter throws in some curve balls, skewing the character of the song so that it becomes someone else.

Hey Strat- since your here can I ask another question/(by the way, I do like the funky beat of West La, although many don't like it at all). I looked on deadlists for a song named She Belongs to Me that was on a mix I got from someone here. Deadlists song page was disabled, so I got nowhere. Nice tune, sounds a bit Dylan-y. Anything?

check out 11-01-1985, 09-15-1985 for She Belongs to Me...they did it a few times in 1985... it is Dylan...mid early 60s tune he did acoustic

6-15-85 ( of she belongs to me )is the version I remember most probably due to the availability and quality. The song is on Bringing it back home, also the same album that has Baby Blue and one of my all time favorite Dylan tunes: It's Alright Ma I'm only Bleeding.

This tune was a major force and craved for by end of 85. I was blown away at the 11/1 show but another GREAT version blew me away a week later in Rochester 11/8. The show doesn't stand up to 11/1 as a whole but that She Belongs is just wonderful.

Said it before and will say it again.... for the life of me I don't understand how they dropped this tune. They kept Queen jane forever but SBTM can't make the cut? i love this cover and even though it works in the post space slot, it could be first set or pre drums as well. Missed opportunity for the boys in my opinion.

Jerry, Bob and Phil did an acoustic version of it on the 'Backstage Pass' videotape. Bob and Jerry trade off verses. Jerry looks and sounds pretty beat in the thing, but it's a great version of a really cool tune.
