ive came to the conclusion that jack straw may be the dead's greatest songs. (huge generalization, but every week i regard another song as the deads best) I have a few good versions of jack straw, most particularly is dick picks 34, very good. (yes im a dicks picks fan). Can someone post their favorite version, im looking for nice intense long jammy versions.

How about 2/9/73, mid-second set.
Naturally 8/27/72.

But Jack Straw isn't really a jam vehicle.

Cliff likes the versions where Jerry correctly sings "Shannons" verses, and Bobby those of "Jack".

Cliff had a great bottle of wine and just sparked up something that was imported! Streaming 11/2/69 right now.

Actually thinking of streaming 10/27/79 next, but I'm not sure if I can do it?

Do my eyes deceive me? Is Cliff aware he has admitted even considering streaming a show performed after 77?. But if Cliff is going to do so, he can't go wrong with either of those shows.

Excellent. Perfect blend of satire and fact. Still laughing. I think it was the random "shop til I drop" comment that was the capper, don't know where it came from or why, but just happy it was there.

Come on, Cliffy, it really is okay to like stuff that came along after the Jimmy Carter years. Don't feel embarrassed or ashamed.

hey johnny, odd question 1) how far are you from the spot where chris mccandless died? 2) have you ever made the 'pilgrimage' to his bus? i read 'into the wild' sometime ago. good book, but it's that peacful, ignorance is bliss photo of him leaning against that bus that left an impression with me. maybe because i was of the same age, bumming around the bc wilderness between tours and wintering in the mountains that i'm so struck. there but for the grace of.. type thing. don't know. is he folk legend up in your neck of the woods? seems like there's a song in there... ian

I'm about 150 miles south of Denali Park which up here ( just like Canada I bet ) is considered close : )

I've been in the park but not specifically to that spot. He's considered the opposite of any kind of folk hero up here, he's considered an idiot. Alaskans tend to be very harsh on people who go into the wilderness unprepared which is exactly what he did. I'm not an outdoorsy person myself ( except for my back deck ) but I know enough to respect it. Seriously, up here you need to prepare for weather changes and encounters with wildlife.

nasty spot man - look it up - one of the worst in southern Alaska - a worse climb than denali in many ways - partly because of the knife edge ridge and northern exposure route and another - no plane/copter ride in - gotta hike through the glacier field - nasty shit. no true route up except the SE and that aint too cool due to the sun loosining up the 1/2 inch ice sheet on the 1/2 mile vertical face - couldn't pay me to do that one - Krakauer did it though. That man is the BALLS!!!!

Check out Giants Stadium 7/9/89; it follows a SCORCHING Shakedown Street opener! The drummers propel Jack into the stratosphere during the "jam" section and I have never heard Bob sing the "Jack Straw from Wichata" line with such conviction. It is available as an excellent AKG414 DFOB recording here (I have never seen a SBD).

the jack straw from the "go to nassau" cd is amazing...probably my favorite (phil drops some bombs right after the "jack straw form witchata cut his buddy down"). i'm more of a post '77 fan when it comes to jack straw. they play it very well in 1990....9/19/90 Madison Square Garden = huge highlight/great show starter. Personally, i think jack straw from '73 or any pre hiatus are very lame...there's nothing really that great about them. They kinda pick it up in '77 though, but it's not until Brent comes on board where it really turns into a 1st set opener that rocks hard and gets everybody in the mood. It's definately one of those songs that you use if you are trying to guess a year/date of a particular show because of how differently they play it throughout different years.

The Jack Straw on 1/11/79 has the fastest playing I think I've ever heard Jerry play. If you haven't heard this version, please give it a try and let me know what you think. Even though Bob cuts him off at the end of his solo, it's still one of the best.

78 & early 79 Jack Straw's are great. Check out 1.7.79 to open the show for their first performance at MSG. Bobby's lyrical conviction is strong and Garcia simply tears it up on his guitar.

My current favorite has to be 8/27/83 in Seattle, which is also one of my favorite first sets as a whole. Each song, even Looks Like Rain, is exceptionally well played.
