It would be advisable to study copyright law before making pronouncements. Colorization appears to effect the status of the item.

I've studied copyright law extensively, The US copyright office accepts copyright applications for colorized movies because such works fulfill the requirement of originality. But even if the underlying work is PD the colorized version represents a derivative work that can have its own copyright. And colorizing a copyrighted work doesn't give you rights to the underlying film.
