Broadway Joe earned his exemption...he was the first "cool" footballer...I know, I know, BUT nonetheless. He was amazing in his prime. He and Marino have to qualify as the two best passers of all time. Sure, their were "winners" (Montana, Bradshaw, Brady), but nobody surpassed those two in terms of passing the ball under pressure.

hey William, the discs arrived x-mass eve via reindeer, but no time to transfer to my i-pod before embarking on an extended leave of absence to the south...eventually gave up trying to convince 2 people approaching their 90's on the impending need for connectivity (but who the fuck am i to say, he still earns the bulk of their income composing, orchestrating, and yes even performing music while she still manages to maintain the household) was also amazed at how many people i know my own age that have to survived this world unconnected...

so i tried the local big city library, but the kiosk timed out by the time i logged on...at one point i must have been in the wayback machine or something because Diana Hamilton's name showed up...ya, like she is going to offer to resume the thankless task of keeping this insanity in order...a fate worse than death

but those are not the real reasons for my delayed confirmation of reception...rather than just saying "thanks again", i was planning on listening to the shows you sent and posting reviews...i now realize that this may take some time as i may need to further investigate this era by listening to the shows surrounding these shows so i have something to compare with

absolutely love Jer's sound (Les Paul?), especially his reliance on the double coil neck pickup (extra thick and rich!)...by contrast, Irwin's "Tiger" had a single coil in this position, which he rarely went to if i am not mistaken, for the most part relying on the sharper sounding middle pickup during the 80's, IMO a sound that was more utilitarian, allowing him to cut through the clutter of the 80's stage mix at the sacrifice of pathos

also, really digging the wide open instrumentation, Phil and Jerry duet, lots of room for the drummers with only Bob adding harmonic fabric to the fray(can't recall hearing Pig on my only passing of 10/12/68 ???)...i don't know why they felt the impending need to add TC, or for that matter any of the subsequent keyboardists, but maybe that's just me

will be interesting to discover just how much the musicianship and performances varied from show to show at this early juncture compared with the delivery of the far more expanded repertoire of the 80's

so far, i am pleasantly surprised with the "tuning", (although the vocals on New Potato, one of my favs, did cause some uncontrollable grimacing) and the jams throughout are very relaxed...

i've already said too much (sorry about the long post) time for some serious listening...i don't think i would have ventured this far back without your introduction...perhaps someday it will be Cream-Puff-War's 66 picks

more brandy and cigars later

That is ALL music to my ears, so fret not over the long post. And yes, you are right--fall of 68 was the time they "fired" Bob & PP, though it didn't stick, it did result in the Matrix shows sans both of them, and then the incredible Avalon shows, with Bob but no PP. I think it proves that Bob really added something, but, eh...less so for PP. Nonetheless, I do maintain that Dec 68 thru all of 69 shows what TC brought to the equation...like his keyboard work on DS, Eleven and StSt especially. But to each his own.

Just so glad they made it. Note that there may be some annoying "clicks" on my all time fav OOne from 12-29-68; Arb has confirmed that these originate with the CMiller versions, and were not some failing or corruption on my part (shudder the thought...). In any case, you can see for yourself (hear that is) and always get the MP3 track six to replace the one WAV track you now possess for that show...but that is getting way ahead of ourselves.

Enjoy. Greatly appreciate the detailed musical analysis.

didn't know that they actually played some shows with only Jer, Phil and drummists (my computer tells me that "drummist" is not a word...interesting...it did however suggest "drum mist" as a viability)
gotta check this out, looks like 10/8/68 > 10/10/68 ???

always been a believer in substituting guitar in place of piano/keyboards, even for big band jazz...no, the guitar cannot physically accomplish the same voicings as piano, but the guitar does cultivate "economy" (of the number of notes), and to this extent Weir succeeds admirably...to me, it seems when both comping guitar and keyboards are added together that neither does as well as they would have if afforded the task individually...more listening on my part may very well convince me otherwise

Right; 10-8, 10-10, 10-??, 12-16?...unable to look them all up, but in Oct & Dec of 68 there are perhaps five Matrix shows without Bob/PP (though some have E Bishop, and a few others sitting in, if I recall).

The "Hart (Heart) Beats" shows.

Have to say, you certainly know what you are talking about musical analysis wise; greatly appreciate the insights. The boys provided a great deal of variation on sound over the years (ie, changing personnel, equipment, song style, etc., etc.).

Cool.

I'd watch out with all this non dead stuff, someone might change the subject and post a link to some obscure soundboard from 25 years ago and think they are cool.

No really, you do have to watch what you say or the archive police will shut you down. Look what happened to Tito... speaking of Patriots fans, and sore losers. I mean really, what happened to freedom of speech? You would think of all people deadheads would find it reprehensible to silence someone from voicing their point of view in a public forum. I must say the form was more entertaining when Tito was around, although that guy stole my material nonstop.

I don't know if they are sore losers as much as in a state of shock. Some are suffering from foot-in-mouth disease. They gave lip service to the hope for a good game schtick, but didn't really believe it. They expected a blowout. The Giants knew that if they blew out the Pats, that would be bad for ratings. I guess that nobody's perfect!! Nyah, nyah.
