so i tried the local big city library, but the kiosk timed out by the time i logged on...at one point i must have been in the wayback machine or something because Diana Hamilton's name showed up...ya, like she is going to offer to resume the thankless task of keeping this insanity in order...a fate worse than death
but those are not the real reasons for my delayed confirmation of reception...rather than just saying "thanks again", i was planning on listening to the shows you sent and posting reviews...i now realize that this may take some time as i may need to further investigate this era by listening to the shows surrounding these shows so i have something to compare with
absolutely love Jer's sound (Les Paul?), especially his reliance on the double coil neck pickup (extra thick and rich!)...by contrast, Irwin's "Tiger" had a single coil in this position, which he rarely went to if i am not mistaken, for the most part relying on the sharper sounding middle pickup during the 80's, IMO a sound that was more utilitarian, allowing him to cut through the clutter of the 80's stage mix at the sacrifice of pathos
also, really digging the wide open instrumentation, Phil and Jerry duet, lots of room for the drummers with only Bob adding harmonic fabric to the fray(can't recall hearing Pig on my only passing of 10/12/68 ???)...i don't know why they felt the impending need to add TC, or for that matter any of the subsequent keyboardists, but maybe that's just me
will be interesting to discover just how much the musicianship and performances varied from show to show at this early juncture compared with the delivery of the far more expanded repertoire of the 80's
so far, i am pleasantly surprised with the "tuning", (although the vocals on New Potato, one of my favs, did cause some uncontrollable grimacing) and the jams throughout are very relaxed...
i've already said too much (sorry about the long post) time for some serious listening...i don't think i would have ventured this far back without your introduction...perhaps someday it will be Cream-Puff-War's 66 picks
more brandy and cigars later

Just so glad they made it. Note that there may be some annoying "clicks" on my all time fav OOne from 12-29-68; Arb has confirmed that these originate with the CMiller versions, and were not some failing or corruption on my part (shudder the thought...). In any case, you can see for yourself (hear that is) and always get the MP3 track six to replace the one WAV track you now possess for that show...but that is getting way ahead of ourselves.
Enjoy. Greatly appreciate the detailed musical analysis.

gotta check this out, looks like 10/8/68 > 10/10/68 ???
always been a believer in substituting guitar in place of piano/keyboards, even for big band jazz...no, the guitar cannot physically accomplish the same voicings as piano, but the guitar does cultivate "economy" (of the number of notes), and to this extent Weir succeeds admirably...to me, it seems when both comping guitar and keyboards are added together that neither does as well as they would have if afforded the task individually...more listening on my part may very well convince me otherwise

The "Hart (Heart) Beats" shows.
Have to say, you certainly know what you are talking about musical analysis wise; greatly appreciate the insights. The boys provided a great deal of variation on sound over the years (ie, changing personnel, equipment, song style, etc., etc.).
Cool.
