7-18-1976 SF Orpheum is a monster, as is 3-09-1981 MSG, which is sadly cut a little short by Mr. Weir and his infernal "Good Lovin'"

I will second that 7/18/76 emotion! The guitar solo on this song is among my all time favorites, and this Stella is my favorite ever played. Check it out!

Please listen to Old NJ head Zimmer and check out 10-21-78. I have heard many a Stella and what Jerry does at the end of this version has no equal. I would also throw your attention this way to a beautiful, quiet version that gets over looked as part of a show famous for other reasons i.e. the Ravenspace show of 4/19/82. This Stella is gorgeous perfection...but if you want a powerful jaw dropping ending you must check out 10/21/78. http://www.archive.org/details/gd1982-04-19.mtx.tobin.89314.sbeok.flac16 http://www.archive.org/details/gd1978-10-21.sbd.miller.89721.sbeok.flac16

My all time Favorite is 9-19-90...I get chills during Garcia's ending solo as it rises and rises..maybe being there
under special circumstances helped...but that is my all time
favorite...preceeded by my favorite GDTRFB and followed by a nice Around and Around.

a nice lead off to what was to come the following night.

Many a night I've drifted off to sleep after a crazy night with that one playing on my Ipod..only to wake up and start it again...in fact...I gotta dig it out now. I only saw the 19th and 20th of that run but man oh man what a time.

Totally unrelated to anything, but I was at two of these (July, 76, and Oct, 78). Sorry, I never listen to them now...what a waste, I know.

I always wondered why I felt lost at these shows...I thought at the time I had been "transported" but I assumed that was the altered state...

There are some great shows already mentioned here but since you mention spine tingling endings, this http://www.archive.org/details/gd90-06-17.sbd.ladner.10062.sbeok.shnf ,SB is pure unadulterated end solo tingle. You can practically bottle it. Have fun

How can anyone discuss Stella without mentioning 10-21-78
It was just released on Road Trips - If you want to hear an absolute killer - seek it out - maybe there is an aud version on here to listen to?

well as obvious as it sounds - what about the one from the Dead movie/Winterland 10/74? CLASSIC example of something I remember reading that Jerry said about ending a soung as quiet as a pin drop or something to that effect.

"when it's played right, that song has a perfect moment of silence in it" not sure if that's the quote you were thinking of, but I always loved that one.

I don't think that's the quote but that's a good one. The one I was thinking of was someone else quoting Jerry saying about a song that quietly.
