Forum: feature_films Subject: Re: How do you know if a feature film infringes copyright?

If a movie was released in the U.S. before 1964, and it has been in Feature Films for 10 years, and nobody has posted a copyright renewal for it, it's probably in the public domain.

U.S. films released before 1964 were initially given copyrights that only lasted 28 years. If the copyright wasn't renewed before it expired, the movie lost its copyright status.

If you see a modern film such as Breaking Away here, it's almost certainly protected by copyright.

If a pre-1964 film is sold by Mill Creek (in a 50-movie pack) or by Alpha Video, it's probably p.d.
