Interestingly, some reviewers are having "discussions" via the reviews--ie, attacks and counter attacks, just as we do here.
I am intrigued by the fact that so many of us Forumites rarely post reviews, and by how many reviewers never seem to post here...that latter fact especially surprising, it seems to me, given that they so obviously enjoy the back and forth, etc. Dr Flback seems the one exception, that at least historically, was a diehard reviewer that came to the Forum once in a while...not many of those, though...
Anybody else struck by this?

I'm guilty of posting hardly any reviews - I guess partly because it's time-consuming and unrewarding. But if you think about which posts are seen more and longer, obviously, if you say something in a show review, people will be seeing it for perhaps years to come - say it here in the forum, only a few people read it, & folks in the future can only find it accidentally.
Which is just due to the lousy way the Archive's set this up. I'm sure at the start, this forum was thought of as just a little messageboard for fan-chatter & random browsing - which it is - but over time, it's also become its own archive of Dead discussions - you have to be quite the dedicated searcher, though, to find them.

Personally, I've reviewed plenty of shows at DH and thought about posting over here in the reviews but then I found myself wording the reviews in the mores of the Review section (How can you say it's only a 2!? ; What do you mean you can't hear Jerry? ; JaguarBoy sure doesn't know his shit from shinola) you know, that sort of thing. Then I thought that the people who I would be writing for already have an opinion and probably would read it anyway as has been stated in replies to this post already.
I like that they are separate like the way the back-of-the-house crew at a restaurant is a different and always at odds with the wait staff and bartenders. It keeps a palpable tension that keeps the place together that might not be as great as its parts.
(Oh, and thanks for the snub in your response to your own post!) :P

My bad...see my explanation below if you care...if I worked at it, such obvious screwups would not occur, but you gotta understand it's just fun and games, and errors of this sort absolutely predicted by the methodology (originally developed so you can memorize the names of all your students when teaching classes of over 100 students at University...works pretty well, but there, when you screwup, as long as the correct student responds somewhere in the class, you don't look bad since it just appears you were gazing in the wrong direction...esp if that is toward the attractive young coed with tootsie pop in hand).

But over here in the forum we have something of a community. I know that if I ask a question, I'll get an intelligent answer (mixed in there somewhere among all the sarcasm); probably several. And while I don't know anyone personally, much less go fishing with one of you or live in the same town, I feel like I know a lot of you to some degree. That doesn't usually happen in the series of reviews.
I agree with Monte(?) who said above that this is a great experiment in democracy, like Craigslist. In my day job, I'm a digital librarian -- I try to turn a great research library inside out so people can learn whatever they want. There are a lot of good models, but the Archive is in a class by itself. Collections, reviews, user submissions, forum, downloads -- exactly what the Web should be about.

Now, you think I am making this up? Seriously--you were "in" as an abbreviation--"DM" and I know this because I have to go back to a previous time I did it (ie, I cheat) because the little memory trick only works with recent interactions, and I used by "letter D" for the likes of Death/mercy, Dire and so on, and then thought they had been covered, but the "DM" for "death and mercy" that I had interacted with, "REPLACED" your "DM" in my little memory list...
Does that make sense? So, it was a mistake, as I mentioned, because you were there six months ago, but yesterday couldn't be recalled because you were replaced by a DM poster I had interacted with more recently...
Sorry, but otherwise, I would have to actually WORK at this and it wouldn't be "fun"...

"I love the moment in "Cassidy" where they head out to the unknown hoping to collectively gather at 'Graceland.' Kudos to Jim Ladd for perfectly seguing Dire Straitsian outro music right into Simon's set sailing southbound. Everyone's paying attention, but the decibal level's only at 7.5." -jboy

Witness, EG, the absolutely great series of discussions of the latest RTrips...I think that many of us gained in that exchange given the long standing relationships that had been established prior to our heartfelt exchange over this newly released material. Just wouldn't have played out that way if we were a bunch of anonymous reviewers.
In a way, this was the underlying motivation of my post. The reviews are generally isolated commentaries that you can't place in any sort of context for the individual. Here, however, the history of each and every poster, at least most of them anyhow, greatly enhances the information provided while kicking around new material or a new take on old material. You just don't get that from the reviews, IMHO.
Hmmm, almost gushing there...distressing to some no doubt, but you probably all just roll your eyes and say "poor old sentimental Tell...it's pathetic he doesn't have a real life...but maybe I'll listen to 6-14 and post something about it just so he doesn't need to take another physical therapy session for his broken down back"...or maybe you just ignore it, but either way the background probably helped you decide.
In spite of all our differences over the years here GC, as just one small example, I can safely say that we share a great deal of our "outlook" on the world at large, both somewhat cynical/realistic bleeding hearts (in a good way), etc., etc., and it helps me understand your position on all sorts of issues, music and otherwise.
Jeezzz, I think I am even boring myself now...

Largely, WT, I agree. Over the years (jeez, that's crazy) we regulars have all come to have recognizable personalities and it does make for more engaged discussion/ranting/what have you.
But in your example of the Rtrips posts, I would say that DOES fit in w/the larger discussion of 'what's the best version of Row Jimmy', etc.. b/c it's at least Dead-related...while also reflecting views about bigger issues--old vs. new heads, littering, cops, how much money the tickets cost. etc.
Being a died-in-the-wool liberal (as you described me in an earlier post, and while I grudgingly accept the label I would caution that I don't go 'big L' across the board--ask me my views on whether English should be a required first language for immigrants some day and you might be surprised at my most un-liberal answer), I always accept free speech on whatever topic is at hand...it just seems often silly given the topic of the forum to be talking about Kensyean economics or gun control, but yes, I recognize we all have views on things that reach beyond our favorite Shakedown.
BTW, if you're still reading this post, I sincerely hope I'm not the only forum-ite here who would describe himself--generally--as liberal. If I am, the world has certainly changed a lot under my feet without me realizing it (i'm the ONLY liberal to be found on a forum of Deadheads???), and I'll cry real American tears. (You know, because I just love my country so much, and--sniff--I fear for it.)

These talking head bozos--left and right--are all about bringing in the ad money...it's a particularly cyncial brand of "entertainment", but what infurates me is that it's heralded under the banner of "news." We may understand that, but the millions of people who glom on to "the message", such as it is, don't. AND they vote based on those extreme and divisive viewpoints. That's why we never get any meaningful reform.
You can glean more true wisdom from other forms of entertainment (i.e. an episode of "The Wire") about the way things really work than you can from watching a year's worth of Fox or MSNBC.
