I have been scanning the reviews of the DEAD shows of late and been surprised by how many folks ONLY post reviews, and never visit the forum. To compare, I checked a number of other shows, and found largely the same proportion.

Interestingly, some reviewers are having "discussions" via the reviews--ie, attacks and counter attacks, just as we do here.

I am intrigued by the fact that so many of us Forumites rarely post reviews, and by how many reviewers never seem to post here...that latter fact especially surprising, it seems to me, given that they so obviously enjoy the back and forth, etc. Dr Flback seems the one exception, that at least historically, was a diehard reviewer that came to the Forum once in a while...not many of those, though...

Anybody else struck by this?

I've also noticed that....it's kind of puzzling. I wonder if most of the reviewers don't even notice this forum exists. Or whether they're such idiots they couldn't contribute anyway! Judging by most of the reviews, I'm thankful those guys aren't posting here too....

I'm guilty of posting hardly any reviews - I guess partly because it's time-consuming and unrewarding. But if you think about which posts are seen more and longer, obviously, if you say something in a show review, people will be seeing it for perhaps years to come - say it here in the forum, only a few people read it, & folks in the future can only find it accidentally.
Which is just due to the lousy way the Archive's set this up. I'm sure at the start, this forum was thought of as just a little messageboard for fan-chatter & random browsing - which it is - but over time, it's also become its own archive of Dead discussions - you have to be quite the dedicated searcher, though, to find them.

Well Billy T., I'm not sure about the whole review thing. I read them and a small fraction of them are intelligent in respect to the music, some of them are fun because of all the CAPS and e!x!c!l!a!m!a!t!i!o!n marks, then some are truly just ridiculous - posting because you can get to the internet sort of thing.

Personally, I've reviewed plenty of shows at DH and thought about posting over here in the reviews but then I found myself wording the reviews in the mores of the Review section (How can you say it's only a 2!? ; What do you mean you can't hear Jerry? ; JaguarBoy sure doesn't know his shit from shinola) you know, that sort of thing. Then I thought that the people who I would be writing for already have an opinion and probably would read it anyway as has been stated in replies to this post already.

I like that they are separate like the way the back-of-the-house crew at a restaurant is a different and always at odds with the wait staff and bartenders. It keeps a palpable tension that keeps the place together that might not be as great as its parts.

(Oh, and thanks for the snub in your response to your own post!) :P

Hey man, you gotta know I would never snub the guy what championed 68 and put together the "best of by year" compilation at Hook that so surpasses all such activities at most any such sites!

My bad...see my explanation below if you care...if I worked at it, such obvious screwups would not occur, but you gotta understand it's just fun and games, and errors of this sort absolutely predicted by the methodology (originally developed so you can memorize the names of all your students when teaching classes of over 100 students at University...works pretty well, but there, when you screwup, as long as the correct student responds somewhere in the class, you don't look bad since it just appears you were gazing in the wrong direction...esp if that is toward the attractive young coed with tootsie pop in hand).

I have posted few if any reviews, since they're just opinions, which are cheap. I love to read the reviews by others that are actually recollections of having been at the show. I even copy those into my notes on the shows that I keep offline. But apart from a very few people whose tastes seems to reliable match my own (Dr. F., Capn Doubledose, and a handful of others), I just don't care about opinions. So I don't post my own, usually.

But over here in the forum we have something of a community. I know that if I ask a question, I'll get an intelligent answer (mixed in there somewhere among all the sarcasm); probably several. And while I don't know anyone personally, much less go fishing with one of you or live in the same town, I feel like I know a lot of you to some degree. That doesn't usually happen in the series of reviews.

I agree with Monte(?) who said above that this is a great experiment in democracy, like Craigslist. In my day job, I'm a digital librarian -- I try to turn a great research library inside out so people can learn whatever they want. There are a lot of good models, but the Archive is in a class by itself. Collections, reviews, user submissions, forum, downloads -- exactly what the Web should be about.

Yep D-1, this place has been rolling along exceptionally well in my view. Why, I think that if we were to poll everyone about now, we'd find that it is one absolute Web-based Woodstock. Even amongst the tribe here, a variety of accomplished sorts...I suppose folks here forgive my ramblings on these paths, which I hope never cause those unmentioned, as important as they are to the whole, to take offense. But, I was just thinking of how much various individuals bring here, whether it be Rob, the forum Poet Laureate; Monte, the Pictorial Poster of Excellence; Helives, and LiA with their Tome-esque Reviews; Dali with CD Covers of every sort; Tiger, Strat and huntr with advice on all matters of technological significance; and, of course, who can forget the kindness of Arb and McGlone, or the Soul of Ashes; or CCharlie/rasta (who knows how to classify him?); or that chick, Sainted Stephen; and if BD and Coach K weren't here, how'd we know about the East Coast south of NY?; and Ganges, dilcurrie, SD77, MSun, and all others of Foriegn Locales; besides, the contributions of Jerrob, BlkPeter, CFreedom, Deadbuck, Mickmac, the Doc, PurpleG, craven, the cranky Dire, the rare posts of High Flow; Treeap, caspers, Northstar; the fishing trio (boats?) of Elbow, JGly, and CLIFF; GoP, BE, both gone but not forgotten?; or WWDream; and the young punks like NC & K-Man; not to mention Baron, Lobster, Wharf rat or otherwise, Compsurf, veblen, UUnknown, SDH, CPW and his early era girls; or Earl and economics 101; alyca, SRCueball and his recent hijinks; or SpSwords, Stealz, snori, ducats blow?, nagdot or is it me?, ringsbells, fireeagle, dilcurrie, greenbud, MDewd, patourkid; Pkelley--the kid lawyer; JOTS and the Pats GROK; BGnarley, Wineland, Not a typical, darkeyes, Liam, Deadbuck, Cush of bookstore fame, JodyC, airgarcia, D&Mercy, OldNJhead, GrendelC the liberal, MindofJ and the submariners of today, Zaorish, CCity, Sleib, AND PPecker JGannon, dogsinapile, waynecs, Nedhead, billydlions, finnisterbaby, JS 86, littledire; Miss Divine, the future Mrs Prime Minister (?); edgehead, snow & rain, soogJohnson, skippy61, JCed, squbarker, amosearle, buscameby...this is going way too long! Ha--that's what you get for that...you were actually there, trust me, and got deleted.

Now, you think I am making this up? Seriously--you were "in" as an abbreviation--"DM" and I know this because I have to go back to a previous time I did it (ie, I cheat) because the little memory trick only works with recent interactions, and I used by "letter D" for the likes of Death/mercy, Dire and so on, and then thought they had been covered, but the "DM" for "death and mercy" that I had interacted with, "REPLACED" your "DM" in my little memory list...

Does that make sense? So, it was a mistake, as I mentioned, because you were there six months ago, but yesterday couldn't be recalled because you were replaced by a DM poster I had interacted with more recently...

Sorry, but otherwise, I would have to actually WORK at this and it wouldn't be "fun"...

I've noticed. The names in the reviews rarely match the names here. :D It's a different set of expectations isn't it? If you write a review, you don't expect a 'reply' (but you might engage in a little back-and-forth if you do). If you post in the Forum, you want a reply (usually). I wrote about 20 reviews (a drop in the bucket when there's over 4000 shows or w/e), but stopped reviewing when I started writing in the Forum.

The Internet Archive is the greatest experiment in democracy on the internet - perhaps standing shoulder-to-shoulder with Craigs List in many ways. Many people may not realize the sophistication and power of the advanced search engine here. You can use it to instantaneously find and glean very interesting and important facts and info. You also get an endless hook into some of the greatest media files to have ever been transferred to the internet. As the usual moron I am, I found myself first-off reviewing shows that I loved, especially several that I attended. My reviews are biased with this haunted love of mine. So I stopped reviewing after about 15 shows. Not to mention, I am a lousy reviewer and a terrible critic. Terrible. Then I found myself reading some reviews, like I thought I was gaining knowledge or something. I think there is perhaps as many bogus reviews as there are decent reviews, or close to that many. How many times have you noticed that? Of course, around here, as Rasta has said, "to be a regular poster here who joins into the conversation, one has to develop a thick skin and put up with some disrespect ala some of the real trolls here."

I've written a few reviews. Usually I do it when like High Flow stated the show has some really good stuff that has been missed in previous reviews or I feel is misunderstood completely. Mostly though If I write a review it's either that the show completely rocked me or I was at it and wanted to share some of the experience right or wrong. It's interesting though with so many new uploads recently there are many shows now without any reviews, that are obviously top stuff, that I have written a few on them too. Mostly though I find that due to my end of the night schedule of music listening I've found I'm often to tired to write a proper review and my thoughts on the particulars of one show are lost to the ether until next time.
Writing in the forum is usually feels more relaxed for me so mostly I choose that instead.

I love to read the reviews and I used to do reviews fairly often. Then it seemed to be a bit repetative as I have rarely found a GD show that I haven't like in at least one way or the other. The really early Acid test shows, no use for and i used to love to takes acid. Then I started to post instead perhaps for the banter the conflict that once in awhile rises. In a nutshell the conflict resolution on not, give a chance to put you thoughts and feelings and love of the Community and the Band. Got into a few squabbles Robthewordsmith might remember, but i have come to realize this is an part of the fun.

I started in the review section but then found the forum more useful. There are a handful of guys I trust in the review section but the remaining folks tend to review based on the good time they had. That's cool if they choose that way to go but it's not very useful for me to pick out shows. And yes, I found that defenders of 1995 can get very chippy in defending shows from that year. Again, if you dig 1995 it's no skin off my back and that's the usefulness of this site. However, I should be able to "objectfully" say the Wharf Rat from NJ that summer is the most horrific thing I heard from garcia since I have followed the GD and not be called a "hater".

I wish more forum-ites would post reviews b/c the reviews I find are mostly lacking in objectivity. (i.e. "me and my friend were so wasted at this show; I remember thinking Jerry looked like Mothra and Phil was Godzilla and they were both breathing fire." Ummm....thanks..so, do I want to hear this how or not???) I look for reviewers (rare as they are) who also post regularly on the forum b/c they are usually the most knowledgable and reliable for a good show. But much as I'd like to see more shows reviewed, I also wish there was more specific show discussion on the forum. For example. Liamfinnergan is always good for an excellent point-to of a version of a tune...SDH recommends great shows via forum post often, and many others as well. Much as I can get into the "side discussions", even the idiotic political ones that make no sense in context of a forum about a dinosaur band--I do wish it would focus more on THE MUSIC. I mean, think about ir...we've got some 2,000 + shows to discuss and parse over from every era...there's still a lot of good recommendations to be made.

I see your point, but in a way, all the community interactions, as DH1 noted above, lead to strong feelings of affection and respect, at least on my part, for so many members here that I realize it matters more than the rest...how many times can I blather on about 12-29-68 and 6-14-68, right? But, the degree to which folks foster a positive self projection (ie, through kindness, tolerance, insight, etc., often revealed in off topic tangents, be they economics, military history or pet peeves while driving) seem to me to make this a much more rewarding group, all the better served when something new comes along.

Witness, EG, the absolutely great series of discussions of the latest RTrips...I think that many of us gained in that exchange given the long standing relationships that had been established prior to our heartfelt exchange over this newly released material. Just wouldn't have played out that way if we were a bunch of anonymous reviewers.

In a way, this was the underlying motivation of my post. The reviews are generally isolated commentaries that you can't place in any sort of context for the individual. Here, however, the history of each and every poster, at least most of them anyhow, greatly enhances the information provided while kicking around new material or a new take on old material. You just don't get that from the reviews, IMHO.

Hmmm, almost gushing there...distressing to some no doubt, but you probably all just roll your eyes and say "poor old sentimental Tell...it's pathetic he doesn't have a real life...but maybe I'll listen to 6-14 and post something about it just so he doesn't need to take another physical therapy session for his broken down back"...or maybe you just ignore it, but either way the background probably helped you decide.

In spite of all our differences over the years here GC, as just one small example, I can safely say that we share a great deal of our "outlook" on the world at large, both somewhat cynical/realistic bleeding hearts (in a good way), etc., etc., and it helps me understand your position on all sorts of issues, music and otherwise.

Jeezzz, I think I am even boring myself now...

No, I actually made it all the way thru your post ;-)

Largely, WT, I agree. Over the years (jeez, that's crazy) we regulars have all come to have recognizable personalities and it does make for more engaged discussion/ranting/what have you.

But in your example of the Rtrips posts, I would say that DOES fit in w/the larger discussion of 'what's the best version of Row Jimmy', etc.. b/c it's at least Dead-related...while also reflecting views about bigger issues--old vs. new heads, littering, cops, how much money the tickets cost. etc.

Being a died-in-the-wool liberal (as you described me in an earlier post, and while I grudgingly accept the label I would caution that I don't go 'big L' across the board--ask me my views on whether English should be a required first language for immigrants some day and you might be surprised at my most un-liberal answer), I always accept free speech on whatever topic is at hand...it just seems often silly given the topic of the forum to be talking about Kensyean economics or gun control, but yes, I recognize we all have views on things that reach beyond our favorite Shakedown.

BTW, if you're still reading this post, I sincerely hope I'm not the only forum-ite here who would describe himself--generally--as liberal. If I am, the world has certainly changed a lot under my feet without me realizing it (i'm the ONLY liberal to be found on a forum of Deadheads???), and I'll cry real American tears. (You know, because I just love my country so much, and--sniff--I fear for it.)

But as long as it makes Glenn look like an idiot, making no good points, thats what counts, which = no idiot's viewpoint should even be considered (except the idiots on the left)

All of these TV shows focus on the most divisive issues to maintain the insanity which is "party politics". When all we ever wanted or needed was a little common sense from our politicians. You may say I'm a dreamer..... You'd be right. Sometimes I feel like I'm the only one. None of these face-boys ever has an original thought or opinion. They're selling ads.....that's all. It's "BREAKING NEWS" 24/7 because the boomers buy more Viagra and the housewives buy more Swiffers. That's the result of their babble. The intended result, I might add. If we fixed health care, schools and SS, they'd go broke. Damn, these shows are good too. They hook me all the time. Sometimes I walk away w/ a sick feeling.....subconsciously. I never click away from one of those shows feeling uplifted. Never. That's why I stay away and stick w/ music and sports. The challenge is to stay informed without relying on these particular fuck-faces. Best of luck with that. Really.

I think high flow mighta nailed it...at least how I feel.

These talking head bozos--left and right--are all about bringing in the ad money...it's a particularly cyncial brand of "entertainment", but what infurates me is that it's heralded under the banner of "news." We may understand that, but the millions of people who glom on to "the message", such as it is, don't. AND they vote based on those extreme and divisive viewpoints. That's why we never get any meaningful reform.

You can glean more true wisdom from other forms of entertainment (i.e. an episode of "The Wire") about the way things really work than you can from watching a year's worth of Fox or MSNBC.

It does seem that we are not as constrained by the timeline--a few times I have dreaded how time passed so slowly while I waited from some inane post of my to slide off the board, somehow too embarrassed to delete or revise it, but a review seems more permanent...

Well there good notary and Prime Minister, writing a review is like preaching to the choir, while participating in our little tete a tete is more like preaching to a horde of heathens.

Over there, civilization, over here, Lord of the Flies.

I occasionally go both ways myself. Just want to make sure I still have the ability to spew self-serving, overblown, pretentious effluvium in more than one locale. Aren't you all lucky?

Well, yeah...if you can stick around.

Hope all is well. Or at least tolerable. Gone are the days of fun filled trips to Utah, I suppose...but those shall return, or live on regardless?

I'm afraid that although my activities here have decreased substantially, I am still keeping an eye on you unwashed freaks and hopefully will be able to resume annoying one and all in the near future.

As for trips to Moab, we are already planning another one for perhaps next winter (hopefully too cold for those annoying cyclists, we have a hard time getting around them in our 74 GMC Jimmy 4x4...yeah, that's right, Al Gore's nightmare machine).

I am a selective reviewer. I'm not even sure why I review such a small # of shows, etc.. I guess if I observe something that has not been stated in previous reviews, I like to add a note.

More often I prefer to review material that I feel needs a boost. Worthwhile stuff that so many people have overlooked. This place is laced w/ hidden treasure.

Hmmm, thought you were talking about my gym shorts, but worried as to how you knew...we haven't even had that two on two game yet...suppose we can get BD to coach us? "This place is laced w/ hidden treasure."

Sure, but then I'd have to admit that when I review shows, I only do so as jboyguar.... oops! didn't mean to blow my cover.
