Ya got me there Robert. As Phil's chops developed the interplay between he and Jerry on some of the jams did become crucial. Maybe Phil is still searching for the lead guitarist that he can play off of, and vice versa, that well. The chemistry didn't seem to be there with Warren. As talented as he is, there is something about Jackie Greene that just doesn't, in my opinion, fit right. I haven't heard any of the shows by the current line-up. A lot of Deadhookers are touting the PLQ line-up with Warren and Jimmy Herring..but isn't two lead guitarists just a tad Allmanesque. And what is the deal with opening a show with "Jam"? Shouldn't that come later as a segue between tunes? Oh well, several of the latter day incarnations seem to feel the opening "Jam" is what the audience wants.

Bill, I think Jackie Greene (and I've said this elsewhere hereabouts) is one of the finest interpreters of Grateful Dead songs around at the moment. The guy just OWNS New Speedway when he sings it. If you haven't before (and even if you have) take a look at Phil and Jackie playing Brokedown Palace together and tell me what you think. I think its beautiful.

And here's Jackie doing New Speedway:

(check Phil and Jackie teasing Bird Song halfway through)

To answer your other point - I don't honestly believe Phil is in search of some Holy Grail Garcia replacement, I think he's just really being revitalised and having a whole lot of fun playing with different people. Jimmy Herring is another fine Dead interpreter (you've listened to Jazz is dead?) but I think Warren Haynes, much though I like him, finds it hard to leave the Allmans out of the mix.

And that opening jam? Could just be a way of warming everybody up.
