Here's your answer: (look closely at the 7:50 mark for when he changes from finger picking to using a pick) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AQFeuAbLHro

Funny, and hard to believe, its been almost 9 years to the day that you posted this link. I remember watching that sequence at the time and thinking how cool and subtle that switch was. By chance got to thinking about that video clip today, tracked down your post, and clicked on the youtube link only to find that the video had been removed. Can you tell me what show this was? I'm hoping another copy has been uploaded. Thanks!

Thanks! That's so clear, even my old eyes can see it. I always thought that finger picking with just finger tips would sound quite different from using a pick. Doesn't seem to be the case here.

With an electric guitar, finger picking sounds the same as using a pick or finger pick. When playing an acoustic guitar, the sound is not quite as bright and sharp.

I thought that was a can of cheese whiz?

Yes, Garcia said in an interview that he held his pick where his missing finger was and that he easily could switch from finger picking and back without missing a beat.
