Have you ever seen this Grateful Dead video clip? It's Next Time You See Me, shot in Copenhagen, 1972. This clip was upped to YouTube on Feb 18, 2009. Bobby has a poop-eatin' grin going, Jer is boppin' to the beat, and Pigpen is all business. All this is going on in the first few frames of video at the top, when they kick off this tune. Pig's vocals are sharp. Dig that funky hat of his.

Great quality for videotape - it was video taped on 2-inch quads. You'll see a couple of "hits" in the 2-inch video tape playback, due to momentary tracking errors. It's a multi-camera shoot, nice YouTube transfer, great sound in the clip (sound board), e/v RE-15 mics on vocals are lined up along the intimate stage setting. Phil is happy. Keith cam is iso'd, we have Pig cam tight shot, Jer cam - check him out "directing" - Jer is sending "signals" to the sound crew during Pig's harmonica solo. Jer is gesturing, "hey! - my solo is next", and he's signaling for more volume. Great Keith, Billy, and Bobby shots.

Near the end of this clip, notice the shot of Jer's pedal steel guitar on stage-right. Look at the tight "2-shot" scene of Pig and Jer - beginning at the 3:36 mark in the clip. Jer's pedal steel guitar is behind Pigpen. What's up with the steel guitar, Jer? The setlist I'm looking at doesn't include Looks Like Rain.

imo, it's Priceless! -- here's the YouTube clip

Tivoli Theatre
Copenhagen, Denmark
17 April 1972

Jay Ashley has Digitally Remastered GD's sound board recording on The Archive from this night. He was using the Bertha DAW (Digital Audio Workstation). This is A fantastic show with absolutely wonderful sound.

Did the video tapes from this Tivoli Theatre live TV production in 1972 ever get released? This TV production scenario is virtually a clone of what we did for Challenger Productions at Telluride Bluegrass Festival in 1985. In both cases, there were Millions of Dollars of TV Broadcasting cameras, switchers, sound equipment, and video tape recorders were rolling for the whole damn thing!!! There were numerous people working on these crews as production operators, engineers, and broadcasters for these 2 projects. These Tapes are somewhere on Planet Earth!.

They didn't know the setlist before the show started which is why the pedal steel was on stage (in case they decided to play Looks Like Rain). You always set up the gear you have in case you need it.

Maybe NRPS played a set too?

During this tour, the only shows that NRPS shared the bill were Bickershaw and the last four performances at the Lyceum.

Deadlists has this to say "Most of show appeared on Danish Television in 1972. The video has been replayed on various European channels..."

I just listened to the Next Time You See Me track on Jay Ashley's source. The sound boards match up together from this source and the YouTube clip. The video source fades out after Pig says "thank you." That's all we get to see. Obviously, the VTRs were still rolling tape and recording this.

But, holy crap, 5 seconds later after "thank you" -- on the Ashley source -- Phil says, "I just realized my monitors don't work."

Then the Band erupts into a Vaudeville-type comedy -- at the spur of the moment. It's a "tripping act" about the Sound System, and they shake it out with a special effects rant. I would love to see their expressions on Camera and video tape.

Beyond Priceless!! This is Timeless!!!

Many more clips from this night on Youtube - just search Greatful Dead, Copenhagen - you can see part of Phil's rant and a good chunk of the show.

Here's the "monitor rant" and a hot OMSN... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P8R_R6xwdwI

Thanks, John. That was fun.

Frankly, I'm sick of Google searches, sick of searching YouTube, sick of hearing about FaceBook and Twitter -- and, I'd like to have my life back. The Grateful Dead scene is as close as I can get to that.

You BASTARD!! -- THANK YOU!!!

I even started wasting my time earlier today, to d/l from YouTube GD's individual clips from Copenhagen on 17-04-72. I was thinking, I could get everything from those quad tapes this way, redo all the filenames, create an Item on The Archive, upload them as FLV files in the correct order, and this process would create a M3U File. Then you'd be able to d/l this M3U file and the whole video would stream to your (Win Amp) player. It turns out the above process is one BIG HACK JOB. Plus, I almost was gonna say something here about this crap. What a Joke! I think I can stop back here, perhaps (very likely), once I finish your recommended d/l. Right now I'm at 80% done, 400 kBps rate, eta 5 minutes. I'll need to spot-check it first. Thanks, man. Okay, THAT'S IT!!! Dude, you're killing me. It's an AVI file, 700 MB, 352 x 240 video resolution, 1:17:23 long. This is The Shit. It's a Direct professional transfer, and a file-derivative thereof. Excellent quality. The lip-synch is damn close... pretty decent for a dinky compressed video / audio file. So many clips on YouTube are unwatchable because they playback way out of synch. This source is good. For some reason, this source would not play video in my Win Amp player, but audio plays fine. It plays fine in my Windows Media Player. I've experienced this before. No big deal. It's so good, I'm just typing this and letting it play. I don't dare fast forward!! Sound board quality Audio. It was hissy for the first moments, but now I'm not noticing it. I'm listening on unprofessional halfway decent speakers that I'm very used to. My player's video looks good at 200% size. Holy crap! Camera Shots of Jer playing slide guitar in his Hurts Me Too solo, beginning at 46:35 mark. 3 different camera angles on this. dudes wearing Masks at 1:00:17 ummmmmm, I was just thinking, I guess everyone else already has this file, except for me?

Nope, Never even knew it existed til your search, which i humbly tagged along on, Brought out the link. I really like being able to watch a whole show vs just song after song on utube. Saving this vid until the next ice storm.

So thanks : )

I didn't know about it either, not that I'm an expert like many here.

Speaking of which - are there other high-quality videos of shows/partial shows out there available? Anyone have stuff on video to share?

Well Monte, we'd all like a rewind on life. Since that's not possible, stay on the sunny side, listen to the music play!
