Forum: | movies | Subject: | new video/audio player "opt in" is live! |
- a much more robust player than the current one
- better sharing to facebook and twitter (which works for off-site embed codes)
- much better and richer "embed" codes, (using iframes) that now work on iOS and non-flash devices.
- ability to embed playlists off-site
- fullscreen (captioning works when in flash playback mode; not in html5 mode) for many browses for off-site embedded archive videos
- issues with new player and very "short" in height bars (like our audio items with 1 or few songs) fixed as best we can (in terms of what we can cram into a 30 pixel high bar when the "Greek Columns" icon is clicked).
- pre-buffer 5 seconds instead of 1 second -- this should help users with slower connections to get less "stalling" (at the "price" of slightly longer before a song/video starts playing)
- fixed bug with GratefulDead soundboard "stream only" shows and firefox (esp. if no flash plugin or is blocked/disabled) (not new player per se, but showed in it). they wouldn't play at all due to a file setup issue.
- fixed but with titles for GratefulDead soundboard shows in playlist (not new player per se, but showed in it)
- fixed offsite embedding issues with old embed codes (not new player per se, but showed in it) (had some issues when we changed from www.archive.org to archive.org; had some issues related to getting the Thumbnail first playlist entry)
- fullscreen firefox v10+ feature added
- firefox v3.6 fixed (some linux; PowerPC macs, etc) http://archive.org/post/416537

Selecting the "Reply to this Post" link, using left mouse key as would be expected, does nothing. I tried it several times but it does nothing.
As a result I had to open the "Reply to this Post" link in a new separate tab to be able to respond to it. --which I am doing now.
I am running Firefox 11.0 on Linux Mint Debian Edition. With all updates applied. I am not seeing this problem

You *can* also copy in the /embed/ url, and if someone clicks on it in facebook, it will open a new tab w/ the player maxed out to entire page.
You can put our /embed/ codes/urls (they look like <iframe src="...> into a wordpress blog but only if it is "self-hosted" and not on wordpress.com (they don't allow <iframe> tags)

I love IA! My only issue with new player is too-short view of file names in the new embedded player - any way to make them see longer file name descriptions like the older one did??

the titles -- at least when the player is in "html5" mode
(you can tell by right-clicking over the player and seeing if it looks like
the typical flash menu (flash mode) or not (html5 mode))
so that should at least help for some of that.

I have to assume that most of us, if not all are using Microsoft, well I'm running W7 with IE9, now back in early December 2011, Micorsoft kindly did one of their MAJOR updates, YEAH, we all know what damage these IMPROVEMENTS do?
OK, I could not install any Adobe Product, so NO FLASH, well that's a huge chunk of web-sites that weren't worth opening. Right I fixed that after 6 weeks of Calls to the big M and Adobe, neither could help me and yet they created this. NOW, please realise that Blogs and COMPLAINTS in general could be found most places on the Net about these problems.
Well 3 days ago Mr Gates entered my computer AGAIN and I lost scripting or at least a portion of it and sound on my Media 11.
Back to Microsoft, YUP, another couple of hours, OK, wait for it folks. Go to Microsoft FixIt Centre On Line, you will need a Live ID account. I only had to run 2 FixIt plans, my IE9 is working the way it should.
I know this is a TAD long, but I had to keep it light.
Best of Luck!

This new player here works PERFECTLY, instant download, no lag or breaks.
I don't believe it would have worked if I had not fixed Internet Explorer.
Firefox is no better at that the moment.
Google Chrome is probably the most stable IE at this time.

but there are some stuff that I hope you do something about it.
1- When I play the first audio file and ends. It stops. It doesn't shift to the next audio file. which I really don't like that. I want it to shift to the next audio file and so on.
2- I hope you add the option of repeating.
3- I hope you make it scroll down. It really doesn't. When I scroll down with the mouse, the page scrolls down but the player doesn't. and when I say scroll down I mean with that thing that's between the right click and the left click on the mouse, which I think it's called "mouse wheel" but im not sure.
sorry for my bad English :/

1) our player does auto-advance. some setups can have some minor issues with that, but our code does advance to the next track/video
2) we could add that sometime in the future
3) it pretty well does autoscroll down now. if you are using an iOS device (iPad or iPhone, etc.) then we have it setup for "one finger scroll" when you place your finger in the track listing

they had a bug for ~12 days (when we made the new player the default, Mar13,2012 to Mar25) for firefox (only) where the .ogg formats were not being served properly (the bug technically wasn't due to our new player, but since the old player *only* used .mp3 for firefox (using flash) we didn't notice this issue until last sunday).
it'd be great if this fixed things for you...

I use the IA from overseas, with very slow internet, so I generally have to buffer. That means I have to hit the play/pause button and then let the little gray bar fill up. The problem I'm running into with this new setup is that when I hit that play/pause button, it doesn't immediately register (or seem to register) visually, so I don't actually KNOW if I'm buffering or not. That's a real pain.
Once the thing kicks in, it's fine. But it's finicky. No idea why. Previously, it was always responsive; I'd hit "pause" and it would switch to the "pause" image and do it's pause thing, right on command, like a nice obedient little player. Now, not so much. I go "tap tap tap" and it ignores me, as if I haven't asked it to do anything at all, until it decides it's good and ready after a bunch of commands. (Maybe you genetically spliced it with a beagle? Or a teenager?)
On the plus side, it seems to be playing (buffering) faster for me these days, though that may not be relevant to the player or anything on your end.
Btw I use Vista with Explorer

i could have you try a "dont start playing until 10 seconds is buffered" option and you could let me know if that's better?
(i believe we currently do the default of 1 second (only) -- which is great for a satisfying "start quickly!" experience, but not if you're far away from our "California, USA" only server centers...)

It might be hard to explain without demonstrating (and luckily you don't have that problem, LOL, though of course you could try to get IA to pay for your trip to Nepal to check out what I mean :-) )
But anyway, when it DOES buffer it seems to have fewer glitches overall, and I can listen to amazing free music from halfway around the world with a few clicks and a bit of waiting, just like magic, so I shouldn't whine!

As I've already mentioned in an earlier post. The new player playes the video immediately but the sound control because null. Here is the link to one of the movies I have watched today:
http://archive.org/details/Breakdowns_Blowups_1936-1947
I'm using the latest Internet Explorer my machine is top of the line gamers machine with Windows 7. When I was running Windows XP I had some issues with the new player bogging down maybe due to cpu usage, so I always used the old player. Today I discovered that I couldn't get some of the movie DLs to play even on the old play and had to download them directly to my computer. I don't mind doing this because I have several different players loaded on my machine so I have no problems playing audio/video. But I am puzzled why your new version will not play the audio.
Let me walk you through it: When I choose a movie to watch before I click the play button the sound control is clearly activated. It's lit up with the sound wave )))) coming from the speaker symbol. The second I click to play the movie the sound symbol fades and the sound waves )))) disappear. There is no reaction whatsoever to clicking on the sound symbol. It's deactivated. Any clues?

Today, when I choose the new player, the video starts immediately but the audio becomes null. i.e. there is no audio the button deactivates almost as if it is muted but this seems not to really be the problem. I use internet explorer and windows 7 is my os.
Oh, one other issue, many of the uploads will not play or stream directly for me, I have to download them to my computer and play them with one of my various players. I hope this helps and if you have any suggestions I'd appreciate hearing them.

flash is especially well done on windows installations and can dynamically drop video frames (while keeping the audio intact and rolling) if/as needed so it's a much nicer experience than buffering stalls or such from some html5 solutions.

(went up from 512kb/sec to 700kb/sec for the video track, plus another ~128kb/sec for the audio).
but the new vs. old player will have no bearing on .mp4 filesize and bandwidth as they both use "progressive download" of our .mp4 / .ogv files
however, if you ended up in a scenario where the new player was preferring the .mp4 and the older one was preferring the .ogv, then you *would* see some increased bandwidth. but i think that shouldn't really ever happen...

The old, flash-based audio player still works fine for me, but I understand it is on its way out. When the time comes I suppose I won't be able to stream any audio at all, it would be download-only for my older Mac. :o(

I've tested again this evening and found improved results with Safari 4.1.3, but for most pages in Firefox 3.6.28 where I had trouble earlier, the new media player still does not load, even after clearing the cache. "Psalms of David" is loading in Safari now, but still does not load in Firefox. One item that still does not load in Safari is "The Bat" video.
I've tested another video this evening, "Andy Crocker," which did not load in Firefox but loaded fine in Safari:
http://www.archive.org/details/Ballad_of_Andy_Crocker_1969
When the player does not load, the whole player does not load -- I do not get any items at all. See attached screen shots.
Please let me know if I may do some additional testing to help troubleshoot this further. Thank you.

Thanks for your reply. Although Firefox 3.6 was first released in January 2010 (21 January 2010), it is still being updated. It was the latest version of Firefox until version 4.0 was released last March (22 March 2011).
Firefox 3.6.x is the last version compatible with PowerPC, so as I mentioned in my first post, I cannot upgrade the browser. Likewise with Safari 4.x.
The group of pages I linked above as not loading the media player, still do not load for me in Firefox 3.6.28 as of today (though they do load in Safari 4.1.3). The media player for "The Bat" video is now loading in Safari, but with a long delay (about a minute), though still not loading in Firefox. [See screen shots attached to my previous post.]
I would appreciate if this issue with Firefox 3.6.x could be resolved, as it is my main web browser. Since some pages do load properly, it seems as though a comparison might be made to determine what prevents certain pages from loading the new media player. Please let me know if I may do some further testing or provide additional data.
Thank you.

[from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Firefox_3.6 ]
Firefox versions 4 through 9 had all reached end-of-life status while Mozilla continued supporting Firefox 3.6 with security updates. Coinciding with a proposal to cater to Enterprise users with optional Extended Support Releases beginning in 2012 based upon Firefox 10, Mozilla has tentative plans to discontinue support for Firefox 3.6 on April 24, 2012
i wonder what PowerPC folks are going to do? maybe they'll have a v11 upgrade that works, then? i will try to hunt down a PPC mac at work monday anyway...

No, we will continue to use Firefox 3.6.x. All newer versions of Firefox require an Intel processor.

(found a v3.6 firefox at home here w/ ubuntu...
indeed, as i guessed, it seems to trip up on html5 [video] tag
so by default, if we detect you have a firefox v3.6 browser,
we'll automatically prefer you into "flash" option.
patrons are free to override back to html5 if they find their
firefox v3.6 can handle it, though, too).
you may need to load a page and then reload it (we use a small cookie, "avpref=flash" to set to indicate to try flash first, then try html5 second (instead of the default of try html5 first; flash second)

. . .but if I click the link "I prefer flash (when possible)" then the media player does indeed load.
The media player for the "The Bat" video is loading fine in Firefox now, but it still taking about 70 seconds to load in Safari 4.1.3:

at that point, it sounds like the normal/occasional issues that we have from time-to-time. sometimes our datanodes (we have two servers per media file) get a bit overloaded and so can our network (get saturated) at times.
we do our best to clear problems and keep the servers happy, but as I can't reproduce the "Bat" issues, i'm hoping it's just a random blip, etc...
thanks for working with us and giving us so much valuable feedback and information!!

what about "i prefer flash" link below the audio/video?

IE9: New player w/HTML5= = "The video could not be loaded, either because the server or the network failed, or because the format is not supported." New player w/Flash = Sound, no picture. Firefox 10: New player w/Flash = Sound, no picture. HTML5 is fine. Chrome 9: New player w/Flash = sound, no picture. HTML5 is fine.
The "normal" player has sound, but no picture in all three browsers.

i suggest maybe trying a few 10 second videos and many test encodes

i can alternatively suggest ffmpeg and even our build script we use to compile it, and process we use to make our .mp4. You can see how we use ffmpeg and qt-faststart to make an .mp4 here:

Here in Illinois we just passed new legislation that makes it impossible for us to dispose of aging hardware and outdated digital equipment anywhere but at a special recycling center where "de"manufacturing takes place in order to "harvest" useful material from old electronics. Landfills are spilling over with obsolete electronics and computers. In order to stay in compliance with State law it behooves one to make their older configurations work with today's intenet. Please help us to do just that. I am unable to watch content with your new viewer on any of my Macintosh OS configurations that go back beyond Leopard, OSX 10.5 This review was written using Mac OSX 10.3.9 Panther on a B & W Power Mac G3, still a stunningly useful computer. we can't prioritize extremely old hardware -- that detracts from the ever modernizing and improving tech of the evolving software, OS, and hardware markets. so hopefully we can find a happy medium somewhere.

* When you click on a song to play the behavior to slide to the top of the player is unnerving. The song should stay where it is in the view and just play.
* There are still noticeable hiccups between songs. Algos to allow for relatively seamless playback (bandwidth constraints aside) has been around for a long time and especially for those of us listening to jam bands where one track is not complete without the next track coming right in makes it hard to listen to shows with the gaps.
* This is not necessarily a player bug but... Can we finally get around to implementing format conversion for SHN? Specifically to MP3 to allow for streaming? There's a lot of older material that won't stream because it's in SHN and I can't see any reason why the engine couldn't handle them the same way it handles FLAC.
Thanks!

1) well, that's the default behaviour of our jwplayer -- and we're trying to not add toooo much to our already heavy modifications and customizations to their player offering. So I think for now, since it's not an easy config option, we probably won't do that. But I'll keep your "vote" in mind going forward! (BTW, there are quite a few people who've already expressed that they like/prefer that behaviour, so it's always a bit hard to figure out the best solution for all!)
2) check out my recent reply to similar request/concern
http://www.archive.org/post/409746/new-video-audio-player-opt-in-is-live
3) this is strictly a kind of social/culture thing and preference of certain bands, nothing more. (that is, no technical issues on our end -- we could implement your request in under a weekend since we have a huge processing "farm" that could make the mp3 (and ogg) quickly. we have admins in LMA/etree (I'm assuming you are mostly concerned about those items?) who've discussed this. I'll bring it up to Tyler Huff especially and our collection team again...
Thanks for your thoughtful post and requests! Sorry I can't give you more of a "yes we can!" response, at least right now...

we have been thinking about doing a 'mass-mp3-generation' day where our servers would go through and 're-run' the derive.php task on ALL the shows and if they were a band that didn't want mp3s they would still be blocked from being made (from the CAT.lossy file i believe).
if you have specific 'old' shows you want mp3s made of, post them here and i'll re-run the file derive.php task and make them.
but as far as a whole 'rerun' everything... we will try and bring that back up soon to discuss!

right, i know very well about the _rules.conf and how there can be show-based rules as well as band-based rules.
i guess part of a scheme could be to try to recontact any band that prohibited mp3/ogg in the past and see if they still feel the same.

turns out we had a bad older h.264 derivative when our ffmpeg wasn't quite as good as it is now.
a rederive of it fixed it, yay!

I hope, if the new one replaces the old, that adjustments can be made, so that no matter how long a file name is, it will still display correctly.
Thanks so much for all your dedication and hard work.

even if you had caching turned off for our site in your browser,
the extra pieces needed for new player aren't that big (nor are the # requests that many as we use a .zip for distributing lots of little files for flash; and png base 64 encoding for html5 inside an .xml file)
there is now a "I prefer flash" new link at the bottom of the new player.
how is performance for you when you try that?

you just may or may not see it depending on the item
(post a /details/ page link if you like).
look for the archive logo in the player's "controlbar" and click that
to get to the *very* detailed page that shows various ways to embed our audio and video with copy/paste embed codes ready to go!

that makes sure the "embed tips page" button and link

Also the subtitles for 'Le Grand Blond',for instance, do not work on the new player when the image is full frame on either Firefox or Safari. Although on Safari they do work when the image is small size.

-safari can native play .mp4 and jack right into h.264 instructions that are hardware accelerated
-firefox can native play only the .ogv (for now -- h.264 passthrough to macOS in a video tag is coming AFAIK) so it's only going to be able to do software decoding and then subject to your CPU/RAM combo more so, etc.
For firefox, you can "opt to flash" and still use the new player, and then you should get the .mp4 playing in flash (which should have ability to hook into h/ware acceleration).
Captioning not working in fullscreen mode is about right. We expect that in the future captioning will work for html5 mode and our new player.
But for now, you can watch w/o fullscreen or opt to "prefer flash" (again, still using the new player) and you'll be able to watch the video with caption overlay those ways at least.
The landscape is *rapidly* evolving/improving -- it's an exciting time to be working with and using video on the internets!

ok, i figured out the issue and once again, it wasn't due to the new player, but due to some changes maybe 2 weeks ago made under the hood for setting up items before they get their file lists transformed into a player playlist.
i've fixed it and pushed it live.
thanks for letting us know about this and helping us improve the Archive!

do you have a browser that does not support HTML5 [video] tags -- it seems like maybe you do. all modern browsers should handle either h.264 or ogg!
you can also try the "i prefer flash" under the click-to-play area and then you'll get a flash-plugin playback of our h.264 (mp4) derivative.
if you are using a browser that neither supports HTML5 [video] tag *and* doesn't have flash plugin or its disabled, then you're kinda on your own and would have to click an mp4 link to play/download yourself.... 8-)

One example is the 'Lone Ranger' 15 chapter serial. It truncates most, if not all, chapters.

Forum: | movies | Subject: | Re: new video/audio player 'opt in' is live! |
alrighty -- i think there are 2 separate issues going on here:
(1)
cosmetic -- in the playlist *below* the player, indeed some of our videos were showing just the minutes and not the seconds.
I think this is one of the shows you mentioned above:
http://www.archive.org/details/RidersOfTheWhistlingSkull
That used to show 52:00 in the playlist, now it is the correct 52:23. There indeed was a (cosmetic) bug for many items in the code for dropping the seoncds -- fixed globally now and live.
(2)
i think this .divx source and some other similar items is cutoff a bit early -- at least when I play the .divx it ends abruptly a split-second after "The End" appears. so, so does the .mp4 in the video player that you play/see. not much we can do there if the uploader cuts a bit early (eg: before the full credits roll, etc.)
another item
http://www.archive.org/details/TheLawlessFrontier1934
stops after the "The End" and the fade to black (now?) so that seems fine.
(that one would have shown 49:00 and now it's the proper 49:48).
maybe you are using the flash-oriented side of our new player and this fix now fixes the issue, entirely?
let's hope!
thanks for sticking with me/us and making The Archive a better place!

i'd be *quite* certain this never worked before given how your items are setup (but i'm willing to accept i could be wrong 8-)
here's how you can make those turn into the real "animated gifs" for your item
(and unfortunately it *is* a bit of a pain...)
if you have an item with identifier of "myIdentifier" (it's the thing after "/details/" -- so the item "http://www.archive.org/details/camels" is the identifer "camels"), then you want your uploaded video (or pick the one you want to show in search results if 2+ videos in the item)
to be named exactly that identifier, plus whatever relevant extension
(for example, "myIdentifier.mov")
That way, when we make the ".gif" for the video, it's named "myIdentifier.gif".
So you'd have to edit each item and make this happen, and then rederive. I can help with the rederiving if you want to do the editing, etc.
When the search results page is shown again, then the GIFs will show up nicely.

Forum: | movies | Subject: | Re: new video/audio player 'opt in' is live! |
OK here's what's going on (I know what you're conveying, even w/o the /embed/ 8-)
When you are on a /details/ page, you can "prefer" to have flash or html5 first. However, it's just a preference order -- both are used.
So in practice, if your browser is something like a recent chrome/firefox/safari/IE9, with a flash plugin installed, then it can do both
(it can play a .mp4 via flash plugin; it can play a .mp4 or .ogv "natively" via an html5 [video] tag). We default to try/use html5 if your browser says it can play with that method, and "fallback" to flash plugin.
Due to some issues with some patrons, we decided to reverse that preference order as a clickable "sticky" option (to prefer flash plugin first and only use html5 if flash plugin playback not available).
We haven't (as of now, at least) opted to allow for that on /embed/ pages directly, per se -- BUT if you prefer flash on the archive.org site, then if you visit (using the same browser) another site that is using an archive.org /embed/ code -- you'll prefer flash there, too! 8-)
Lastly, it's worth pointing out that your preference is just for you and your browser. It doesn't change it for all visitors of archive.org for that item and doesn't change it for all visitors of a given off-site embed of an archive.org item.
Hope that makes sense!

What I understand from your reply is that there is only one way to embed the movie and that, on my Internetsite, the movie is either shown as a flash or a html mediaplayer, depending on what preferences the viewer has chosen on archive.org?
Can you fix the thumbs in my embedded player, the old ones (http://www.archive.org/flow/flowplayer.commercial-3.2.1.swf?) I mean? Or do I have to replace all code with the new code?
Thank you in advance.

OK, so we found the issue with MendiCoast TV (not related to the new player) -- this was for the flowplayer now "older" embed codes. (We recently updated our serving of missing images to return a 404 response code, and that somehow tangled up serving of thumbnails in general for these embed codes, eek! (that wasn't my change, but it's still our bad for not noticing the breakage).
fixed now for you, too?
and yes, you understand me right. in the new embed codes, the same preference of "i prefer flash more than html5" (or vice versa) on archive.org site will also have that preference for offsite embedded audio/video for that user as well (it's a very small simple cookie set or not set, to make that preference -- and with the new embed codes, any of the small cookies "move around" with the embed. nothing creepy going on here! we require all employees here to ensure all user logs are irreversibly anonymized for our visitors -- we *DONT* want to know what you are reading/watching/listening to! 8-)
hope that's all helpful info, etc.

But concerning the player. - From what I can work out here embedding only uses the new player.
- For some reason the new HTML5 player is a blank, black rectangle on my system. Flash player works, but clicking the ia.org logo doesn't give me plain old html embed options: only the facebook button and half the twitter fit within the window, if there's any other buttons past that I can't see them.
- The 'embed this' code beneath the old player presumably uses the HTML5 version by default and not the Flash because I can't see anything on my embedded page but a black rectangle.
- Weirdly, I'm using Debian Linux and Iceweasel, for which most people seem to find HTML5 a better option.
So I have no real idea why I have this set or problems or what solutions might be. Any ideas?

The embedding code taken from the 'embed this' link seems to default to the HTML5 version. On my computer the HTML5 version is a big, black square with no embedded player in it that does nothing. For obvious reasons I'm not installing that on my website if it does nothing at my end.
So the problem is still the same. :/
It seems to me that the easiest solution at both ends is working out how to either force the new flash player only when embedding, or to show the embed code that forces the old player only.
As for getting the 'right' solution, I don't know why the HTML5 doesn't work at my end, but if you want details on my software/hardware setup, just ask. Happy to help debug if I can.

thanks for the agent string -- we detect that to be this firefox 3.6 exception case, and if no "avpref" cookie set on a /details/ page request,
we set "avpref" cookie to "flash"
which will make flash kick in for our new player, instead of the html5.
so that *should* mean things are working for you now, pretty much every item. is that correct now?

i'm *hoping* it's part of the jwplayer JS detection code that is thinking your browser *can* play the html5 variant, but then thinks none of the formats are playable. (I have a similar issue here at home with the PlayStation (3) so am hoping they both have slightly similar issues -- because my PS3 *can* play .mp4/.mp3 via flash plugin (old player works) but as pooping out for the new player, too...)

It seems very disappointing and very very strange that the thumbnails for the videos are online but yet they are not view able. I think the viewers of this very find website would like to see this issue fixed.
Thanks!

yes, that is by design since we handpicked a specific time range

after 8am should be fine and plays, etc.

you'll note some other shows in other channels that seem less news oriented are also not viewable, too.
it's just kind of a bit of tradeoffs in showing what we archived, and what we felt we could make public, etc.
I do get both of your points and concern, of course, though, no doubt about that.

I do recall about four or five years ago when the PRE 9/11 coverage was up on this website I was able to watch the coverage from even the day before the attacks.
I believe to Capture the whole picture of how 9/11 was covered it is prudent for the PRE 9/11 coverage to be up working online for viewing. I still find it very strange that yet the thumbnails are online the video almost but does not play.

I don't mind that there is a new player for those who like it on those systems on which it works. But it is discouraging and silly that it says "While I still can..." regarding switching back to the old player. Even if the button is _really_ small, please let us always have the option of going to the old player for older systems. :)
The old video player is one I've seen on other websites too, and I like it a lot. It's very fast and responsive, and works great. The new player doesn't work at all. It just gives me a black screen. I watch the Computer Chronicles all the time on this computer, and don't want to resort to streaming through an external program someday. I'm using Ubuntu 10.4 LTS with the newest version of Firefox 3.6 (from 2012). I've also tried the new video player on a Windows 2000 machine using the newest (2012) version of Firefox 3.6, and it didn't work at all, while the old player worked great as always.
Regarding the audio player, the newer player seems slower and bogged down on an old machine. The old player even works on my Windows 98SE machine running Firefox 2.0.0.20 with Flash 9. The new one certainly doesn't :) Though on that machine, I always choose to stream through WinAmp for a much more fluid experience, but the point I'm making is that the old player even works on really old hardware.
Please uphold your motto of "_Universal_ access to all knowledge", and don't cut off those of us that choose to, or can't, upgrade. I really love this website, and truly hope that it will stay universally useful. It's as simple as always having a link to what works perfectly right now (the old or current, depending on your point of view, audio and video players.)

if you upgrade win2000 to firefox v11, i'm guessing you'll see quite a different experience.
have you tried clickthe "i prefer flash" link under the video player?
that way you can kind of force our player to try flash *first* and only try html5 after that.

i'm pretty sure there is some issue w/ older firefox versions, and i can help if you take a look at this new page:
http://www.archive.org/details/testplay
it will run a bunch of tests. if you can paste the results to a reply to this, i can then be much closer to figuring out where the issue is and fix it.
(i'm guessing you'll make it through to the very last test, then fail the final embed...)

(that's item-based)
as far as improving the playlist...
i've dropped the fontsize from 13px to 11px, and done "hard right cut" of 34 chars for titles (latter especially helps where a title or fallback filename has no whitespace for more than 34 chars).
that helps quite a bit for all 18 items. there's just a few now that have some minor issues. maybe you could move the "part 1" and "part 2" from the end to the front on them?
sorry i don't have a perfectly ideal solution for you...

I'll show your my user survey of people wanting a new player if you show me yours? ;-)
I see 18 items which I believe you uploaded.
Most seem 100% OK, maybe two nixon related ones do have some of the issue you mention.
I'm trying some extensions to allow word breaking with CSS but nothing working quite yet. The new player has two major "display modes" -- flash and html5 video tags. It's been setup with various baked in assumptions on playlist entry height so I'm not sure trying to extend that is the best idea (and the more we customize, the harder it is for us to upgrade to a player upgrade).
So nothing conclusive yet, but poking...

*Scroll/seek doesn't work. You have to listen to the whole song or nothing.
*Volume control is now an on/off toggle. The sound is so loud I had to turn my soundcard down to "1". It's still loud but any less and it clicks off, too.
Can't the old player remain live until the new player works? As of now the old player isn't even loading track titles.

Still no slider on the volume control; it's either on or off.
Perhaps these bugs should be fixed before the player even goes beta? They are rather basic and essential to the usefullness of a player...

(does for me on chrome).
the issue is we try to detect the duration of each audio/video item
before the playback starts at all, so we can display a time duration
on the progress bar. sometimes that detected duration is slightly off
by a small percent, like in this item's case unfortunately.
but if you play it back, you should see all 39 seconds play!
can you say more about your embed issues?

i suddenly seem able to reproduce what you've been patiently been reporting when i force to flash -- and i see the issue. the "ogg" file is the "derivative" from the "original" file which is the "mp3". oddly, the "ogg" is coming up as 34 seconds; the "mp3" as 39 seconds.
we prioritizing "derivative" times, and thus using 34 seconds. so if you're playing the mp3, you're *INDEED* getting cutoff ~5 seconds early, since it's treating the "duration" of 34 seconds as "stop after 34 seconds".
still looking how to uncode myself out of this nice little paper bag that i've gotten into.... 8-)

I reproduced your excellent and patiently persistent bug report and pushed live a fix. Your item is now properly showing "39" in the playlists in all situations (before playback) and also "39" during playback in all situations (and thus our new player isn't cutting it off at "34" seconds like it was before).
so sorry about that, and thanks for helping to make Archive a better place!

Black area appears above playlist; new player doesn't seem to load unless it is playing- you can't pre-load when it isn't playing- seems that the old player was more reliable as far as losing communication- if you click past where it has loaded, not only will it not play- but requires refreshing before you can play in the red area again. I've also had issues with the player jumping to another selection unexpectedly. This computer may be blocking active x with anti-virus software. ( Windows or Stopsign, I'm not sure which, which is not able to be over-ridden by hitting the control key while loading.

basically it's a tradeoff of how much width to take as a minimum for any playlist, vs having longer tracknames.
different players solve it differently, and this new player requires, at least for now, a hard limit on the number of chars.
so we try to nicely chop and "..." longer titles...

i *did* see a win7 machine look a bit funny w/a "vertical gap" for IE7/IE8 (and thus needs to run w/ flash plugin to show the video/audio).
other than that, it sounds like maybe you're using either a video-style embed or an audio item w/ the playlist option on but maybe only 1 audio file in the list?
do you have a link for me?

it actually starts out bigger now, at 400x300
(instead of old player starting at 320x240)
for "click to play" state,
and then both, when playing start, bump to 640x480.
maybe that quadruple in size isn't working for you? what OS and browser combo?
the new player also has a fullscreen button that work for:
-chrome
-safari
-IE7, IE8
and for firefox it maxes out to the browser size
and for IE9 it's one or the other (don't have IE9 on right now)

I do know under the old video audio player, the video image managed to both fill up my screen and leave enough room to see the play/pause button and length of time at the bottom.
The new a/v player just shows to me a small square.

at least i saw it not expanding to the full intended vertical space,
so yes, the video remained much smaller than intended when playing.
that's fixed -- can you let me know if that was indeed the issue you were seeing that things look better now for you? with a 4:3 aspect video, there should be no "black bars" on the sides and it should be playing at 640x480
(and of course one can fullscreen to larger than that..)
sorry about that bug! it was only happening on the flash variant of our new player (which is mostly just IE7 and IE8) so we missed that in testing and QA when we were focusing on functionality and all the little tests/requirements to pass the player into this "beta" opt-in release)
cheers,

it does play playlists, but putting multiple items together into a single playlist (items that are on our site) is possible, but a bit more work and tricker...

i hope that it's just an item or two that are unluckily on a slow serving box here (ie: not the new player).
you can also try the new "I prefer flash" link below the new player to see if any better...

yes it is an opensource player. we have opted to buy the commercial version of it, which simply allows a few extra features like "related videos", "sharing" screen (to twitter/facebook, etc.), and removal of the default watermark/logo. but otherwise it is the same player.
I copied info below from:
http://www.longtailvideo.com/jw-player/license/
JW Player 6 — Open Source Edition
The use of the JW Player Open Source edition is governed by a Creative Commons license. In short:
JW Player Open Source - You can use, modify, copy, and distribute this edition as long as it's for non-commercial use, you provide attribution, and share under a similar license.

you can use/try our embed codes -- they work very nicely directly on most websites/blogs and you can size/playlist/autoplay them as you like!

There were a few months of weirdness but now it seems good. My only slight complaint is that you have to scroll through a show with lots of songs; maybe all songs should be visible at the same time as the page loads, as used to happen.
Many many thanks to everyone for all the effort you go to on our behalf.

Also on "Yours Truly Johnny Dollar" when I start listening, it continues for about 3 minutes and then jumps to the next selection, and continues repeating this.

One thing I would like to see the archive do is to create new, higher resolution versions of film footage. We can always down sample but should not up-sample. So, instead of 320x240 or 640x480, shoot for a minimum of 1280x960. Using professional gear that will create a hi-res version of every frame could lead to community restoration efforts to repair the raveges of time digitally.

we mostly haven't been getting HD uploads, although that is slowly starting to change.
we *do* have a way an uploader now can upload an HD mp4 file where our existing A/V player will show a SD/HD toggle (defaulting to SD) to at least allow the viewer to pick a higher quality for some items.

in terms of the "inline video player", we have periodically recomputed our .mp4 and .ogv files (which are now at 480 vertical (640 horizontal, depending on aspect) for .mp4; and 300 vertical (400 horizontal) for .ogv
we sometimes get grief for touching older items, so we're a bit cautious about how often we "re derive".

The Qur'an has 600 pages approx ( exactly 604). If you divide it on 30 days, that is 20 pages per day.
It sound too much? that is difficult to do right? But if divide it on the 5 prayers a day, it gets easier.
If you read 4 pages after every Salah (prayer) in Ramadan then you have completed the Qur'an.
furthermore, if you want to complete the Qur'an twice, you read 4 pages before and after Salah.

yah, there's a *lot* of people who take issue w/ how much CPU the flash plugin can use/take, so we're *really* glad to present the html5 new option as an alternative for relatively new browsers to take full advantage of.
i get pretty annoyed myself to find paused flash-based videos are taking 1.5GB of my RAM *resident* and CPU when they aren't doing anything, for example.... 8-P
but some folx strongly prefer flash, too, so YMMV! we'd like to ideally give our users the option to do whatever they like best...

I tried to play a few versions of MamasWill2010 on your new player.
I found that the playback stops intermittently. The problem persists even with the version H.264 124MB Comp 20%, that is, I compressed it down to 20% of the original source, a file which I brought back with me from school.
The original source is Mama's Will_AVID Media Composer_4.14GB, a Quick Time file taken off the Avid MC Editing Workstation at Concordia University. Of course, I am working with digital material taken off from Sony HD F-900 Cameras. Why should HD be a problem after it has gone thorough the editor? Maybe the wide format 1920 x 1080?
I wonder if going back to your old player would make a difference? If I do, can I come back again to your new player?
As with the posting of The Agony of the Ecstasy (2002), my aim in posting Mama's Will (2010) on the Archives is to allow my graduate thesis film to be seen by a greater audience, including the supportive texts showing the public how such a piece of video art is conceived and produced at the film school level.
In any event, I'd like to thank you and your staff for allowing MamasWill2010 to be place in the Community Video section of your Archives. Thanks!
Sincerely yours,
David George Menard, Post Graduate Film Production,
Mel Hoppenheim School of Cinema, Concordia University,
Montreal, Quebec Canada.
P.S. If I over-edited some of the text files supporting MamasWill2010, like some sections of my MFA thesis, please forgive me. I'll leave the licensing job to the Archives. Thanks! DGM/09-14-12.

our player will use our ~1000kb/sec "derivative" (h.264) .mp4 files
for playing.
there are subtle coloring differences in the timeline/scrubber portion to show the later part of the video buffering/download, vs. where in the video it is playing. can you see if that's the issue -- that the two indicators race into each other at the times of the stopping intermittently?
i would guess you had the same issues w/ our prior player?
you could alternatively try the "Prefer flash?" link under the video to try flash (if you weren't already) since it can do in some setups a slightly better job of "frame dropping" if it's a CPU issue or in some bandwidth cases).

When the instructor displays his desktop, I am unable to make out any characters he types on his screen due to poor video quality. Would this be that the video isn't in HD format, or it is in HD quality but the player can't render HD?
This isn't a projected image on a projector screen, the video switches to a video screen capture.

both would show the same quality, same thing.
however, the .mp4 for these were derived some time ago and we've since
made our .mp4 derivatives be quadruple the pixel count (320x240 ==> 640x480) and ~double the video bitrate (~512kb/s to ~700kb/s).
so i'll rederive all the MIT videos now and that will help for just about everything that doesn't play ogv natively (which is *mostly* firefox).

Audio playlists work otherwise. The hanging playlist is within the height I specify, but the scrollbar is truncated at the bottom unless the height is set to at least 380 pixels. If the playlist just has a few items and I set the height to 380 (or more) there's a big blank space below the short playlist. Trouble is, when I'm embedding a playlist of unknown length, it's a pain to format the embedding; right now I'm using the trial and error method.
Happens on FF-12, Safari 5.1.7, Chrome 19, and iOS 5.1.1.
What does the parameter "frameborder" do? I've tried lots of different parameters, but it doesn't seem to change anything onscreen.
Autoplay doesn't seem to work on any of the above browsers.
I saw something about a "Start" parameter on one of the forums, giving us the ability to start a video at some timecode after the beginning. Haven't been able to make that work either.
Any chance of getting updated usage and parameter documentation? I've worked a lot with JWPlayer, if there's something I can do to be helpful.
Thanks!

I am a GNU/Linux user and use a variety of Linux approved by the Free Software Foundation (FSF) as truly free, as in freedom. http://www.gnu.org/
I regret to say that your media player complies with systems that use proprietary software and not free ones. Consequently, your information is privileged only to corporate interests or those under their control.
Please take a moment to look up gnu.org and the guidelines therein. It would be a shame to let archive.org, which is a noble idea, under control of Adobe and other such interests.

there is an opensource FLEX builder/compiler that jwplayer points to and AFAIK uses to make their .swf files. their .as (actionscript) code is available and opensource online.
i'm not a lawyer or remotely aware of much of the issues at hand. however, the player checks, with open JS code, to see if browser doesn't seem to be able to playback html5 video tagged audio/video by default, and if it doesn't seem to be able, uses JS code to see if flash plugin is installed. if so, it changes the play area into an object tag. so what the user's browser does from there is kind of somewhere in the gray zone of us "under control of Adobe", maybe?
anyway, please feel free to re-look at our setup and comment more about what you primarily object to. for example, would you prefer we just issue a "your OS/browser cannot play this media" message instead of falling back to checking for flash?

I can try to get audio working a bit (but it's a bit more complicated since often there are 2+ tracks for items some would like to share). At least I should be able to make the single audio file items work and/or at least play the first track, for archive.org audio items...

html5 is not quite yet there -- but the latest versions of the main four browsers (IE9, firefox v11, chrome, safari) either have fullscreen capable already (which we use -- eg: safari + chrome)
I just tried:
http://archive.org/details/HERE_IS_GERMANY
in safari and chrome, and new player w/ html5 fullscreen-ed fine.
in firefox v11 (and i think back to v9) it expands to within the browser window. you can find the "View" menu then "Fullscreen" and then click our fullscreen button to make it nearly perfect fullscreen right now.
not sure about IE9.
if you miss the more "real" fullscreen, you can always elect the
I prefer flash (when possible)
link and you'll be back to flash-based fullscreen
anyway, point being, html5 is close and i know from conferences and contacts that all are *rapidly* converging to make this work very well as it's understandably a highly desirable feature for users.
so it's coming very soon to all browsers, and we're staying on top of it and updating to it ASAP!

for audio items with less than about 5 playlist entries.
the issue was the "sharing / embed" popup was too cramped to fit everything previously, so a bunch of stuff wasn't showing up.
so maybe give it a try again now and see if you still don't see the
"Click for Embedding Tips and Help"
button that you can click on to get a nice detailed page on how to embed with lots of different variants.
if you are still having problems, can you paste a /details/ link from our site that exhibits the problem still for you?
thanks!

so you are using it in a blog or site you host and can't get it to show up?
when you click on the "Show me!" links for the relevant kind of item:
http://www.archive.org/help/audio.php
http://www.archive.org/help/video.php
does that not work for you?
so for facebook, it's best to copy in the /details/ url.
You *can* also copy in the /embed/ url, and if someone clicks on it in facebook, it will open a new tab w/ the player maxed out to entire page.
unfortunately, as far as i know there is no way to have facebook use an embed code (can they even inline video player show anything that's *not* uploaded to them directly?) actually, obviously, youtube (the world caters to The King) works, doing some more homework/research...

(one possibly nonideal thing is our new player uses the [video] html tag instead of [audio] tag for playback of audio (which means you see a black page, typically, but hear the audio -- which has confused some of our patrons!(understandably!)). when i raised it to the jwplayer folks, they said in testing, android was "even worse" with audio tag alternative.
i think it's a bit difficult to get all the android variants tested well and sorted out, since there are so many OS versions, screen sizes, and hardware installs to try (that's what i hear from the player folks).
not sure what we can do, but i'm noting it at least as a reported issue...

Thanks again,

was it audio or video?
trying to embed "stream only" audio (eg: GratefulDead soundboards) had an issue until Sunday for firefox users (fixed).

I upload the audio, let it process, click on the archive.org logo at the end of the player with this text underneath it.
I will try and upload a screen shot of what I am seeing.
If this isn't it, should I just click on "switch me back to old player"?
I don't want to be stuck with an older player that won't play the files.
This all came about because currently audio on our site is not playing with a player that we have used on 99% of our site. The player was working not even a week ago.
You can see the player on this URL: http://www.piie.com/publications/interviews/interview.cfm?ResearchID=2022

from your "archive.jpg" attachment,
click the "Click for Embedding Tips and Help" image/link
and you'll get to that embedding page.
(for "short" audio items, we don't have enough vertical space to write the embed code into the player area -- for videos, we don't have this issue, so another option is to try a video on our site and click the "greek columns" icon and you'll see the embed code directly, as an example, there at least)

A few initial impressions (on the Live Music Archive / audio player version only, not video)
ex:
http://www.archive.org/details/jj2008-06-14.mk4
1. I like the bigger 'font' in the streaming player.
2. I kind of like how when you click a song it makes that song the 'top' song on the player's display list / it auto scrolls down so the blue 'clicked on' song is the top one.
3. PROBLEM: cannot seem to 'seek' using the seek bar to jump to a part in the song, no matter how long you wait to allow it to buffer.
4. Time disparities between what the player list says a track length is, and how long it says the length is on the actual track player as it is playing in the upper right corner. Usually a 5-6 second disparity, and the time listed in the player list usually is the 'true' time of the track.
5. the 'share' button fades in / out every few seconds instead of being static. Intentional?
6. Clicking the 'share' button, you get the embed code and the "Video Link" (even for 'audio' shows. perhaps make a more open text choice? like "Media Link" ?
7. Also for an audio concert show, having a big red X over the 'Video Link' section made me think that because this was a concert the 'Video Link' URL didn't apply / was greyed out (though I think it is just placement of the 'close' X button that glows red and changes to black when hovered over.
8. The "For more formats and information:" it isn't that clear that you are hoping the user click on the roman-style archive-icon. It kind of is, but I think the user / eye keeps going down to the 2nd line 'Embedding tips and help'. maybe change "For more formats and information" to "Media Details Page" ? or "Item Detail Page" ? ..
9. the 'help' link linked to "Embedding tips and help": http://www.archive.org/help/video.php is pretty 'new', and I understand this feature is mostly for video and audio just got lumped into it, but could you add something about audio on the linked page?
Just a few observations. Thanks archive.org / Tracey for always keeping improvements on the lookout for the user's experience!
Going to any pages on archive.org that have the new streaming crashes IE and asks to send an error report to Microsoft. (v 7.0.57) for some reason. archive.org loads fine, http://www.archive.org/web/web.php is fine, http://www.archive.org/details/software is fine, just when i click on the Live Music Archive and then get to a page with the streaming player on it, it crashes with the below info:
AppName: iexplore.exe AppVer: 7.0.6000.17103 ModName: mshtml.dll ModVer: 7.0.6000.17104 Offset: 0002efb1

*the times are now correct in the list vs when the track is played
*I like the 'copy' buttons next to the 'embed' section and the URL section in the 'share' button.

ok, I've updated it to be "Audio link" instead of "Video link" for audio items, at least in the "html5" / "audio tag" variant (unfortunately IE7 and IE8 use a flash plugin variant so they will still say "Video link", at least for now)

if you'd like, i can enumerate most of the cookies we might use...
[cookie name] [cookie value] [why]
newplayer jw [tells us you "opted in" to our new A/V player, so we dont have to ask you every /details/ page]
avpref flash [tells u you want flash only for the new A/V player]
the converse of any of those is the cookies are just plain removed.
we have a few more cookies related to login (that's quite standard)
and maybe just 1 or two more.
or maybe i'm way off track?
are you talking about cache size of A/V pieces for playback in your browser?

I can only imagine 2 scenarios where the above would have happened -
1 - it's a brand new computer, the Flash player has been chosen, but Flash isn't installed yet.
2 - It's a very old computer, the html5 player has been chosen, but the browser doesn't support it. (Do you have a 'suggest an browser upgrade' message?)
I can think of no other situation where IA would ask anyone to install anything!

yah, it's really stuck with me, too...
to answer your questions:
with our old player, we definitely make a nice red message (w/ link to adobe to get/upgrade flash) if flash is not installed or too odl.
for new player, if html5 is not possible in browser, and if flash is not installed, the click-to-play will become a download link.
i'm adding some changes now that will try to deduce if you're not able to get the player to work, etc...

right, i took a couple days off from the negatives to:
- think a bit before replying
- add a "I prefer flash" link below the player (to appease the flash lovers)
mainly, there seems to be a huge projection of "this is how my world appears" onto "so thus it must be for everyone else, too".
I'm totally sympathetic to users having bad issues and frustration, and dedicated to helping/fixing!
However, the reality of HTML5 vs flash is:
- HTML5 works better on iOS and macos, period, all browsers. flash doesn't have the hardware acceleration/support like it does on windows and it shows, dramatically
- HTML5 works better on linux, more than not, best I can tell
- With a crappy cheap Dell and Win7 here at work, HTML5 in IE9 is better than flash.
So yah, like you, I'm a bit staggered by how extreme some of the "I have issues / don't like the new player" reports are. Trying to sort them out and reproduce what I can!
Thanks for the positive reporting! I was starting to wonder how there could be so few "working for me" posts! 8-)

I've stayed opted in because it works very well.
System is Debian GNU Linux
Browsers are chromium firefox and epiphany. (mostly)
It works well on all of them. Two different engines beneath these for movies and audio.
The main limitation is my own ADSL(1!) bandwidth.
In fact I usually only watch/listen to the beginning of the files and then directly download (via the http link ) the ogv djvu or whatever seems appropriate.
Thankyou for making this as future proof as possible.
Congrats.
and.. Yeah ! We should say it works and well more often :)

Go here on a Galaxy Nexus with Chrome Beta: http://archive.org/details/compilado_ursonate_0002
You will see a message claiming that your browser is too old to play HTML5 video tags, and asking you to install flash.

do you happen to have flash on it -- and could consider the "I prefer flash" link as a temporary workaround?
the small number of android devices we have handy w/ coworkers at archive.org have seemed to pretty well work for us. thus far, android seems to me a bit harder to really "get working" since there's a lot of devices and i don't think the JS code from jwplayer quite addresses all the various checks, etc. (as you are finding).
i can maybe try some test/dev side pages for you to try, too, if you have motivation to see if we can workaround this together.... 8-p

As long as the Flash player is available as an alternative there is no problem, but are you really planning abandoning the majority of users for a small, albeit trendy, minority?

to wit, the html5 option is **much** better and more efficient for nearly all scenarios of:
-iOS
-any macos
-most linux
-some (maybe lots?) win7 + IE9 setups
macos/iOS do not have flash implementations where they can hook into a decent hardware acceleration of many of the video instructions --unlike the case for windows.
given the severity and utter rancor you have for html5,
i've add, to the bottom of the new player, a new
"I prefer flash"
link (which will still use the new player, but will not serve html5 as a possibility).
hopefully that will make the android setup happier?
-tracey
PS: it's not like we dont like android (which is now just slightly less market share than iOS). we prefer it here for its more open ecosystem. however, we just dont have a lot of their devices here as readily available as iOS. the older player doesn't even work *at all* in iOS (and can't -- because it is "flash only").

Flash is going to be around for years, people have far to much time and money invested in it to just dump it, and it's just so much more advanced. (Look at sites like http://www.audiotool.com/app . Try doing that in html5!)
Thank you for the 'I prefer flash' link, as long as it stays there until the other player is fully working, then I'm sure we'll all be happy bunnies :-)

Even if you do manage to get out of the browser the new player no longer plays in the background.
About a third of the time, returning from a forced-to-fullscreen embedded item takes you back to it's Internet Archive page, rather than back to the article you were reading.
I'm sure you'll agree that, all in all, this is a totally lousy user experience :-)

playing audio, when in "html5" mode on android (the default for most audio with our new player) does insert a [video] tag -- which causes playback to open the .mp4 style player and make a black screen and play the audio. so i will see if we can make that be an audio tag not video...
meanwhile, there is a new "I prefer flash" link at the bottom of the new player. if you click that, the behaviour is nearly identical to the old player -- it sends you a flash-plugin audio playing experience and the performance/experience here was the same in old player (flash) vs. new player (flash).
can't reproduce the "spining for HUGE amounts of time" here. I'm hoping that you just got unlucky w/ an item on a slow server (ie: not player related).
"Even if you do manage to get out of the browser the new player no longer plays in the background."
...neither does the old player.

I noticed the increased load time whilst I was updating a lot of embeds to the new player. Every time, if I embedded the same file in both formats on the same page, the new embed was far slower to load. One of the drawbacks of using iframes.
Also, when it comes to keeping everybody's sites running smoothly, I'd question the wisdom of switching to iframes anyway. A lot of blogging, forum, and 'make your own website'sites don't allow iframes

yes, for browsers that *can* support a direct flash object/embed tag, the iframe method will be a bit slower these days in comparison.
but it's not entirely for flash-vs-html5 -- we are doing a *lot* more under the hood to:
- properly identify the files of an item (eg: if an item changes or file renames -- you're often toast w/ flash direct files named)
- find any captioning information -- over time, we plan to add "Universal Subtitles", which means multi-lingual tracks may appear over time and the new /embed/ codes will "just work"
- allow playlists
but yah, i notice it on my own site/blog -- adding a bunch of /embed/ permalinks is a bit more "expensive". but we're hoping their permanency over
time and their flexibility and auto-updating will more than make up for it.
many of the other embed media sites have opted for iframes as well, and we are taking our lead from what we believe to be the industry standard.
may not be "news to you" or super convincing/great for you to hear, but there are some of the thoughts in a post, at least!

Since I'm in the process of upgrades I'll wait and see how these do on the site after it is uploaded to my new server with the upgraded site - I'm wondering if maybe the new players just aren't compatible with my archaic site.

If the old code is no longer viable then I have some work ahead of me changing those embedded ones over to the new code. lol
I have been explaining to people that it's possible the servers are busy and to please try back in a bit, though.
Since I'm in the process of upgrading Classic Cinema Online I won't be able to measure any further progress until the upgrades are complete. It could be a few weeks - I have to completely rebuild Classic Cinema Online from the inside out. I kind of have a sneaking suspicion, though, that the new players will work better once I've finished that - the system I'm running on right now is a little on the ancient side. lol

Anyway - I got a comment that some of the movies aren't loading for viewers in Australia.
Also, what I think is happening - many of these when they are set to auto load will show a picture of the "play" button while they're loading, rather than the "loading" image - so what may be happening is people are clicking on that play button which seems to pause the movie rather than load it, depending on which browser a person is using.
I tried to put a movie poster image in there but it won't show a poster and auto-load at the same time - is there a way to change that play button to a "loading" indicator when it's configured to auto load to avoid the confusion?

I'm seeing they play for me - after a delay. Also, I think people are getting confused - they see that play button while the movie is trying to load and when they click on it it pauses the movie. Is there any way to change the image when the autoplay is set so that people know the movie is loading? Thx

1. There still seems to be a time-duration disparity. The times for the tracks that loads in the player is consistently a few seconds shorter than the actual track length. What happens is that the song will load and begin to play. the 'true' length of the track (ex 4:02 for track 7) will display in the play-bar, but in the tracklist the 'wrong' time will still display. This is pretty consistent for all shows. Just a nature of how the code pulls the player in? I thought one of the 'mid-versions' of this new player fixed this time disparity?
2. Interesting to get rid of the 'share' button and replace it with The Parthenon symbol / button. Not sure if I agree with this. People might just see The Parthenon icon as part of the player / dead space and not know to click on it to get facebook links...
3. I like how the pop-up has the large square Parthenon logo with the text "Full Version at Internet Archive". Clicking it of course goes to the shows permalink details page. Not 100% sure I agree with the word use. Maybe "Click to go to Show Detail Page" .. Who knows, "Full Version at Internet Archive" is pretty concise and gets to the point and name-drops the IA appropriately :)
4. The red-X 'close' button is well placed. better than it was before over the embed text
5. how come the two 'copy' white buttons at the extreme side of the URL boxes was removed? I like those 'one-click' copy buttons. it helps out those of us who are too dumb to know to highlight all / right click and pick 'copy'. especially for long embed codes / file names. I think the 'copy' buttons should come back.
6. The 'Post to Facebook' and 'Post to Twitter' links work great. They auto-fill / set up the show to be posted to fb/twitter very well!
7. At the bottom, you seem to have extra space and it just says "Click for Embedding Tips and Help". I personally think it should say 'Click Here for Embedding Tips and Help' (the 'here' being the key part, since the user can think 'click where? the fb icon? ..' .. I just figured since you have room, make the 'here' more direct so the users click there to get to the help page: http://www.archive.org/help/audio.php?identifier=ymbfbb2011-08-22.a
8. On the above help page http://www.archive.org/help/audio.php?identifier=ymbfbb2011-08-22.a , the header looks to be a different style then the rest of IA (small Parthenon icon, blue text, instead of the usual larger Parthenon and white text. intentional as a hidden help page?)
9. "This allows you to setup a audio player that serves an item from archive.org on another site like a wordrpess, blog, or website. "
minor cleanup to:
"This allows you to setup an audio player that serves an item from archive.org on another site like a wordpress, a blog, or website."
10. At the bottom in "Embed a single specific audio file for item with 2+ audio files:"
the embed text seems to always pull the show jj2008-06-14.mk4, where-as all the other embed examples auto-populate in with the show ID of the show the user was listening to / clicked on the embedded link from. (in this example ymbfbb2011-08-22.a). Intentional? Seems that this bottom embed example would have the same show ID as the rest of them.
11. All the embed 'Show me!' links have at the bottom "return to help" which goes here: http://www.archive.org/help/audio.php instead of the show-specific / URL show ID (ex: http://www.archive.org/help/audio.php?identifier=ymbfbb2011-08-22.a ) is it possible to go back to a show-specific help page since the identifier you are at is somehow pulled in obviously, it is in the URL...
12. the 'and we figure out what additional formats we were able to transcode/"derive" from and then figure out what the audio player can handle). ' ... the 'derive' word is linked to here:
http://www.archive.org/help/derivatives.php
are those the true current audio derivatives created with a .wav file seed ? I thought 64kbps mp3s were not generated anymore. that chart could probably be freshened up.
Also I see no mention of .m3u files or .zip files being generated ... add to table?
13. Farther up in the help page it says: "You can see our new permalink-style embed codes with our new audio player. Hover over the audio area, and when the "bar" appears, look for the (greek columns) Internet Archive logo icon , click it, and then find the "Embed code" line, and copy the code there."
This may need to be updated. You no longer need to 'hover' over the audio area. and what 'bar' is appearing? The greek columns are 100% of the time in the upper right of the player. re-word ?
14. That's all for now! Great work tracey! Just some observations / QA/QC.

(1) yah, we identify the duration for each A/V file, for what gets used in the track listing and at the start of playback. but that is sometimes off by a bit. no real resolution there, but the player *should* correct it to the right time once it starts loading/playing.
(2) a brewster request -- for more "branding". and unfortunately, we can only easily insert 1 extra button into the "controlbar" area, reliably, so we went the the [|||] logo instead of [>] share
(3) kinda taking cues from brewster chat on that one, re; the text choice...
(4) yay!
(5) it's just that they don't quite "fit" for audio in flash mode. we could make the player wider to accomodate, but we might get some folks not liking more horizontal space to the player? maybe we can revisit this idea once the "old player" is gone (and the world is easier to change)?
(6) yay!
(7) that's a good idea, but would take some time to pull off as I had to render these pngs myself and then recompile the flash portion of the player to include the pngs...
(8) yah, that's an example of our "slimmer / unified" header and colors. it's slowing rolling out in a few pages (eg: http://www.archive.org/details/1Day http://www.archive.org/911 ) and hopefully one of these days it or something similar become more of the default for our pages.
(9) fixed, thx!
(10) yes, it's intentional because not all items will have 2+ A/V files in them and I wanted a "stable example" of an item for each of audio/video to show it in a sensible way. I but a big note for it now to explain there's a different ID 'in play' for that (and now only that) example embed.
(11) great idea -- dunno why it didn't occur to me to do that!! fixed, thx!
(12) yes, you are right about 64kbps -- they have this (not obvious) asterisk where it's noted at the top:
(*) Some derivatives only apply to certain collections.
As far as .m3u or .zip files -- those are 100% generated on-the-fly now, on demand -- so we don't mention them in the derivative table since we don't technically make them (and thus don't put them into the item directory)
(13) good call -- you have to hover for video, but not audio. I've updated each page respectively, thx!
(14) you continue to be one of our amazing assets here at the Archive! Happy NY!

using this (obviously with the correct < >) it shows correctly the player for a single file; but it's not working for my item (http://archive.org/details/WarscapeSonata), player it's not showing anything:

There is .ogv but no .webm.
Great it is at least playable on freely distributable OSes but still WebM (VP8 codec) would bring better quality/bandwidth than OGV (Theora codec).

the negative is the last time we did a very large sampling and testing, it clocked in at 3.5x longer to transcode compared to x264 (.mp4) and the x264 time is similar to the .ogv encoding time.

if you don't have the bandwidth, you don't have the bandwidth (and thus things need to buffer / "spool").
since we only make one "derivative" / user accessible format size/quality, for each uploaded video, it's a fine line/tradeoff -- if we make our videos too small, we get complaints that they don't "look good", especially noticeable in fullscreen mode. other sites make 2-5 video qualities and then they can hook in frame dropping metrics to quickly determine what the best quality is for the "available bandwidth" at the time of the request for the client.

you may be getting a small representative set of items that are non-ideally encoded .mp4 "original file" variants.
do you have an identifier you find "sucks big time"? (it's the thing after /details/[THIS THING] )
meanwhile, try this short play length item (but same encoded size) and see if it is much better than what you're seeing now, behaviour-wise:

When I click play, the "archive" icon (the architectural design with the columns) moves from the player all the way page right; so much so that a scrolling area appears on the bottom to move there. No matter what song I choose or if I just click play, the same thing happens. As of today, I cannot play a soundboard recording from the archive site.
This problem has persisted since the new audio player was introduced. However, when I use a PC, there is no problem at all.
(With audience recordings, there is no issue.)
Any help would be really appreciated! All best.

would you mind trying again and letting us know?
SORRY for that oversight and inconvenience
(it was actually something external to our new player -- our Ogg Vorbis files had something wrong with them, since fixed)

In contrast, 21s Precinct is excellent audio quality.
After all your hard work, it is too bad that the audio quality is so bad on Casey, Crime Photographer. Could you please fix it on your end?
Thank You!
