I started a project before the boards were removed in November of downloading the most "downloaded" shows by year and started listening from '95 back so Jerry would sound better and better as I got into the earlier stuff. Ijust listened to 7/8/78 from Red Rocks and what a show it is. I am looking for input from the die hards out there who can point me to other shows that have the intensity in literally every song, Jerry singing like a man possessed, sliding extra notes into songs that I've heard played dozens of times. I have to rank it up the there with the Swing Auditoriums and Cornells for sure. Comments?

Interesting idea. Check out 12/12/78, Miami, Florida. 1st Set. 1/2 step>frankilns, peggy-o, or the staggerlee and the soulful playing on Music Never Stopped.....good stuff.

Let me know your thoughts.

Cheers

5/11/78 or Dick's Picks 25. This show was a favorite even before they released it. Talk about possessed. This is noted as the "mescaline" show in The Dead Heads Taping Compendium Vol. 2. Most everyone in the band had supposedly indulged on the substance. The show is intense. I think Garcia's singing is the most emphatic of his career in the sring '78 tour, especially this show. But it might be due to the fact that they are tripping. The vibrato in the voice is heard on a lot of tunes.Check out Cold Rain and Snow (probably the best version out there), Scarlet->Fire is out there and Stella Blue is as good as it gets. Listen to Garcia's vocals on this Stella. He throws in the vocal ad-libs all over the song. "Stella Blueeee-ahh".

Other shows to check out
5/4/77 I like this better than Cornell.
4/16/78 When I first heard the second set a long time ago I thought it was Red Rocks 7/8/78 but then I was like "holy sh!t, this Estimated BLOWS 7/8/78's away! You like that Red Rocks show, you'll like this one. High Energy
1/10 & 1/11/79 Good little run at Nasau.

My two cents of for that era.....

There were actually two aud recordings here on archives.org of 5/11/78 one of which I am DL'ing now. Found the 4/16/78 on shnflac.net Thanks again everyone for your input- fun info to have handy on sites like this. So it looks like no b&ps needed for now. However, the 7/7/78 show would be worth me sending you b&p if you have the show .Have a good week.

Any ideas on that folks ?

I always have felt that 5/9/77 is the best of the historic "three night run".

Outside of that, check out 5/26/77, this is my personal favorite of 77 and I think this show in general doesn't get the credit it deserves.

7/7 & 7/8/78 are truly unique. Boasting overall tightness, effort and intensity. Die-hards might say this show is too tight, the band may have even rehearsed a few of these numbers, no complaints here. I have 2 suggestions. Although from totally different eras, I like 6-15-76(tightness and effort - 2nd set is start-to-finish gold) and 9-19-70(pure intensity). Highlight of 9-19-70 is all of it, but I really recommend St. Stephen->China Cat Jam->Lovelight. There are sooooo many great moments thoughout the history, I am certain others will have suggestions and opinions of my suggestions. Look forward to others' ideas...

1983-10-17 - Lake Placid: If nothing else, listen to the 3rd song, 2nd set, "To Lay Me Down," even if it's not a tune you normally like -- fast forward to the final chorus as the band is wailing and listen to the lightning Jerry's firing into the crowd. That one verse alone may cause you to re-examine the entire show from Sugaree through Revolution. Only time in over 350+ shows I saw people clutched hand-in-hand dancing around the entire hallway during "The Wheel." (No matter what stairway I looked up I could see them under the neon red "Exit" sign in one continous circle/wheel.) "Is it the end or beginning..." - AshesRising

10-17-83 To Lay Me Down
also a sweet guitar solo into a unique vocal melody variation ("To lie-eye WITH you...")

08-03-82 To Lay Me Down is good (Space Jam > He's Gone is priceless)

04-09-82 has the most "haunting" To Lay Me Down and the only one of these three with Brent's vocals

Jody,

1/22/78 is a clear choice. The Other One>Jerry Solo (Close Encounters)>St. Stephen melts my mind.

7/18/76 is another one. Those two (and 12/31/78, of course)may be the best of the post-hiatus Godchaux era. But you couldn't go wrong with anything from 77; try 5/9, 5/19 and 5/21 (combined DP29).

I suggest you go back even further. 72-74 contains hours upon hours of incredible music. To me, that was the golden age of the Dead, their most exploratory period. 8/27/72, 9/21/72 (now a DP), 9/28/72, 10/30/73, and 6/18/74 are just a few of the gems from those years. If you like the early, raw stuff, then 68-69 will rock your world. But maybe go later as well. 1989-91 had some incredible shows (10/9/89, 7/12/90, 9/18/90, 9/20/90, 12/31/90, 9/20/91, to name a few).

Enjoy!

Hey Jody, I gotta go w/my old stand-by:

10-29-77, Evans Fieldhouse, DeKalb, Ill.

Opening MIGHT AS WELL sets the tone for the whole show. Garcia clearly having tons o' fun belting out the lyrics...

JACK STRAW a monster...best jam into the "from Witchita" line i've ever heard.

The jams in BERTHA and GOOD LOVIN are monumental...

ESTIMATED gets the wah-wahs waaaaay out...

The EYES is groovy, jazzy, yet filled with roof-blasting riffs by Jerry...my favorite EYES of all time...

ST STEPHEN starts out like a blues number--I kid you not....the jamming is super-tight and hot all the way thru into a great rockin NFA...

BLACK PETER hits all the emotional high notes--Jerry sings it hard and beautifully..."come run and seeeeeeeee!!!!"

the SUGAR MAG is just a beast of rock and roll craziness, evidenced by Mickey and Billy going ballistic just before the SSDD coda...

and those are just a few highlights from my all time favorite show.

it combines all the best things I love about '77: Flowing, confident , tight, yet groovy, crescendos galore...such confidence in the playing, no lyrical flubs, just song after song played to Perfect Bros. perfection AND with high emotional content. Desert island show #1 for me.

Thanks- looks like a smoker! While I have a bunch naturally from 77, the 78 show just caught my ear a bit differently somehow. Hell, Jerry almost starts yodeling- its so fun to hear him at his "peak" in the post Pigpen era. Donna even sounds bearable, backing up and not barking. I'll add your suggestion to the rest of the 77's. Can you really have enough?

I agree 100%! 7/8/78 is no doubt a classic. One of those treasured shows you can put on from the opener (killer Bertha btw) to the very end and it's all awesome. I make sure to give this to friends who have never heard it, and they always give great feedback. One of my fiends HATES Sugar Mags but gave this one a try and enjoyed the hell out of it.

Some of my other favorites that go under the radar are 11/9/79 (one of my favorite 2nd sets ever, and a personal top 3 Jack Straw, I'm a Jack Straw whore for the record). I'll reinforce a previous post of 4/16/78, the band was so in tune that night, and a very unique style of play during that month. 12/28/79, a well-known classic. One of the best sounding recordings period, and an A++ performance. And don't forget 11/6/77, I've played the 1st set hundreds of times. The Mexacali > My Uncle says it all. Another 77 show that has a unique feel are both shows in Portland, OR 10/1 & 10/2/77. They played super loose and make each song sound completely new.

Hope this helps! And bring back the boards for us!!!
