[audio]Mississippi John Hurt-Avalon Blues - Mississippi John Hurt
Recorded on December 21, 1928 in New York City. After this recording session Hurt went back home to his home in Northwestern Mississippi and did not record again until over 30 years later. He "disappeared" until Tom Hoskins "re-discovered" him earning $28 a month on a cattle farm in the early sixties. The clue to finding Hurt was in this tune: "Avalon's my home town, always on my mind." After his "re-discovery," Hurt became popular with the folkie crowd in the sixties.

[audio]Charleston (Fox Trot) - Golden Gate Orchestra
This was the song of the 1920's it was a dance, a song, an idea, and also for many in the 1920's a way of life. The song seems to move us to the days of speakeasy's and the wild ride that became the roaring 20's.

[audio]Dick Justice-Cocaine - Dick Justice
Recorded on May 20, 1929 in Chicago. Justice was a contemporary of Frank Hutchison, where he evidently worked in the mines with Hutchison and played music with him. This tune was recorded by Luke Jordan in 1927 as "Cocaine Blues" (not to be confused with "Cocaine Habit Blues" recorded by the Memphis Jug Band). This tune is one of most surreal in old-time country. While there are clear references to the partaking of the white stuff, there is also seemingly unrelated commentary about a man who liv...
