![[audio]](/images/mediatype_audio.gif) | Postcards: Fourth of July [sw06] - Jesse Jarnow As shaman-in-residence at Boulder, Colorado's Naropa Institute, folk archivist/alchemist/animator Harry Smith once recorded the entirety of his Fourth of July, from fireworks to crickets. Here are two mono-recorded excerpts of Independence Day 2007. Sounds in the field include the distant bells and marching drums of a parade, siren blasts, low-flying airplanes, a layer of constant bird chatter, and breaking ocean waves... ![[audio]](/images/mediatype_audio.gif) | Postcards: Consumer Electronics Show [sw05] - Funny Cry Happy Postcards: Consumer Electronics Show is comprised of unaltered, binaural field recordings made at the 2006 edition of the country's largest trade show. Over 150,000 non-consumers -- vendors, buyers, celebrities, quasi-celebrities, execs -- filled 1.6 million miles of floor space of the Las Vegas Convention Center, hawking the latest and greatest in all things beepy. 1. ![[audio]](/images/mediatype_audio.gif) | On A Clear Night, You Can Smell For Miles [sw03] - Funny Cry Happy The second full-length from Brooklyn's Funny Cry Happy. Infectiously surreal folk strums set atop an ever-shifting psychedelic sound field of bells, banjos, birds, radio static, recordings made in a tunnel under a highway in Boulder, reconstructed trumpets, accordion, uke, dubbed snares, organ drones, the ever-present toy piano, and whatever else was lying around. The kitchen sink was left off this time (though was included on FCH's self-titled 2002 debut). Keywords: Experimental Downloads: 12,841 Average rating: (0 review) |
![[audio]](/images/mediatype_audio.gif) | Postcards: Atlantic City EP [sw02] - Funny Cry Happy Casinos are tuned to the key of C. Slot machine bleeps, video poker blurps, the pings that come before public announcements -- all in C. The sum total is a surprisingly warm hum, designed to keep gamblers hypnotized. Like the lack of natural light, the absence of clocks, and the recycled air, it is one of the many surreal environmental features of our nation's gambling halls.
