[audio]Vera Lynn w. The Casini Club Orchestra-I'm In The Mood For Love - Vera Lynn w. the Casini Club Orchestra
Recorded in October, 1935, most likely somewhere in England. This was Vera Lynn's first commercial recording. Lynn was much loved by the British because of her selfless efforts entertaining the troops during WWII. Indeed she was so popular that, according to myth, a commedian once cracked that the war was was started by her agent. Today, I think she is best known for her stirring performance of "We'll Meet Again" during the final scene of Dr...

[audio]Leo Soileau & Meus LaFleur-Chere Mom - Leo Soileau & Meus LaFleur
recorded on October 18, 1928 in Atlanta, Georgia with Leo Soileau on the fiddle and Meus LaFleur on vocals and accordion. The tune expresses LaFleur's wish to see his mother one more time before he dies, inasmuch as LaFleur's mother had abandoned him when he was an infant. Legend has it that LaFleur was going to use the money he earned at the recording session to find her. However, 9 days later, LaFleur was gunned down at a honky tonk.

[audio]Clarence Ashley-The House Carpenter - Clarence Ashley
Recorded on April 14, 1930 in Atlanta, Georgia. This ballad was collected by Child as "The Daemon Lover" (Child No. 243), of which there are several variants. Harry Smith noted that the original version in the British Isles had a "supernatural theme" which didn't make it to North America.

[audio]Frank Hutchison-The Last Scene Of The Titanic - Frank Hutchison
Recorded on April 29, 1927 in St. Louis. The story of the Titanic made a deep impression on people and was the subject of several ballads and tunes. Thus, versions of tunes about the Titanic were recorded by Ray Acuff, Ernest Stoneman, Blind Willie Johnson ("God Moves On The Water"), William & Versey Smith ("When That Great Ship Went Down"), among others. According to Jeff Place, the story of the Titanic "was particularly important to African-American musicians who were strongly aware of the iro...

[audio]Bascom Lamar Lunsford-I Wish I Was A Mole In The Ground - Bascom Lamar Lunsford
Recorded in April 1928 in Ashland, Kentucky. Another banjo tune with lyrics that could be from any one of a number of tunes, and which have no apparent logical relationship with each other. This particular tune, which became a folkie staple during the Great Folk Scare, is related to tunes known as "Tempie," "Darling Where Have You Been So Long," "Sammie, Where Have You Been So Long," and "I Don't Like No Railroad Man." In "When We Were Good: The Folk Revival" Robert Cantwell says: "Listen to 'I ...

[audio]Bessie Mae Smith-He Treats Me Like A Dog - Bessie Mae Smith
Recorded circa November 6, 1930. Bob Hall posits that Bessie Mae may have also recorded under the names St. Louis Bessie, Blue Belle, Streamline Mae, and/or Mae Belle Miller. It is possible she may have also been the common-law spouse of bluesman Big Joe Williams. Hall also believes that the piano accompaniment on this track might be Roosevelt "The Honeydripper" Sykes. The lyrics of this tune leave little to the imagination regarding the singer's current relationship.

Recorded circa March 1931 in Grafton, Wisconsin. Geeshie Wiley on vocals and lead guitar, Elvie Thomas on second guitar. [audio]Charlie Poole & The North Carolina Ramblers-Shootin' Creek - Charlie Poole & The North Carolina Ramblers
Reorded on July 23, 1928. This tune is clearly related, if not the same tune, to the old-timey and bluegrass standard "Cripple Creek." Alan Jabbour has speculated that the "Cripple Creek" title may be related to certain labor disputes in the Cripple Creek area of Colorado during 1903 and 1904. On the other hand, a Cripple Creek flows through Grayson and Carroll Counties in Southwest Virginia. As for the title "Shootin' Creek," there exists a Shooting Creek region in Franklin County also in South...

[audio]Mississippi John Hurt-Avalon Blues - Mississippi John Hurt
Recorded on December 21, 1928 in New York City. After this recording session Hurt went back home to his home in Northwestern Mississippi and did not record again until over 30 years later. He "disappeared" until Tom Hoskins "re-discovered" him earning $28 a month on a cattle farm in the early sixties. The clue to finding Hurt was in this tune: "Avalon's my home town, always on my mind." After his "re-discovery," Hurt became popular with the folkie crowd in the sixties.
