[audio]Comedian Harmonists-31-40 - Comedian Harmonists
The Beginning Their story began in 1927, when 20-year-old acting student Harry Frommermann put an ad in the Berlin newspaper Berliner Lokalanzeiger shortly after Christmas 1927 to found a singing group. The Comedian Harmonists were a German singing sensation of the 1920s and '30s. The elegant sextet, five vocalists and a pianist -- all dressed in tails, had a repertoire that encompassed many vocal styles, ranging from folk songs to sentimental hits accompanied by banter and even silliness on sta...

[audio]Fred Van Eps - Pearl Of The Harem - Fred Van Eps
Harry P. Guy composed "Pearl of the Harem", an "Oriental Two-Step", in 1901. The tune had been in circulation for over a decade when Fred Van Eps recorded his banjo version in June of 1911. It's a nice tune, and a very nice performance by Van Eps, with his old-fashioned, percussive playing style. From 78rpm disk.

[audio]Harry McClintock-Hallelujah! I'm A Bum - Harry McClintock
Recorded in 1926. This tune is a parody of an old Salvation Army tune called "Revive Us Again." It is often attributed to Wobbly organizer Joe Hill, however, Harry McClintock (aka Haywire Mac), who also was a member of the Industrial Workers of the World, has also claimed authorship. McClintock is best known for his recording of "Big Rock Candy Mountain."

[audio]Dr Clarence Penney - Toots - Dr Clarence Penney
Hot ragtime mandolin by Dr. Clarence Penney, "Toots - One-Step" was recorded on August 31, 1914. The piano accompaniment is by Felix Arndt, who also composed "Toots". Although banjo is the more usual instrument in ragtime recordings, the mandolin was also used, and this is a good example of the genre. From the original 78rpm disk.
