| Sleepy John Estes-Black Mattie Blues - Sleepy John Estes
Recorded on October 2, 1929. John Estes received the nickname "Sleepy" as a result of a baseball accident he received as a child which caused him to lose the sight of his right eye. In addition to his blues style, Estes also recorded jug band tunes with the likes of Jab Jones and, most importantly, mandolinist Yank Rachell. Rachell, who had a life long musical relationship with Estes, abundantly demonstrates that the blues is not relegated exclusively to guitar playing.

This "song" is a frankensteinian hybridic mixture of two previously uploaded open source audio recordings: the colorado river (frogs!) field recordings and Clarence Ashley's, "my sweet farm girl". I finagled it around a bit to get it to sound interesting to say the least. I got it so the frogs seem to be singing along at times. :)

Recorded on July 29 1927 at Bristol, Tennessee during the famous Bristol Sessions where Jimmie Rodgers and the Carter Family made their first recordings. This version of "Pretty Polly" is just one of the many turns on the "murdered girlfriend" ballad. Banjo players who play these sordid little tunes tend to tune their instrument to a modal tuning. Some researchers have held the belief that "Pretty Polly" is a shortened variation of another ballad called "The Gosport Tragedy."
