[audio]Mississippi John Hurt-Avalon Blues - Mississippi John Hurt
Recorded on December 21, 1928 in New York City. After this recording session Hurt went back home to his home in Northwestern Mississippi and did not record again until over 30 years later. He "disappeared" until Tom Hoskins "re-discovered" him earning $28 a month on a cattle farm in the early sixties. The clue to finding Hurt was in this tune: "Avalon's my home town, always on my mind." After his "re-discovery," Hurt became popular with the folkie crowd in the sixties.

[audio]Son House-My Black Mama Part One - Son House
Recorded in June 1930 in Grafton, Wisconsin. These recording sessions included Charley Patton, Willie Brown and Louise Johnson who all drove up to Wisconsin together from Mississippi. This tune made a deep impression on a young Robert Johnson, who was reportedly mentored somewhat by House; Johnson later recorded this tune as "Walkin' Blues." John Lee Hooker likewise did his own version in 1949 called "Burnin' Hell," based on the lines from the third verse: "Yeah, ain't no heaven, ain't no burnin...

[audio]Sleepy John Estes-Black Mattie Blues - Sleepy John Estes
Recorded on October 2, 1929. John Estes received the nickname "Sleepy" as a result of a baseball accident he received as a child which caused him to lose the sight of his right eye. In addition to his blues style, Estes also recorded jug band tunes with the likes of Jab Jones and, most importantly, mandolinist Yank Rachell. Rachell, who had a life long musical relationship with Estes, abundantly demonstrates that the blues is not relegated exclusively to guitar playing.

Recorded on December 21, 1928 in New York City. Hurt said, when asked about this sweet murder ballad, that he "made it up from hearing people talk. He was a great man, I know that, and he was killed by two men named Bob and Louis. I got enough of the story to write me a song."

[audio]Garfield Akers & Joe Calicott-Cottonfield Blues Part Two - Garfield Akers & Joe Calicott
See entry for "Cottonfield Blues Part One." Because of the limited capacity of the discs which were used for recording in this era, tunes that exceeded a little over three minutes often were continued on the flip side of a 78rpm record.

[audio]Victoria Spivey-Dope Head Blues - Victoria Spivey
Recorded on October 28, 1927 in New York City with blues great Lonnie Johnson on guitar. This tune is about the ravages and paranoia that accompanies cocaine addiction with the chilling lyrics: "Got double pneumonia and still I think I got the best health." Spivey was one of the great blues jazz singers of the twenties and thirties. She recorded with Louis Armstrong and King Oliver. She even had a part in King Vidor's "Hallelujah" in 1929, one of the first, if not the first, films with an all-bl...

[audio]Henry Thomas-Bob McKinney - Henry Thomas
Recorded on October 5, 1927. Henry Thomas is one of the more elusive figures of old-time music and his music is difficult to categorize being neither entirely country blues nor old-time country. [audio]Bertha Lee w. Charley Patton-Mind Reader Blues - Bertha Lee w. Charley Patton
Recorded on January 31, 1934 in New York City. This tune, along with "Yellow Bee," was recorded at Patton's last recording session. He died two months later. Bertha Lee was Patton's common-law wife at the time. Lee appears to be lecturing Patton, who was an inveterate womanizer, with her sultry voice. In the fourth verse Lee sings: "I remember a day when I were livin' at Lula town, I remember a day when I were livin' at Lula town, my man did so many wrong things 'til I had to leave the town." [audio]Blind Willie Johnson-Mother's Children Have A Hard Time - Blind Willie Johnson
Recorded on December 3, 1927 in Dallas, Texas. The title of this tune was a garbled translation of someone trying to decipher Johnson's singing, the title should have been "Motherless Children Have A Hard Time." Indeed, it is reputed that Johnson was blinded as a child by his stepmother in a fit of anger after she was discovered in bed with another man by Johnson's father, who then beat her.

[audio]The Nugrape Twins-I Got Your Ice Cold Nugrape - The Nugrape Twins
Recorded on November 2, 1926. Not much is known about the Nugrape Twins. Based on their few recordings, they might have been a gospel group. This recording may have been a plug for Nugrape, a soda pop popular in the South similar to Orange Crush. Only different.

[audio]Ernest Rodgers-Willie The Chimney Sweeper - Ernest Rodgers
Recorded in 1927. This same tune was recorded at about the same time by Frankie "Half Pint" Jaxon, well known at the time for his tunes full of innuendo (not to mention his parallel career as a female impersonator), as "Willie The Weeper." These tunes may be the earliest known "reefer" tunes in American popular culture (with the exception of "La Cucaracha"). The references to "smoking pills" in these "Willie" tunes isn't that strange when it is taken into consideration that drug vernacular at th...

[audio]Bertha Lee w. Charley Patton-Yellow Bee - Bertha Lee w. Charley Patton
Recorded on January 31, 1934 in New York City. This tune was originally made popular by Memphis Minnie. The tune is clearly sexual in nature, and from Patton's asides during the tune, it appears that Patton is certainly enjoying Lee's come on. It is thought that Patton and Lee recorded several other tunes during this last recording session. See the notes to "Mind Reader Blues." However, if they did, they are lost and haven't been heard...by anyone still alive that is...

[audio]Tommy Johnson-Canned Heat Blues - Tommy Johnson
Recorded on August 31, 1928 in Memphis, Tennessee. Tommy Johnson was a contemporary of Charlie Patton and it is believed that he, along with other blues musicians from the Mississippi Delta area, exchanged ideas and tunes with Patton. "Canned Heat" referred to any one of a number of concoctions based on alcohol found in shoe polish, cooking fuel, etc., which it is believed Johnson had a liking for.

[audio]Dock Boggs-Country Blues - Dock Boggs
Recorded in 1927 in New York City. Jon Pankake wrote "[t]he haunted dissonance of Boggs' banjo playing and the harsh, overpowering emotion of his singing together with the bleakness of the vision expressed in his songs caused me to rethink my notion of 'folk music,' which hitherto I had associated with Pete Seeger's optimism and cheerful, bouncing banjo." This tune belongs to the same family of so-called blues ballads as "Hustling Gamblers" and "Darling Cory."
