[audio]Confessio Amantis - John Gower
A classic collection of tales in poetic form about the seven deadly sins, written in Middle English. Why an audiobook? Because I've never read this classic, and neither have most people. Great poets should be more than just names to us. In this audiobook I attempt Middle English pronunciation, albeit not with entire success. But at least it shouldn't be any harder to understand than your average English speaker with a thick accent...

[audio]"The Sewing Bird" - Fitz-James O'Brien
O'Brien knew London and Paris, where shopgirls were common. But in New York, the stores only employed salesmen, even in departments selling exclusively to women. The work was seen as too hard for women -- but slaving as seamstresses was not. O'Brien protests this injustice in a witty fantasy about a labor-saving fabric clamp (the eponymous Sewing Bird) come alive.

[audio]"Horatius", from Lays of Ancient Rome - Thomas Babington Macaulay
You've seen literary references to Horatius at the Bridge and Volaterrae and "Lars Porsena of Clusium, to the Nine Gods he swore", but they don't make folks read that in school anymore. So why not read it for yourself? This is fun stuff! The idea behind Lays of Ancient Rome was to recreate (for fun and education) the sort of pre-classical ballad poetry that we know the republican Romans had. Whether or not it's anything like that, it's certainly good historical fiction and good rousing poetry.

[audio]"Hymn for the Lighting of the Lamps" - Aurelius Clemens Prudentius (Tr. by R. Martin Pope)
Prudentius, a Christian Roman poet from Spain, wrote several books of poems and hymns. This one is from the Liber Cathemerinon, a book of hymns for various hours and holy days. Bonus tracks are included: "Inventor Rutili", a Latin chant hymn drawn from the first 12 lines of the "Hymn for the Lighting of the Lamps", both in Latin and English. Also, "Hymn for the Burial of the Dead".

[audio]"Lepanto" - G.K. Chesterton
"Lepanto" was written when Chesterton was still in school. It tells about the Battle of Lepanto, in which the vastly outnumbered Holy League, led by an illegimately born prince, beat the Ottoman Empire's galleys, thus helping change the course of history. It also refers to the historical fact that Cervantes, once a prisoner in the Ottoman galleys, fought in the great and chivalrous Battle of Lepanto.....

[audio]"A Soldier's Letter" - Fitz-James O'Brien
Printed in March 1862 (about the time it would take to get such a letter written in January), this poem was one of the last things ever written by Fitz-James O'Brien. It's full of Victorian sentiment, but it also uses that in a rather clever way. It also tells a pretty good story. O'Brien was wounded in a skirmish on February 26, 1862, and died of complications from his wounds on April 6, 1862.

[audio]Pharsalia (aka The Civil War) - Marcus Annaeus Lucanus (Lucan)
An epic poem about the tragic Roman civil war between Julius Caesar and Pompeius (Pompey), which also figuratively chronicles Lucan's own realization that his good friend, patron, and new emperor, Nero, has become a danger to his people. The poem ends prematurely, because Lucan was executed for plotting to overthrow Nero. Immensely influential to Western civilization and a true classic, though sadly forgotten over the last hundred years (when folks should have read it)...

[audio]Gerusalemme Liberata (Jerusalem Freed), Part 2 - Torquato Tasso
The classic poem continues with more fantasy Crusade adventure, as the siege of Jerusalem begins and one of the most prominent Crusaders is killed with a sharp piece of irony. A courtly love triangle from afar is revealed: the Christian knight Tancred, the Saracen lady knight Clorinda, and Erminia, the exiled Saracen princess of Antioch. Meanwhile, the wizard king of Damascus sends his niece, the lovely witch Armida, to seduce and destroy the Crusaders by any means possible...

An epic poem and piece of historical fiction set during the First Crusade. This is considered one of the three great Italian epic poems, along with Dante's Divine Comedy and Ariosto's Orlando Furioso. The poem primarily focuses on Rinaldo and his hopeless love for a Saracen woman warrior, and on many historical personages made more romantic. [audio]TrenchJustinMartyr - Richard Chenevix Trench
This poem is ostensibly a story about Justin Martyr's mysterious conversation near the seashore with an old man he'd never seen before and never saw again, as he related it in the book Dialogue with Trypho. However, since the general concerns of the character of Justin in this poem are not those in Justin's book, this is probably an autobiographical poem im disguise. Richard Chenevix Trench (1807-1886) was an Anglican clergyman who ended up as archbishop of Dublin...
