[image]Well-head Flare, Calanscio Sand Sea, Libya - Astronaut photograph
A plume of black smoke blowing westward is silhouetted against linear dunes in the great sand sea of northeast Libya. Smoke from flares at remote well heads is commonly seen by astronauts flying over the Sahara Desert. The plume dispersal pattern visible at the left edge of the image may be due to upper-level winds or gravitational settling of heavier particulates. The regular pattern of linear dunes is generated by two major winds: the dominant north wind (north is towards the top right) determi...

A thick cloud of Saharan dust was swept off the coast of Libya out over the Mediterranean Sea on April 26, 2004. Ripples on the wind have created the intricate wave patterns seen in this thick plume of dust over Egypt and Libya. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite captured this image on February 28, 2005, just as a strong gust of wind pulled a streamer of dust out over the Mediterranean Sea. This dust storm started on February 28, and continued through at least March 2...

Clouds of tan dust linger over the Mediterranean Sea off of Libya. A strong dust storm swept thick curtains of Saharan dust out over the Sea and into Italy. By February 23, 2004, when the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the Terra satellite captured this image, only traces of the storm remained. The wind still appears to be blowing a little dust into the Sea, most obviously in eastern Libya, image right...
