[texts]Ideas, Part I - Edmund Husserl
Edmund Husserl Ideas, Volume One.(1913) Translated into English. This work is the true foundation of phenomenology as the transcendental science of pure consciousness; it becomes the foundational science of all sciences, allegedly replacing all metaphysics, or "first philosophy". Husserl struggled with and profoundly explored the Cartesian postulate of the ego, single-mindedly probing its enigmatic conundrums in an effort to give a perfectly lucid and precise account of what philosophic man is.

[texts]Leo Strauss - Gadamer Correspondence [Truth and Method, 1961] - Hans-Georg Gadamer, Leo Strauss
Discussions regarding hermeneutics, historicism, and the possibility of philosophy between Strauss and Gadamer. The implication of Martin Heidegger's thought for these fundamental themes is taken up in relation to Gadamer's own "Wahrheit und Methode" (Truth and Method). Gadamer later addressed these issues specifically, as a result of this correspondence. Originally published in a continental journal of philosophy, it is today rare and difficult to obtain.

[texts]Martin Heidegger - Der Spiegel Interview 1966 (English translation): - Martin Heidegger (interview 1966)
This is the famous "Der Spiegel Interview" from 1966 in which Heidegger discusses the current crisis of nihilism and his rejection of some kind of fusion of East and West. A return to, and a resuscitation of the Western Tradition is here anticipated as essential. Heidegger also here gives some further information which may help one to think about his motives in 1933 and thereafter. It is suggested that this piece be read in conjunction with the essay "On Existentialism", by Leo Strauss, also ava...

[texts]Martin Heidegger - The Self Assertion of the German University 1933 - Martin Heidegger
Martin Heidegger's [in]famous "Rectoratsrede" or "Rector's inaugural address", given in 1933. A careful reading of this speech is essential for anyone trying to understand the early philosophy of Heidegger, and why he eventually withdrew from politics. Leo Strauss' essays entitled "Existentialism" and "German Nihilism" should be read in conjunction with this speech.

[texts]Strauss on Heidegger: 5 crucial texts - Leo Strauss
A group of essays written by Leo Strauss, originally published separately. These essays confront either explicitly or indirectly the radical historicism of Martin Heidegger. Strauss presents the classical idea of the philosophic life over against Heidegger's committed and spirited kind of "thinking" and his conscientious, single minded reflections on man's finitude and the abyss (i.e. Dasein, authentically experienced)...

[texts]Leo Strauss - Restatement on Xenophon's Heiro - Leo Strauss (1899-1973)
This is the famous "Restatement" that discusses most directly the meaning of the philosophic life as opposed to all other human forms of association and activity. It was written as a "reply" to the friendly criticisms of Alexander Kojeve, who was the thinker responsible for the popular fusion of Hegel, Nietzsche, & Heidegger, popularized by Sartre's "Marxism". Included in this copy is the original final paragraph, excluded from the American edition, addressing the obscurantism and demagoguery im...
