To say “we have been deeply affected” by the situation in Iraq is an “understatement,” said Rick McCutcheon at a 15 May 2001 Center briefing. McCutcheon and Tamara Fleming spoke about their year-long relief work in Iraq with the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) and Mennonite Central Committee (MCC), from which they returned a month earlier. McCutcheon and Fleming, both Canadians, were among the few western NGO workers permitted to live in Baghdad during the past few years.
