Jean-Louis LeRoux conducts the Mills Performing Group with soloists Madeleine Milhaud, Naomi Sparrow and Betty Woo. The first selection heard, “La muse ménagère”, was played as people were still entering the music hall and therefore there is a bit of crowd noise, and the actual performer is uncertain. He shares a certain dryness, and a dislike for sensual elements in his music, with such other Swiss composers as Honneger and Martin. In fact, his early works reject harmonic considerations almost entirely, in favor of contrapuntal techniques; although his later work represents a softening of this attitude. The “Mass” for soprano, bass, chorus, and small orchestra, written in 1951, is one of his most mature works...
