[image]Fires in South Asia - NASA image by Jeff Schmaltz,
In the hilly terrain of northeastern India and northwestern Myanmar, people practice slash-and-burn cultivation in the region’s tropical forests. The activity has created a mosaic of cleared fields and open-canopy forests in various stages of regrowth. This image of the area was captured by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite on March 10, 2006, during the burning season, which takes places mostly in February and March...

Widespread agricultural (slash-and-burn) fires across northeastern India and Myanmar on the afternoon of March 20, 2006, left a shroud of smoke hanging over the landscape the following morning. These images of the area were captured by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra (March 21) and Aqua (March 20) satellites. Fires have been burning throughout the region since February, as people prepare for spring planting...

Scores of fires were burning in northeastern India, Myanmar, and Thailand on February 27, 2006. Agricultural fires commonly occur here in the late winter (Northern Hemisphere), as farmers clear fields to prepare for new planting. Although agricultural fires are not necessarily immediately hazardous, such large-scale burning can have a strong impact on weather, climate, human health, and natural resources...

In Southeast Asia, thousands of fires were spread across Myanmar and Thailand on March 22, 2004. In this image from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the Aqua satellite, fires have been marked in yellow. The smoke from the fires can be seen clearly against a backdrop of low clouds over the eastern half of the scene. [image]Internal waves in the Andaman Sea off Myanmar - Jacques Descloitres, MODIS Rapid Response Team, NASA/GSFC
The silvery reflection of the sun on the surface of the Andaman Sea reveals the internal waves that are common in this region. The waves form when the dense, lower layer of the ocean moves over an uneven section of the sea floor. The wave that results from the disturbance travels between the dense layer and the light layer of water above it, and ruffles the surface of the sea. Because the waves create large regions of alternating rough and smooth sea, they are visible from space...
