[image]Athabasca Valles
Dazzled by the beauty of the strange features in the Athabasca Valles channel system on Mars, geologist Windy Jaeger pondered their origin. In a new paper, she concludes that lava filled the channel system to the brim and then drained away leaving a thin coating of hard lava rock to preserve the underlying landscape. Other unique features indicating that massive lava flows once filled the channels are hydrovolcanic cones that formed when water met lava and boiled explosively, leaving behind smal...

[image]SHARAD
Sometimes eye doctors need only to make slight adjustments to lenses to help one's vision improve. Scientists on Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter's SHARAD (shallow radar) team asked spacecraft engineers to roll the orbiter about 25 degrees. By doing so, the radar team has managed to obtain even higher sensitivity from the instrument as it is shown in the "after" image. The team does not expect to perform these spacecraft rolls routinely but they will not miss the chance if one comes along to "see" th...

[image]Rock Layers Exposed by Wind
Erosion has exposed light-toned, layered rocks on the northern rim of Hellas Basin, the largest impact crater on Mars. Details in the layering seen in this image from the High-Resolution Imaging Science Experiment reveal variations in brightness that may indicate differing mineralogies. [image]New View of Dark Pit on Arsia Mons
The High Resolution Imaging Experiment (HiRISE) camera on NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter has confirmed that a dark pit seen on Mars in an earlier HiRISE image really is a vertical shaft that cuts through lava flow on the flank of the Arsia Mons volcano. Such pits form on similar volcanoes in Hawaii and are called "pit craters." This view, a small portion of a HiRISE image taken on Aug. 9, 2007, shows a dark pit about 150 meters (492 feet) in diameter set in a lava flow...

[image]Icy Dunes
Conspicuous dark streaks atop icy dunes on Mars allure scientists and non-scientists, yet their origin remains a mystery. Perhaps they are small avalanches or patches of sand covered by a thin veneer of ice. Perhaps they formed when cold gas jets of evaporating ice spewed dust onto the surface. Imagine being able to point a camera at such features from 60 million miles away! Students in Budapest, Hungary effectively did that, selecting this site for observation from orbit through a program that ...

[image]CRISM
Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter is an overachiever! About six months into its science-gathering phase and the orbiter has already returned 11 Terabits of data - that's enough to fill over 2,000 CDs! The total goal for the mission lifetime is 34 Terabits. Among the impressive data are images from the orbiter's Compact Reconnaissance Imaging Spectrometer for Mars (CRISM) instrument. With CRISM, the science team intends to investigate the entire red planet in spectral mode at a resolution of 200 meters...

[image]Lava-Draped Channel System on Mars
This image shows a portion of the Athabasca Valles channel system. Part of a streamlined "island" is visible on the right, and dune-like landforms that occur on the channel floor can be seen on the left. At higher resolution it is apparent that a thin layer of solidified lava coats both the dune-like landforms and the topographically higher streamlined island. Two impact craters within the subscene can be identified by the relatively bright-rayed ejecta that surround them...

[image]Pathfinder
This image shows the Pathfinder lander on the surface. Zooming in, one can discern the ramps, science deck, and portions of the airbags on the Pathfinder lander. (See next image for closer view.) The back shell and parachute are to the south, and four features that may be portions of the heat shield are identified. Two of these were visible from Pathfinder. At the time of that mission, the nearest object was provisionally identified as the back shell...

[image]Opportunity 3 Step Movie
The High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment on NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter imaged Opportunity on Oct. 3, Nov. 4 and Nov. 30, 2006. Each time the rover was in a different location as it progressed around "Victoria Crater." The remainder of the scene is unchanged, except that the shadows are slightly different given variations in the time of year and time of day between images. Also, each image was acquired with slightly different viewing geometries: the orbiter was pointed 3.84 degrees ...

The High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment on NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter has imaged "Victoria Crater" three times. This stereo view combines two of those views. The red-colored image is TRA_000873_1780 and was acquired with the orbiter pointed 3.84 degrees to the west. The blue-color image is PSP_001414_1780 and was acquired with the orbiter pointed 16.2 degrees to the west. [image]Victoria Crater' at Meridiani Planum (Annotated)
This image from the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment on NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter shows "Victoria crater," an impact crater at Meridiani Planum, near the equator of Mars. The crater is approximately 800 meters (half a mile) in diameter. It has a distinctive scalloped shape to its rim, caused by erosion and downhill movement of crater wall material. Layered sedimentary rocks are exposed along the inner wall of the crater, and boulders that have fallen from the crater wall are v...

Area "d" of the image shows the current location of Spirit. Toward the top of the image is "Home Plate," a plateau of layered rocks that Spirit explored during the early part of its third year on Mars. Spirit itself is clearly seen just southeast of Home Plate. Also visible are the tracks made by the rover before it arrived at its current location. [image]Viking Lander 1 (Thomas A. Mutch Memorial Station) Imaged from Orbit
NASA's Viking Lander 1 touched down in western Chryse Planitia on July 20, 1976. The lander, which has a diameter of about 3 meters (10 feet), has been precisely located in this image from the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment camera on NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. Also, likely locations have been found for the heat shield, back shell, and parachute attached to the back shell. The lander location has been confirmed by overlaying the lander-derived topographic contours on the high...

[image]Viking Lander 2 (Gerald A. Soffen Memorial Station) Imaged from Orbit
As chance would have it, this image is blurred in some places due to the abrupt motion associated with the restart of the orbiter's high-gain antenna tracking during the very short image exposure. This is the first time after acquiring hundreds of pictures that a High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment image has been unintentionally smeared; overall performance has been excellent. A prime motivation for early viewing of the Viking sites is to calibrate imagery taken from orbit with the data p...
