Harry P. Guy composed "Pearl of the Harem", an "Oriental Two-Step", in 1901. The tune had been in circulation for over a decade when Fred Van Eps recorded his banjo version in June of 1911. It's a nice tune, and a very nice performance by Van Eps, with his old-fashioned, percussive playing style. From 78rpm disk.

[audio]Victor Military Band - The Memphis Blues - Victor Military Band
W.C. Handy's first success, The Memphis Blues, composed in 1912, which started the first blues craze in the early 1910s (although not what we think of as Blues today). As far as I know this is the first commercial recording of The Memphis Blues, dating from July of 1914. It includes the first strain, which was dropped from the later vocal version (which is not by Handy). From the original 78rpm disk.

A weird little rag-ish thing in C minor. Well, it's sort of C major, too. Mostly improvised, but I cheated a bit on this one, too - the first two bars have been playing in my head for a while now. Kind of obnoxious, huh?

Hot ragtime mandolin by Dr. Clarence Penney, "Toots - One-Step" was recorded on August 31, 1914. The piano accompaniment is by Felix Arndt, who also composed "Toots". Although banjo is the more usual instrument in ragtime recordings, the mandolin was also used, and this is a good example of the genre. From the original 78rpm disk.

[audio]Joseph Moskowitz - Panama Pacific Drag - Joseph Moskowitz
The record label describes this performance as a "Cembalom solo (Also Called 'Cembalo', 'Cymbal', and 'Dulcimer')". This is the large, central European-style hammered instrument rather than the smaller rural American-style dulcimer. Joseph Moskowitz was a Romanian immigrant who made his living by playing cymbalom in his own and other's restaurants in New York and Washington DC. One source says this piece is from an early Broadway production called "The Passing Show of 1915"...

[audio]Frog Legs: Ragtime Era Favorites - Various Artists
This Kazoomzoom.com collection focuses on ragtime, an American music style from more than 100 years ago, a long time before the invention of CDs and iPods. Back then, sound was recorded into things like wax, resin, paper and metal. The paper recordings were played by instrument machines. The most popular was called a player piano, and most of the songs here are recorded from player pianos. Ragtime's uplifting and whimsical style is perfect as a happy and inspiring backdrop for playtime. For more ...

The Louisiana Five Jazz Orchestra was one of the first New Orleans jazz bands to record, making their first records in 1918. The band's sound is dominated by the clarinet of Alcide "Yellow" Nunez and Charlie Panelli's trombone. Uncharacteristically, this recording also includes a part for cornet.
