	YeastLur-excerpt - stephen barrass This sonification was designed for the Sonification contest at ICAD 2009 in Copenhagen. This sonification explores the intersection of functional and aesthetic aspects of sonification. The functional design uses an emergent motif to signify the start codon. The aesthetic design includes the choice of the Lur (a viking instrument), and the introduction of pauses for musical effect modelled on a piece of Lur music composed and played by Odd Sylvarnes Lund. 	DNA for 9 Ubangs - Kiss-Kiss-Bang-Bang This piece was composed from the aligned DNA sequences of nine different species that included vegetables, amphibians, marsupials and primates. The nine aligned DNA sequences were arranged in parallel to create a polyrhythmic percussion performance on the ubang. 	RiverAndRain - stephen barrass Sonifications of 365 days of rainfall in Sydney from March 2008 to Feb 2009. These were made with a MIDI device. The first rendering is a music metaphor using the rising pitch of notes on a Bassoon. The second is a rainfall metaphor produced by inversely mapping the pitch of the applause sound from the MIDI palette to produce lower notes and thunder-ish effects at very large downpours, and softer higher pitched noises for sprinkling showers.
