[audio]Ode to Gravity: Word-Tape Works and Music
From 1970, a program of word-tape compositions by Steve Reich and Charles Amirkhanian. During the 1960s and 70s a number of composers and poets began to experiment with tape editing techniques to create text-sound compositions in which fragments of text were cut-up, repeated, or otherwise manipulated in order to create a new synthesis between speech and sound. A selection of these works of sound poetry are presented here...

[audio]Ode To Gravity: The Music of Steve Reich
Charles Amirkhanian interviews composer Steve Reich in May of 1980. The interview begins with Reich giving a brief description of his childhood experiences as a piano student and member of a school band. He then plays two recordings of his “Music for a Large Ensemble”, highlighting the ways in which he revises a piece based on his ability to rehearse it, explaining that he always prefers to work with his own ensemble, perfecting a piece, before allowing it to be played by others...

[audio]The_Tonal_System - Greg Fox
Twelve notes are repeated endlessly in the void. Their dominance is determined by their place in the tonal hierarchy of conventional music. Thus deterministic chromatic systems emulate without stylistic bias the overall statistical flavour of the tonal system.

[audio]Ode to Gravity: Survival of the Fiddle - Music by Steve Reich & Michael Sahl
Two avant-garde works for violin, played by one of the world’s leading artists, Paul Zukofsky. In a Mitzvah for the Dead (for Violin and Tape), Michael Sahl has written a piece in four movements which recalls tonal music as a possibility for usage in not merely collage snippets, but as an important element basic to the conception of the work. In the second work, Violin Phase by Steve Reich, the composer takes samples of sound and subjects them to a sort of magnification that provides the liste...

[audio]Steve Reich - Piano Phase (performed by Peter Aidu) [top09] - top-40.org
In 1967, Steve Reich composed a "Piano Phase", a piece of music for two pianos. It was his first attempt at applying the phasing technique to live performance. Two pianists are playing a rapid twelve-note melodic figure over and over again in unison. As one player precisely keeps the tempo, the other speeds up very slightly until the two parts line up again, but one sixteenth note apart. The second player then resumes the previous tempo...
