| World Ear Project: Sounds from the Village of Ruski Krstur
Recorded in the Summer of 1969 by ethnomusicologist Martin Koenig and submitted to KPFA’s World Ear Project, this tape captures a conversation between two cattle herders and a woman, in the village of Ruski Krstur in Yugoslavia (now Serbia). The three are speaking in the language of the Rusyn, a sizable ethnic minority within the Vojvodina district of Yugoslavia.

Several recordings made by Charles Amirkhanian from a backyard on Magnolia Bluff overlooking the U. S. Naval Supply Center railroad yard in Seattle, Washington, on Aug. 12, 1970. Recording from Naval Capt. John Hansen’s house at 1963 23rd Ave. W. at several points during the day (7:17 PM to 7:30 PM and 11:36 PM to 11:48 PM) with the mic in a couple of slightly different locations, Amirkhanian captures the sounds of trains squealing and seagulls crying and other ambient sounds.

An ambient recording made inside the Forest Hill MUNI Station in San Francisco between 8:00 PM and 8:15 PM on October 5, 1970 by Jeff Echeverria and Frank French for KPFA’s World Ear Project. This recording captures the subtle ambiance of a largely empty subway station with the sound of sparse footsteps and faraway traffic intermittently interrupted with the trains as they pass through.

A recording of water dripping into a cup of water No its not a form of torture, its just raw sound emanating from a Berkeley faucet. One can use it as a form of meditation or turn it into a new form of auditory art. Recorded on Dec. 7, 1972. Maybe its a tribute to the brave soldiers that died at Pearl Harbor? The volume of this stereo recording varies, allowing the listener to enjoy the full range of resonance.
