The island of Tasmania is a haven for nature, as almost half of the island is designated as national park lands. Nearly two fifths of that is considered a World Heritage Area: this area covers mountainous terrain that is home to several glacial lakes, such as Lake St. Clair in the western center of the island. Reaching a depth of 200 meters, Lake St. Clair is the deepest lake in the Southern Hemisphere...

Lying about 200 kilometers (124 miles) off the southeastern coast of Australia is the island state of Tasmania. This island has been likened to pre-industrial England because of its temperate climate and lush landscapes. The British, however, used the island for an unsentimental purpose. They settled it as a penal colony in 1803. Prior to settlement by the British, the island saw visits by the Dutch, when explorer Abel Tasman named it Van Diemans Land in 1642...

On April 26, 2006, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite passed over the island of Tasmania, south of Australia, and captured this image, which showed numerous fires (marked in red) burning. Several of the fires are accompanied by long smoke plumes, which stretch generally westward. Sensor: Aqua/MODIS.

This true-color satellite image shows a large phytoplankton bloom, several hundred square kilometers in size, in the Indian Ocean off the west coast of Tasmania. In this scene, the rich concentration of microscopic marine plants gives the water a lighter, more turquoise appearance which helps to highlight the current patterns there. Notice the eddies, or vortices in the water, that can be seen in several places...

A streak of bright color down the east coast of Tasmania marks the presence of a large algal bloom. Scientists first measured the extent of this bloom with the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer on NASA’s Aqua and Terra satellites. The above images were acquired by the Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor (SeaWiFS) on the OrbView-2 satellite on October 18, 2004. The image on the right shows high concentrations of chlorophyll, red and green, along the coast, confirming the presence ...
