Eben Moglen's keynote speech at the 2009 Nonprofit Technology Conference in San Fransico, CA. "Knowledge cannot and should not be owned. The notion that it can condemns certain segments of society to extinction...We can do everything we need to do in a way which is calculated to address the basic question of how we allow everyone to learn. The strongest tool we have for solving the problems caused by human intelligence is human intelligence." https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/09NTC_plenary:_Eben_Moglen

The Features module is mostly known for the possibility to share, distribute and re-use bundled sets of configuration. But how can it help you in the development of your next Drupal project? From the module description: "The features module enables the capture and management of features in Drupal. A feature is a collection of Drupal entities which taken together satisfy a certain use-case.". What we'll look at is how Features also helps you with team collaboration, versioning, upgrades, deployment and why you've been missing out if you're not using it yet.

Warum will man das? Weil schnell professionelle Zeichnungen entstehen. Paul-Olivier Dehaye talks about his personal journey across this technological landscape of psychological profiling based on digital traces to influence individuals and their decision making. Most political campaigns are data-driven nowadays, and many are getting into profiling of individual voters. Recently, a company with a strong background in military PSYOPS has implemented technology developed at Cambridge University, to enable psychological profiling based on digital traces. They have then been embedded into some of the most surprising recent political campaigns: Ted Cruz's, Donald Trump's and Leave.EU (Brexit). I will outline my personal journey, first discovering the technology as a test subject for Cambridge University, then investigating this company as a complete amateur, and eventually contributing to an article shared globally. A background article based on this research was published by NRK Beta early in february 2017, see .

Månedens tema er: «An introduction to Freifunk» med Andreas Bräu. Foredraget vil foregå på Enligsh. Kort om forelesningen: Starting with the history of Freifunk Andreas will give an overview on Freifunks goals and vision. It is also a history about their devices and the software they use for that. Another topic will be their social and political impact in Germany and the EU. He will also talk about how Freifunk organizes with more than 400 local communities. There will be enough time and room for questions, as well. Andreas Bräu studied computer science in the early 2000s and now works as a software developer in Berlin. Freifunk came to his life in 2006. Since then he did a lot, i.e. some firmware development, creating web sites, organizing community meetings.

The concept of an Universal, unconditional Basic Income (UBI) is getting increasing traction in many political and economic circles, this in view of the major ('disruptive') changes society in general and the 'labor market' in particular are set to experience in the (very) near future. Though in its essence absurdly simple - the name says it all - UBI forms a complex tangle of issues, and is the subject of fierce debate. Demands for UBI are an outcome of a general discontent with the present dispensation and especially the role of finance in it. UBI also narrowly connects with the rise of a new - 'and dangerous' social class-in-forming (-Guy Standing): the 'Precariat.' Some developers of cryptocurrencies, often also members of the precariat themselves (even if the upper tier of it) -- being by definition adverse to the existing forms of (fiat) money, by now the private property of 'banksters' -- view UBI as being a uniquely appropriate platform to push thru the monetary transformation they envisage, by advocating to pay it out in (their) cryptocurrency . One of these cryptocurrencies, Duniter (1,2), even makes its own existence more or less contingent upon the existence of UBI. I am not so sure this is a good idea, and this has to do with the still unresolved, and, immo, quite fundamental problems with the 'usability' of cryptocurrencies with the population at large, and the likewise largely unresolved economic issues with the concept of cryptocurrency itself in general. Since doubt expresses uncertainty and a wish to discuss, I want to format my talk, just like I did when I discussed Bitcoin at the Göteborg FSCONS in 2015, as a dialogue with the audience, and then especially with the potentially 'tech solutionist' component in it. Exploring the possibilities of a more eco friendly and optimized life https://metanook.de/2018/talk/combining-permaculture-and-hackerculture In a world where we are all connected through technology using devices we carry around with us we have redefined the meaning of community. Collectively we feel concerned about what is happening to our environment and our fellow humans and yet at the same time helpless to change the world. Many want to live more ecologically and connected to nature whilst optimzing life with the technological advancements and connections we have made. In this lecture we explore possible solutions to this problem. Different ways of living as part of a community, consuming, producing and inspiring change. The Night of Open Knowledge (Nook) in Lübeck is an open conference which provides insights into different aspects of computer science and non-technical topics to a broad audience. The MetaNook is organized by the Chaotikum e.V. located in Lübeck and the students organization MetaMeute located at the University of Lübeck. https://www.metanook.de

Was passiert dann? Künstliche Intelligenz für humanoide Roboter der Zukunft https://metanook.de/2018/talk/neural-robot-learning The challenges in autonomous driving, anthropomorphic robotics, understanding human motor control, and in brain-machine interfaces are currently converging. Modern anthropomorphic robots with their compliant actuators and various types of sensors (e.g., depth and vision cameras, tactile fingertips, full-body skin, proprioception) have reached the perceptuomotor complexity faced in human motor control and learning. While outstanding robotic and prosthetic devices exist, current algorithms for autonomous systems and robot learning methods have not yet reached the required autonomy and performance needed to enter daily life. This talk covers four major challenges in robotics. These are, (1) the decomposability of complex tasks into basic primitives organized in complex architectures, (2) the ability to learn from partial observable noisy observations of inhomogeneous high-dimensional sensor data, (3) the learning of abstract features, generalizable models and transferable policies from human demonstrations, sparse rewards and through active learning, and (4), accurate predictions of self-motions, object dynamics and of humans movements for assisting and cooperating autonomous systems. Vincent Ambo presents a short overview over software trust issues in modern Linux distributions, such as compiler bootstrapping, and hopefully leave you with a newfound sense of paranoia. Many people are familiar with the problems around the lack of trust in proprietary hardware components and their firmware. Similar issues do however exist on the software side of things, especially when it comes to how we bootstrap compilers for the ubiquitous C-language. This talk will present an overview of how these processes work in modern Linux distributions, which issues we have and what the implications are. We'll also do a brief dive into related topics, such as repeatable build environments and reproducibility. If you're not already aware of these issues, hopefully this talk will leave you with a newfound sense of paranoia and some pointers towards things that YOU can do to improve the situation.

Abstract: The Internet, increasingly affordable mobile devices, open licensing, open access journals and open educational resources provide the foundation for a world in which universal access to education is possible. Governments are supporting this shift with a move toward open policies: requiring public access to publicly funded resources. The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals provide an opportunity to think about learning as solving global grand challenges. Dr. Cable Green, Director of Open Education at Creative Commons (CC), will provide an overview of the Commons, current CC projects, and discuss specific examples where institutions and governments have moved the default on practice, culture and funding from "closed" to "open."

In this talk, we look at free software conference recordings, and the way these have evolved over the past ten years. A deeper look is also taken into how the videos are produced, how publishing is done, and what free software is used to do this. Additionally, a few different approaches to these tasks as taken by different organisations are examined.

Leon Charl du Toit introduces a Mandatory Access Control system for PostgreSQL, using Row Level Security, which makes good on the promises of the GDPR: strong conditions for collecting data only based on consent, right to access, right to be forgotten, and data portability. The recent enforcement of the GDPR has brought a renewed focus on issues of data privacy and protection, and a clear need for data storage systems designed with privacy and protection in mind. This talk introduces a Mandatory Access Control system for PostgreSQL, using Row Level Security, which makes good on the promises of the GDPR: strong conditions for collecting data only based on consent, right to access, right to be forgotten, and data portability. Designed to be used via a REST API, the system allows developers to create applications which give users true ownership of their data, and give administrators the ability to control by whom and how data is being used. Leon du Toit works at the University of Oslo's Centre for IT, where he is Group Leader for Research Services. Previously he worked as a Data Scientist at Telenor. He is interested in using technology and data to the benefit of society.

First they came for ARC. Free software replaced it. Then they came for GIF. Free software replaced it. Then they came for MP3. What on Earth did they expect Free software to do? MPEG played it a little smarter than SEA or CompuServe. Threatened lawsuits never happened; they simply hung in the air like the Sword of Damocles, poisoning the market waters. As intended, this boxed out the Free MP3 encoder projects, the people directly responsible for MP3's growing success. And the rest of the world mostly continued treating MP3 like a 'free' format and mostly didn't get sued. Mostly. But the Free codec hackers did not forget, and thus far we choose not to forgive. In this talk Monty will present recollections, technical asides, and unsubstantiable gossip in an intentionally one-sided history of the codec wars. From the early days of LAME to the dawning story of the new AV1, come hear about the tactics and maneuvers of Free codec development. Christopher (Monty) Montgomery has been professionally active in audio and compression since 1993. He founded Xiph.Org in 1994 and began the Vorbis codec in 1998, shortly after Fraunhofer IIS and Thomson Multimedia threatened legal action against FOSS MP3 encoder projects. Over time Monty and Xiph.Org have developed or contributed to other Free and Open Source codecs such as Speex, FLAC, Theora, Daala, CELT, Opus, and AV1. Monty's other software includes CDParanoia and Postfish, and he's contributed to Audacity and Cinelerra in the service of musical theater, video, and stage production. Monty holds a B.S. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science with a concentration in music from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a M.Eng. in Computer Engineering from Tokyo Institute of Technology. He is currently a research engineer at the Mozilla Corporation, where he works on digital media standards.

This talk will take you through some tools and techniques I used to reverse engineer the keyboard controller in my Thinkpad x230 laptop. I was driven to start this project when the laptops currently on sale just did not meet my requirements. Even the durable Thinkpad laptops I preferred in the past are being dumbed down. Eventually, I will need a new laptop - and with the available offerings, I just do not want anything that currently can be purchased off the shelf. To keep the project achievable, I reduced my gripes to just the keyboard - asking the question: "Can I shoehorn an older keyboard in a modern laptop?" Taking you through UEFI, ARCompact CPUs, Firmware Reversing, big structure dumping, SMM and custom virtual machines to answer that with "maybe." I hope to inspire others to address their hardware gripes too - and offer some tools and the confidence that they can. Hamish hacks hardware, software and organizes the Dim Sum Labs hackerspace in Hong Kong. He has always liked to bend hardware to his will, which led to a career as a Systems Programmer and means that he is always trying to understand what he can see inside the case. Hamish currently lives in Hong Kong - tiny living with his many tiny computers.
