CIRCULAR      )  OFFICE  CIITEF  COMMISSARY  SUBSISTENCE, 

Department  of  the  Ohio, 

Cincinnati,  Ohio,  Sept.  6,  1862. 


Officers  drawing  Subsistence  Stores  from  the  United  States,  in 
this  Department,  will  be  governed  by  the  following: 

1st.  The  meat  rations  can  be  of  either  Pork,  Bacon,  (sides  or 
shoulders,)  Salt  or  Fresh  Beef,  or  one-half  of  either  two  of  the  above 
items,  or  one-third  of  either  three,  or  one-fourth  of  the  four,  or  any 
such  division  that  the  added  total  number  of  rations  shall  equal 
the  total  number  of  rations  drawn. 

2d.  A  similar  rule  should  be  followed  in  regard  to  the  two 
items  of  Breadstuff's  ;  thus,  one-fourth  flour  can  be  drawn  and  three- 
fourths  of  Hard  Bread,  or  the  reverse,  or  half  of  each. 

3d  The  law  allows  any  two  of  the  four  items  of  Beans,  Peas, 
Rice  or  Hominy,  or  two-thirds  of  any  three.  Dessicated  Potatoes, 
or  Dessicated  Mixed  Vegetables,  can  be  substituted  for  either  Beans, 
Peas,  Rice  or  Hominy. 

4th.  Tea  or  Coffee  can  be  drawn  on  same  principle  as  in  para- 
graph two. 

5th.  Sugar,  Vinegar,  Candles,  Soap  and  Salt,  are  all  drawn 
separately,  and  for  the  full  amount  of  rations  if  desired. 

6th.  For  Potatoes  (fresh)  take  three-sevenths  of  the  total  num- 
ber of  rations  drawn,  which  will  be  the  number  of  pounds  allowed 
on  any  return.  For  Molasses  take  two-sevenths  of  the  total  number 
of  rations  drawn,  which  will  give  the  number  of  rations  allowed, 
which  divided  by  one  hundred  gives  the  number  of  gallons. 

7th.  Each  Company  of  one  hundred  men  should  obtain  for 
cooking,  from  the  Quartermaster's  Department,  two  camp  kettles, 
five  mess  pans,  two  axes  and  two  hatchets  for  every  fifteen  men. 
Also,  if  possible,  tin  cup,  spoon  and  knife  for  every  man.
