We, in an analysis of the basis of life.
Realize that there is always a beginning.
Each day is, in itself, a new start, and
each day is filled with new horizons.
Just as the wind refresh the land, new
challenges provide the refreshing part of
life. Doors perpetually in motion open to
the onrushing masses, presenting us with yet
another starting gate. Vast seas of fog cloud
the entrance to tomorrow, and we begin to find
ourselves adrift.

AFTER DARK, SCC!
Mr. Carlos Surratt does a fine job as head of our
Evening Division.
Students who could not come during the day find it
easy to come and take the courses offered For night stu-
dents. The courses range from College Parallel to the
technical and vocational courses.
One can always find time to take a course at S.C.C.
66
Takes on A New FACE!
There is truly no "generation gap" in SCC's night division.
There is, however, the same spirit of learning which has
made SCC the college that it is today.
Above: Nightstudents en-
gage in honest discussion.
Left: The night is not all
studying and learning.

SCC Wins State Crown
The 1972 version of SCC's Knight basketball team after a slow start, opened
the new gymnasium by winning a state NCCCAA championship. After dropping the
first three games, the team's freshmen began to show their style as Surry won their
next eight against tough opposition before losing to Gaston and Southeastern for the
second time. The Knights began the "second season" in the state playoffs at Kinston
against Gaston College taking a 61-60 decision. On the following night SCC rolled
over Southeastern Community College to win the state crown. The Knights advanced
to the Region X NJCAA playoffs at Ferrum (Va.) Junior College. The Knight's
season ended with a loss in a close game against Anderson (S.C.) Jr. College, as
the Anderson squad won 83-70.

Recognition
97
Yes,
We have only just begun.
But there are those among us who know the road we travel .
We follow in their footsteps.
As they go before us.
Their sacrifices have given us the knowledge to make our
Beginning.
The road behind them may have been rough —
We cannot judge;
We only know it has given them the qualities it takes to be
Outstanding in the eyes of their followers.
Such outstanding people deserve a little more
Praise than they have yet received.
Therefore,
To these people
We dedicate the following pages.
9S
"A perfect woman, nobly planned,
To warm, to comfort, and command;
And yet a spirit sti 1 1 and light
With something of angelic light."
What more can we say?
Mrs. Leona Cooke
99
Mr. George Jones
He is a man to whom the world is but a saw, a block of wood,
and a skillful hand.
He Is a man to whom we give no credit.
But, in reality, his reward is in the good he does.
He builds the builders to make our world efficient.
Yet we never see him.
See him as he is.
100
Recognition comes but in the dark-
ness of a moment. For six years
he has given. His moment is now,
a moment of inconsequence, per-
haps, but this IS his moment. Our
sincerity is matched but only in
the deep example he has set.
A friend should be one in whose
understanding and virtue we can
confide, and whose opinion we can
value at once for its justness and
sincerity.
Mr. Richard C. Seltzer
101
Miss Ruth Thompson
Though times may look bleak and bare
Though minds and hearts are in despair
There is a flower which blooms each day
To guide a student along the way
A new ray of hope rest in her smile
For it is in her the answer lies
To many a question and many a dream
102
Mr. James Wallace
He helps you
He makes you understand
He makes you happy
He is knowledgeable
He gives the extra effort
He sacrifices
He is firm but fair
He is unmistakably
Mr. Wallace

In putting the 1972 Lancer together, we found, besides the
many problems, that there were people without whose help, there
would have been nothing. To our photographers, Larry Gordon,
Dick Hill, and especially to Jerry Reid, who was responsible for
developing over 500 pictures used In this annual; To Mr. Arden
Lackey, without whose help and advice, as well as the individual
pictures, The Lancer would not have been possible; to Mr. Richard
Seltzer who helped where no other could; and to the countless people
whose cooperation and work, both in selling pictures and in advising,
helped us to bring this 1972 Lancer to you, the students of SCC.
