I he Spanish- American War was not much of a struggle as wars go. In
its biggest battle, there were fewer than 1 1,000 men, counting both sides.
Vet the memory of one outfit and its fighting colonel is still bright.

The First United States Volunteer Cavalry was recruited from the
four territories— Arizona, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Indian Terri-
tory. Its men were cowboys, miners, sheriffs, gunfighters, Mexicans and
Indians. The roster included famous names from either side of the law.
There were also such other descriptive handles as Happy Jack, Cherokee
Bill and Rattlesnake Pete,

Added to this group of leather- faced, saddle-tough Westerners was
a sprinkling of gentlemen athletes from the colleges arid clubs of New
York and Boston. Together they made up the wildest, most flamboyant
regimen! the U. S. Army has ever known — the famous Rough Riders.

They fought in the first battle of the Cuban campaign. Las Guasimas,
and again at Santiago. But it was al San Juan Hill where, rallying to
the battle cry of their colonel, they swarmed up the hill to victory and
to gh.ry — and catapulted their colonel. Theodore Roosevelt, into the
Presidency of the United States.

School begins lor the young ranch horse
when he is selected as choice material for
a good cow pony. Teaching him the ABC's
of cow training, however, is not an easy job.
First, he must be broken to a steady, gentled
saddle mount. Then comes the rigid course
which teaches him to tangle with an ornery
cow critter and come away the victor.

The crucial test of mixing with his first cow
is a decisive one for the young horse. Of
course, the cow is only an old slag steer, but
plenty belligerent, nonetheless. Cowboys
rope the steer with a good strong reata, the

other end of which is tied to a heavy loop
around the horse's neck. Being naturally shy
of cows, the horse tries to get away. The two
lunge about, fall, and often wind up in a con-
fused heap. A few days of this punishment
accustoms the pony to the clumsy cattle and
he is soon nimbly side-stepping the reata,
keeping the cow under control with a taut line.
When the horse has learned his lesson well,
he graduates with high honors, becoming a
regular cow horse. Only then does he assume
his rightful place in the workaday world of
the ranch.
