Scientific Note;

Butterflies of Batman Province (East Turkey)

(Lepidoptera)

Muhabbet Kemal Ahmet O.Ko^ak Kesran Akin

Within the field programs of the year 2008, the authors visited Kozluk District in Batman
Province (East Turkey) on 28 May, 2008, in the evening. The provincial fauna of the Lepidoptera is
extremely poorly known. Only 39 butterfly species were reported from Batman in the literature so
far (Hesselbarth et al.,1995 ^] Kogak & Kemal,20o6 2; Kogak & Kemal,2007 3). There is no record
for the moths in the province. Among the reasons, the insecurity of the remote areas cannot be
omitted. This case is still continuing.4

Due to the storm in the province, number of the specimens collected in Kozluk District is
very limited. However, 5 species are recorded as new to the Province. The captured specimens are
preserved in the Cesa collection.

In the following list, totally 44 species are given alphabetically under the related 5 families.
New faunal records to the Batman Province are marked with #.

Further faunal studies in the remote areas of the province will be carried out by the authors
in this year.

^ The remote areas of the Eastern Turkey, including Batman Province are currently extremely dangeous for the night studying, due to the terrorist

activities. Our field surveys have been carrying out under these circumstances for years. For details visit the official Web Page of the Turkish General

Among other interesting insects in the Kozluk district, Eremopeza gibbera (Stal, 1876)
(Pamphagidae), Ptyngidricerus albardanus (McLachlan,i89i) (Ascalaphidae, Planipennia), and
Epallage fatime (Charpentier,i84o) (Euphaeidae, Odonata) are noteworthy, as they are rare
species with locahzed populations.
