Diversity of the Lepidoptera in the World
(DLW)'
A project supported by the CESA©

DLW is an independent project supported by the Cesa from the year of 1998 on. The
aim of this long termed project is to prepare a comprehensive database program on especially
Old World Lepidoptera taxa for the scientific surveys of the Cesa researchers. It comprises, at
present, 60875 valid species, as well as 22417 subspecies in 8403 valid genera, subgenera or
sections, 934 family group names among the 92630 revised taxa. Original references,
synonyms, vernacular names, distributional information of 5712 localities, provinces or states
in the world; important ecological information (food-plants, habitats, phenology, generations,
etc), bibliography, etc. are also included. All the states, regions, provinces, and collecting
locatities were given as codes for the researches carried out by the Cesa. Taxonomical
evaluations of the authors are also made in the Cesa's program for the first the in the world,
using the DLW program."^ Complementarily, thousands original digital images taken in nature,
original distributional maps of the taxa are also available in the Cesa archives.

On the Early Stages of Princeps c/emo/eus (L'mnaeus, 1758) in South East Turkey
{Lepidoptera, Papilionidae)

Recently, Princeps demoleus (Linn.) was recorded in Nusaybin city (Mardin Province) very
close to the Syrian border in South East Turkey (Ko9ak, Kemal, Akdeniz,2006). The studied examples
were collected by the second author in the Nusaybin city centre and Beyazsu (North of Nusaybin city)
on the dates of 22.08.2005, 23.08.2005, 03.09.2005, and 26.09.2005 (coll. Cesa).
On 25th June 2006, authors visited Nusaybin for searching the P. demoleus in Nusaybin city
and found the butterflies flying in the gardens, and the city parks especially around the cultivated
Lemon trees (Fig.l). No migratory behaviour of the butterflies observed. Some females were observed
during egg laying on the upperside of the young leaves of Citrus trees (Figs. 2,3). The population of the
butterfly was very low, only four five specimens were observed in the city. After a while, eggs, and
newly hatched caterpillars were detected amoung the young leaves of Citrus trees (Figs. 4-6). Young
and relatively mature caterpillars could be found on the trees at the same time. Some of them were
reared by the second author in the room conditions. However, development of the caterpillars were
quicker and more healthy outside than the room conditions (Figs.7-12) According to the information of
the authors on 27th August some caterpillars were fully grown or already pupated, while others still in
earlier stages of the caterpillars on 31st August and 3rd September, 2006 (Figs. 13-16). According to the
reared specimens in room conditions, pupation of a specimen was on 2nd September (Fig. 15), emerging
8-9 September, 2006 (Figs. 16, 17).
After taking all these observations into consideration, authors came to the conclusion that the
present existence of Princeps demoleus in Nusaybin (South East Turkey) is not due to the migration at
that date. Apparently, the species is native, freely living on Citrus trees under the natural conditions,
with probably two successive generations roughly from June to October.
