The aim of this excursion was to initiate a faunistical research on the moth fauna of the
Province Bingol, and to give opportunity to our students for their further field experiences. The
selected place for camping and studying was the Military Station called "§eref ' at 1530m above sea
level, and its environment in Solhan District. In two days 25-26 July 2008 the authors visited three
places in Solhan District all day long, and around Kuruca Pass (2025m) in Bingol district by day
only. The first results were satisfactory, and our sincere thanks to the Military Officiers are due to
their kind collaboration and hospitality at the Station.

As to the lepidopterological results of the excursion, studies by day were influenced
negatively due to the drought in the area, especially in this year, and continuous overgrazing. The
only observed lycaenids on the flowers of Centaurea iberica was Lycaena (Thersamonia)
thersamon (Fig. 15), Lycaena (Thersamonia) kefersteinii (Fig. 16), and Quercusia quercus
among the leaves of the Quercus trees in the woodland (Figs. 19, 22). In the shadows,
Pseudochazara pelopea (Fig.18), Hipparchia syriaca (Figs. 1, 21), Coenonympha pamphilus
and C. saadi (Satyridae) were uncommon. The males of the second generation oiMelitaea didyma
(Fig. 17) and and M. fascelis (Argynnidae) were seen more frequently. At light trap, Marumba
quercus (Sphingidae) (Fig. 9) and Lymantria dispar (Lymantriidae) (Fig. 10) were frequently
observed. Nearly 120 species of the following 23 moth families are recorded (mostly new to Bingol
Province) during this excursion: Alucitidae, Arctiidae, Coleophoridae, Cosmopterigidae, Cossidae,
Ctenuchidae, Drepanidae, Gelechiidae, Geometridae, Lasiocampidae, Lecithoceridae,
Lbnacodidae, Lymantriidae, Noctuidae, Notodontidae, Oecophoridae, Pterophoridae, Pyralidae,
Saturniidae, Sphingidae, Tineidae, Tortricidae, and Yponomeutidae. Other insect groups were
also observed during the studies.

The faunistical results will be evaluated in separate publications.

Aphantopus hyperantus was recorded in Turkey in the year of 1862, around Bursa by J. Mann, an Austrian
lepidopterist. As this record could not be confirmed by the authors for many years, in the modern publications the
occurence of this species in Turkish territories was omitted. The new record of Aphantopus hyperantus around Derekoy
in Kirklareli Province is clearly based upon a native population; therefore it must be added to the butterfly fauna of
Turkey as the 400th species [based upon the Info-system of the Cesa: http://www.cesa-tr.org/Infos.htm ] [Notes of
Editor: A.6.K]
