Scientific Note 

Brief field notes on the Insecta observed in South and East 

Turkey in late August 2008

Before and after an academical examination in the Mersin University on 23rd August, the 
authors reahzed field trips to the vicinity of Malatya city, G61ba§i in Adiyaman Province, Sertavul 
Pass in Karaman Province, and Ziyaret Pass in Sivas Province. Some results on the observations 
and field notes on new provicial records are briefly explained below together with illustrations of 
the first author. 

The first place visited on 22nd August,20o8 is Beylerderesi (920m) in the district Ye§ilyurt 
in the Province Malatya (East Turkey). Below, list of the 14 lepidopteran species, recorded or 
captured in the morning. Two species are new to Malatya Province.

The second place visited on 22nd August,20o8 is upper Erkenek Tunnel in the district 
Dogan§ehir in the Province Malatya (East Turkey). Below, list of the 25 lepidopteran species, 
recorded or collected within an hour in the afternoon, is given alphabetically with their scientific 
and vernacular names in Turkish. Two species are new to Malatya Province.

On 24th August,20o8 Sertavul Pass on the provincial border between Mersin and Karaman 
Provinces, the tragacanthic mountain steppe at 1700m inside the Karaman Province was visited by 
the authors (Fig. 14). Below, the 15 lepidopteran species, recorded or collected in the afternoon are 
listed alphabetically. Three species are new to Karaman Province.

Finally, on 29th August 2008, the authors visited Ziyaret Pass 1900m in the Giiriin district 
of the Sivas Province. In the tragacanthic steppe, some diurnal geometrids (incl. Selidosema 
plumaria [Diurnal and new record to Karaman Province!]), and crambids were captured. They 
will be published separately. Besides, the butterflies Pieris ergane (Pieridae), Pseudochazara 
mamura birgit [only females] (Fig.20), Pseudochazara geyeri (Fig.19), Chazara 
(Neochazara) anthe (Satyridae), Muschampia proteides, and Hesperia comma (Hesperiidae) 
were still active and sipping nectar on Cirsium flowers. Among the Orthopteran species, 
CaUiptamus, Oedipoda coerulescens (Fig.21), and a very remarkable Pezodrymadusa female 
were recorded. The latter will be evaluated in a separate paper. 

Last images obtained during our present travel reflect openly the environmental problems 
in Turkey (Figs.22-26).

According to a statistical survey made in Turkey in 1999, totally 438.338 highway traffic accidents were 
caused by sleepless, tired and alcoholic driving, and as a result, 4.596 people were killed, 109.899 people 
were injured and 262 million dollar of physical damage was occured.

Abstract: This paper deals with the synonymical and distributional list of the Lepidoptera species ofMu§ 
Province (East Turkey). It is based upon the Info-system of the Cesa. It comprises totally 224 Lepidopteran 
species recorded in Mu§ Province so far.

the family Choreutidae from Turkey.
